Nightmare Plume and ‘Cozy Relationship’

Posted by feww on May 16, 2010

Wondered where all the oil spill was?

If you have been reading this blog, or listening to experts describing the daily ration of oil spewing into the Gulf as being much larger than reported by  NOAA, and jumped on by BP, you must have wondered what could have happened to the oil.

Wonder no more! Scientists have discovered  massive oil plumes in the Gulf including one measuring 10 miles by 3 miles by 300 feet thick, according to New York Times.

To put the measurement into some prospective, a plume measuring as described above would be very large, indeed, and supports our earlier estimates that the at least 25,000bpd of crude oil was gushing out of the ruptured pipe.

Meanwhile, BP admitted that its latest attempt to stop the leak, by threading a much narrower 6-in (15-cm) tube inside  a 21-inch (53-cm) riser-pipe, to funnel the oil to a vessel at the surface had failed.

A company spokesman said, they would try again.

Meanwhile, the British newspaper Guardian reported BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward  as saying that the size of the spill was “tiny” compared to how large the he Gulf of Mexico was.

Cozy Relationship Or Federal Felony

Readers would recall that President Barrack Obama declared that  the epoch of  “cozy relationship” between oil firms and US regulators was over.

“For too long, for a decade or more, there’s been a cozy relationship between the oil companies and the federal agency that permits them to drill,” Obama said.

“That cannot and will not happen anymore,” Obama added.…

What the President failed doing was to define the exact meaning of a “cozy relationship.” Was it about the oil executive and MMS officials sharing a joint together, swapping sexual partners and doing each other a few “harmless” favors, or was it about breaking the law and committing a federal felony?

Environmental group suing U.S. Govt over oil permits

The Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group, has filed a notice of intent to sue Ken Salazar the U.S. Interior Secretary, and the Interior Department’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) for failing to get the necessary environmental permits, required by two environmental laws, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Endangered Species Act, before approving offshore oil operations.

Note, the key words and phrases here are, “failing to get the necessary environmental permits,” the Endangered Species Act and “the Marine Mammal Protection Act.” and

“The Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act prohibit private entities, such as oil companies, as well as federal agencies, such as the Minerals Management Service — the branch of the Interior Department responsible for managing offshore oil activities — from killing, harming, or harassing marine mammals, unless they have received authorizations and take measures to minimize the impacts of their activities. The Endangered Species Act protects species such as the sperm whale, which is listed as endangered, while the Marine Mammal Protection Act applies to all marine mammals, such as the bottlenose dolphin and the Florida manatee.” The group said in their notice.

Ongoing Risk of Deepwater Drilling

The fact remains however that there are at least 77 drilling rigs and commercially producing oil platforms operating in deep waters of Gulf of Mexico, and many more are slated to go on line.

Also, Fire-Earth Moderators forecast the probability of another major oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico between now and December 2011 at greater than 90 percent. SEE: http://feww.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/fire-earth-forecasts-10-major-oil-spills-to-end-2011/

Airliner Fatalities: Boeing vs. Airbus  (2009 – 2010)

Fire-Earth has been trying to warn the blog readers against flying for the last two years. The moderators have also pointed out that the safety record of Airbus is worse than that of Boeing aircraft.

Below is  a summary of airliner crashes (Boeing and Airbus) which resulted in fatalities over the last 18 months:

  • February 25, 2009. Turkish Airlines Flight 1951, a Boeing 737-800 flying from Atatürk Airport in Istanbul to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam crashed during final approach. Of the 134 people on board, 9 were killed and 85 injured.
  • June 1, 2009. Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330-200 flying from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Paris, France, crashed in the Atlantic Ocean killing all 228 people onboard.
  • June 30, 2009. Yemenia Flight 626, an Airbus A310-300 flying from Sana’a, Yemen to Moroni, Comoros, crashed in the Indian Ocean killing 152 onboard; a young boy survived.
  • January 25, 2010. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409, a Boeing 737-800, crashed in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after take-off from Beirut Airport heading to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All 90 people on-board were killed. [NOTE; Fire Earth believes the flight was shot down by Israeli military. However, the stats are included in the calculations.]
  • May 12, 2010. Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771, an Airbus A330, crashed on landing at Tripoli International Airport, killing 103 onboard; the sole survivor is 9-year-old child from the Netherlands who lost his parents and elder brother.

