20 Million Tons of Dust in the Air

Minimum dust content in the atmosphere higher than 20 million tons: FIRE-EARTH

Thanks (!) to human induced climate change, exacerbating droughts, dust storms and a few other natural mechanism, as well as deforestation and increased agricultural damage …, the atmosphere contained a minimum of about 20 million tons of dust during the past 12 months, FIRE-EARTH estimates.

[NOTE: The estimate does not include particles from smoke and burning fossil fuels, or ash and other volcanic materials.]

Dust covers the Gulf of Alaska, again

Dust blows off the coast of Alaska covering the Gulf of Alaska for the second time in as many weeks. “Although dust storms often arise from sand seas, such as those of the Sahara or the Arabian Peninsula, dust can also result from the interactions of glaciers and bedrock.” The natural-color image was acquired by MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite on December 1, 2010. Arctic Weather Kills Dozens Across Europe

Extreme weather conditions, snow and subzero temperatures cause chaos across Europe for the 4th day

Temperatures dropped to -34ºC (-29.2ºF) in Poland, where at least 18 people died from exposure.

About three dozen others have so far died from the cold in Central, Northern and Western Europe.

Icy roads caused at least 2,000 accidents in Germany killing at least 5 people. Belgium reported 650km (400 miles) of tailbacks on its highways.

Up to 10,000 schools across the UK have been closed, as severe snow warnings were issued for many parts of the country.

About 30cm (12in) of snow was recorded around Britain’s second largest airport, Gatwick, forcing the authorities to close it down.

At least a dozen other airports across the continent were forced to shut down.

“Switzerland suffered its coldest November night for 45 years as temperatures plunged below minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit), according to national weather service Meteosuisse.” AFP said.

Temperatures in Moscow fell to minus 24ºC (-10.5ºF), the chilliest the city has experienced in 80 years, Russia’s  Itar-Tass news agency reported. At least a dozen people have died from exposure in recent days.

Freezing conditions are expected to last for about a week, possibly longer, as a low-pressure front over western Europe inches eastward.

Venezuela Declares State of Emergency

Posted by feww on December 1, 2010

Extreme weather kills at least 30 people and forces thousands from their homes

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez declares a state of emergency in the states of Falcon, Miranda and Vargas

Flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains has claimed at least 30 lives, reports say.

So far, more than 3,000 families have lost their homes, and another 60,000 people have been affected by the deadly floods.

“Officials said the storms caused a power outage Monday that stopped operations at the Cardon oil refinery in Falcon, and similar problems shut down some units at the adjacent Amuay refinery.” AP reported.