Approximate No. of Aircraft Currently Operational

Airbus: 5,558  [http://www.airbus.com/en/corporate/orders_and_deliveries/]
Boeing 10,837 [http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm]

Number of Airliner Crashes Resulting in Fatalities (January 2009  to present)

  • Boeing: 2
  • Airbus: 3

[NOTE: About twice as many Boeing commercial aircraft are thought to be operational.]

Percentage of Fatalities  (overall average)

Boeing: 53.4 %
Airbus: 99.5 %

Other Airbus Crash Stats

On January 16, 2009 the Moderators warned: “If you really have to fly because your life depends on it [sic,] and if you are flying an Airbus, then fly on odd days of the month because the Airbus is statistically twice more likely to crash on even days!”

Eyjafjallajökull Eruption Gradually Intensifying

Posted by feww on May 16, 2010

Eruption Turning Darker, Plume Height Increasing

According to the latest assessment released by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO), the volcanic plume from Eyjafjallajökull is gray, occasionally reaching a height of 8km (27,000 feet) a.s.l. and drifting in a southerly direction.

IMO reported ashfall south of Eyjafjallajökull glacier and ash drift moving to southeast of the volcano.

Snapshot of earthquake activity at Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Click image to update. Source: IMO.  Photos, charts, maps and all other images issued by the European governments may be subject to copyright. See FEWW Fair USE Notice.

A swarm of at least 30 volcanic earthquakes occurred beneath Eyjafjallajökull in a 3-hour period starting  at 23:54 (UTC) striking at a depth of about 20km, with the average magnitude of less than 2.0Mw. The swarm was followed  by more sporadic tremors in the morning.

“No major changes are seen in the activity, the ash cloud is slightly higher than yesterday. Presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end.” IMO said.  For additional details, see status report.

British Airspace Closure

British airspace may have to close partially from Sunday at least until Tuesday to avoid the risk of volcanic ash from Eyjafjallajökull eruption which is drifting south from Iceland, the UK Department for Transport said.

The closure may include Heathrow airport, Europe’s busiest, the authorities said.

“Due to continuing volcanic activity in Iceland and prevailing weather conditions, there is — if the volcano continues to erupt at current levels — a risk of UK airspace closures,” the government said.

Monsoon Season Strikes Sri Lanka

Posted by feww on May 15, 2010

3 days of torrential rain, strong winds and lightening herald start of  monsoon season in SW Sri Lanka

The storms have claimed at least one life and injured many others, affecting about 20,000 people throughout the country.

Sri Lanka is struck by two monsoons each year: The southwest monsoon season, which has just started lasts until September, while the northeast monsoon normally starts in October lasting through January, a report said.

“Officials at the landslide unit of the National Building Research Organization urged residents in certain parts of Colombo to be on guard about possible landslides. Although landslides are more common in the mountainous regions of Sri Lanka than in areas around Colombo, officials said poorly-built structures, particularly at higher elevations, could become dangerous during heavy rain.”

Gulf Oil Disaster Like Apollo 13 Explosion: BP CEO

Posted by feww on May 15, 2010

BP CEO Speaks Again!

‘Significant Changes’ Needed in Deepwater Drilling

“I don’t believe it should [result in a ban], in the same way as Apollo 13 did not stop the space program nor have serious airline accidents from time to time stopped people flying.” Mr Hayward told BBC.

Oil debris are seen attached to oyster shells on Raccoon Island shoreline, Louisiana, May 12, 2010.  U.S. Navy photo

What Mr Howard didn’t say was that the explosion aboard Apollo 13 was a minor explosion, which was in no way comparable to the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

He now concedes  that deep water drilling is a very risky business, however.

“I think undoubtedly that this will be a transforming event for exploration and production activities in the deep water of the world, in particular the deep water of the United States,” he said.

Cozy Relationship

Meanwhile President Barrack Obama has declared that  the epoch of  “cozy relationship” between oil firms and US regulators is over.

“For too long, for a decade or more, there’s been a cozy relationship between the oil companies and the federal agency that permits them to drill,” Obama said.

“That cannot and will not happen anymore,” Obama added.

Well now. Let’s see. If what he says is true, that just leaves only a few more dozens of “cozy relationships” with the regulators/lawmakers: The banking and finance industry, auto  industry, pharmaceuticals, nuke power, military-industrial, airlines …

Since Salazar took office in 2009, his office has approved at least 3 lease sales, more than a total of 400 seismic surveys and drilling operations without applying for the necessary environmental permits designed to protect endangered marine species, the group says.

“The Department of the Interior and the Minerals Management Service are creating a lawless zone in the Gulf of Mexico when it comes to these environmental laws. The oil companies really get to call the shots.” Miyoko Sakashita, the center’s oceans director told reporters.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Disaster – Oil Leak Estimate

Posted by feww on May 15, 2010

How Much Oil is Leaking?

The short answer: LOTS!

Gulf of Mexico Oil Disaster. A freeze frame of the oil leak video supplied by the BP showing only one of at least two separate oil leaks.
Image may be subject to copyright.

As to whether the leak is closer to 5,000 barrels per day (bpd) or 25,000 bpd, here’s an estimate we prepared earlier:

  • Diameter of the ruptured pipe seen gushing oil on BP video: 53cm (21 inches)
  • Cross-sectional area of the pipe: 2,233cm²
  • Fire-Earth estimate of oil and gas flow:  50cm/sec [Simplified model of crude leak calculates the flow rate as the height of a cylinder filled every second.]
  • Volume of crude oil and natural gases released: 111,672cm³s-1
  • Number of seconds in each day: 86, 400 sec
  • Crude oil escaping from the pipe as a percentage of all materials: 90 percent [Fire-Earth estimate]
  • Volume of oil escaping into GOM: 8 million liters per day (rounded down to nearest million)
    • Amount of oil escaped: 2 million U.S. Gallons per day (rounded down to nearest million), or 50,000bpd
    • Escaped oil calculated at a generous margin of error of 50 percent:  25,000bpd

NOTES:

1. According to earlier reports  at least two separate leaks remain on seafloor the second of which is not shown on the BP video.
2. A reader who claimed to be an oil industry insider contacted one of the blog Moderators saying diameter of the drill pipe that enters top of the well is 6 inches (15cm). That means the oil flows nearly 4 times faster in the drill pipe than it does in the 21-inch riser-pipe.  It does NOT affect Fire-Earth estimate significantly.

Next Major Oil Disaster?

Probability of another major disaster occurring in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico between now and December 2011 : >90 percent [Fire-Earth Forecast]

Eyjafjallajökull Eruption – MISR Satellite Image

Posted by feww on May 15, 2010

Images of the 2nd Round of Eruption at Eyjafjallajökull Volcano

Eyjafjallajökull Volcano produced its second major ash plume of 2010 on May 7.  The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite collected data on ash height when it passed just east of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano mid-morning on May 7.

MISR has nine different cameras, each viewing the scene below from a difference angle nearly simultaneously. By combining all these images using a hyper-stereo technique, scientists can calculate the height of the ash plume.

The above image is a natural-color, nadir (downwards-looking) view of the scene. The top image is the stereo-derived plume height. Each pixel in the image shows an area 1.1 kilometers (0.68 miles) wide. The vertical accuracy is about 0.5km.

Much of the plume resides between 4 and 6 kilometers above the ocean surface (orange and red color in the right image), but the ash descends to near 3 kilometers yellow-green) far downwind.  Images and caption: NASA/MISR [edited for brevity.]

Status Report – 15 May 2010 (3:55UTC)

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reported plume reaching a height of about 7 km (24,000 ft) drifting in a  southwesterly direction. Ashfall was detected in the capital Reykjavík.

At least  50 lightning strikes were recorded during the previous 24 hours. No major changes in the activity were reported. There’s no sign the eruption could end anytime soon.

For details of status report by IMO and others click here.

LATEST NEWS FROM ICELAND:

Volcanic ash from Eyjafjallajokull eruption has forced the authorities to shut down the intentional airport at Reykjavík, the country’s main airport, authorities say.

UK Airspace

Parts of the UK’s airspace may close on Sunday as volcanic ash clouds continue to drift south of Iceland, the UK Department for Transport said, BBC reported.

Last week, about a dozen airports in southern Europe were forced to close and many flights were re-routed to avoid the risk from the Icelandic ash clouds.

Google Victims

Posted by feww on May 14, 2010

Google has too much blood on its hands

Google employees will be haunted by the many victims

Here we stand at the dawn of the second decade of 21st century—a time where we can reach each other, half way across the world, at near speed of light.

Yet when we try to warn our fellow humans against impending dangers, be it natural or  human-made disasters, all of our efforts are heavily filtered, blocked or buried by Google, Inc.

Had Google permitted hundreds of its censorship victims view the potentially vital information posted on this and other blogs, warning consumers, air travelers and holidaymakers against potentially deadly products, activities and places, at least some of the following people may have still been alive today.

The deaths are directly attributable to the victims’ inability to make an informed decision because Google prevented vital information from reaching them:

In the past two years, hundreds of tourists have been killed and a thousand or so others have been injured, most of them seriously, and many have been raped in New Zealand because they were unable to make an informed decision about traveling to that country.

Detailed information posted on the dangers of visiting New Zealand was heavily filtered and suppressed by Google.

How much longer are  WE THE PEOPLE going to tolerate Google censorship and suppression of vital safety information?

The time has come to demand from the lawmakers to break up Google into tiny, much less harmful pieces.

Google Censorship is a Major Threat to Our Personal Safety!]

Flooding in Midwest Kills 1, Swamps Roads, Rail Line

Posted by feww on May 14, 2010

Flooding wreaks havoc in the towns along the Missouri River

Flooding in the U.S. Midwest has killed at least one person, closed roads, inundated farmland and forced an Amtrak train to be diverted, a report said.

NWS Weather Warning Map. Click image to enter portal.

National Weather Service (NWS) says it could get worse.

Several towns along the Missouri River should expect moderate to major flooding by early next week, which would close roads and soak crops, NWS hydrologist Mark Fuchs  said.

“We’re looking basically at the highest flooding the Missouri has seen this year, and it may be the highest we’ve seen in quite a while,” Fuchs said.

Thunderstorms are expected to persist through Sunday.

“We’re pretty wet right now, so if we did get a big event in the next week or so we could have some pretty significant flooding,” Fuchs said.

“It has already been a wet week across the plains. Parts of Iowa received more than 5 inches of rain Wednesday night and Thursday morning. A day earlier, the St. Louis region was hit with thunderstorms that brought up to 3 inches of rain.” AP reported.

“As a result, rivers and creeks have risen sharply — too much in many places. Flash floods closed dozens of roads and smaller highways. Flash flood warnings were in effect throughout parts of Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.”

Jody Jones of Rutledge, 32, drowned while struggling to get out of his car on Wednesday as it was being swept away by a flash flood, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported. More…

Democratic Republic of Congo on Fire

Slash-and-burn fires in Democratic Republic of Congo

MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on May 13, 2010, after detecting  hundreds of fires (red dots) in southern Democratic Republic of Congo and northeastern Angola.  More than half of the GDP  of Democratic Republic of Congo comes from the agriculture sector, and fire is a pivotal part of agriculture across most of Africa. People burn crop residue to clear fields after harvest, and they burn forest and other natural vegetation to clear new land for farming. Image and Caption NASA/EO. Massive Landslide Transforms Westman Islands

Posted by feww on May 13, 2010

Large chunks of rocks and earth fall off the uninhabited island of  Bjarnarey,  Westman Islands archipelago

A fisherman who witnessed the catastrophe said large columns of water rose into the air as a 50-meter wide chunk of a 120-meter high cliff broke off and collapsed into the ocean below, Icelandic Review reported.

“A large chunk of the island’s vegetation disappeared in the landslide. Where the waves used to crash against a cliff there is now a rocky scree, which extends 100 meters out from the cliff. The largest boulders are believed to weigh as much as 50 tons.”

Gas Platform Sinks Offshore Venezuela

Posted by feww on May 13, 2010

Gas platform sinks in the Caribbean Sea off  Venezuelan coast, all 95 workers onboard evacuated safely

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has reportedly announced news of the sinking via the Internet.

The rig’s owners, Aban Offshore Ltd, an Indian-registered company  said  the platform had been listing, but were unsure as to the cause of sinking, BBC reported.

“The  firm’s CEO, Gopal Dupalkrishnan, told the BBC from his offices in Singapore that the sem-isubmersible drilling rig had been under contract to a company owned by the Venezuelan government.”

The rig was said to be drilling 16 gas wells in the Mariscal Sucre offshore natural gas project, located to the north-east of Sucre state.

Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA, was responsible for developing the Mariscal Sucre project, Reuters reported.

President Chavez message via Twitter read:

“I’m afraid to inform you that gas platform Aban Pearl sank a few moments ago. The good news is that 95 workers are safe.”

“They were evacuated and at the moment two Navy patrols are moving to the area.” He wrote.

“Later, Venezuela’s Energy and Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the Dragon 6 natural gas field being drilled by the Aban Pearl had been stabilized and there was no risk of leaks.” BBC said.

The incident comes just hours after Fire-Earth posted the following:
