Data acquired by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the Japanese Meteorological Agency, and their British equivalent confirm an identical warming trend despite minor discrepancies.

Both NASA and NOAA have declared 2010 tied with 2005 as the warmest year in their 131-year instrumental record.

2010 Tied For Warmest Year on Record: NOAA

Posted by feww on January 13, 2011

2010 joint warmest and  wettest year on record

Last year tied with 2005 as the warmest year on record for global surface temperature

  • The 2010 global land surface temperature were 0.96ºC (1.73º F) above the 20th century average.
  • Global ocean surface temperatures in 2010 tied with 2005 as the third warmest at 0.49ºC (0.88ºF ) above the 20th century average.
  • 2010 was also the wettest year on record, compared to global average precipitation.

Highlights from NASA Climate Section:

  • September Arctic sea ice is now declining at a rate of 11.5 percent per decade, relative to the 1979 to 2000 average. The September 2010 extent was the third lowest in the satellite record.
  • As of December 10, 2010, the CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere were 391 ppm.
  • Data from NASA’s Grace satellite show that the land ice sheets in both Anarctica and Greenland are losing mass. The continent of Antarctica (left chart) has been losing more than 100 cubic kilometers (24 cubic miles) of ice per year since 2002.
  • Sea levels have risen by 53mm since 1993, and by 100 to 200mm since the past century. Sea rise is caused by the thermal expansion of sea water due to climate warming and widespread melting of land ice.

“2010 tied with 2005 as the warmest year of the global surface temperature record, beginning in 1880. This was the 34th consecutive year with global temperatures above the 20th century average. For the contiguous United States alone, the 2010 average annual temperature was above normal, resulting in the 23rd warmest year on record,” NOAA researchers say.

The following is mirrored from NOAA website:

2010 Global Climate Highlights

Global surface temperature anomalies for 2010. Click image to enlarge.

  • Combined global land and ocean annual surface temperatures for 2010 tied with 2005 as the warmest such period on record at 1.12 F (0.62 C) above the 20th century average. The range of confidence (to the 95 percent level) associated with the combined surface temperature is +/- 0.13 F (+/- 0.07 C).*
  • The global land surface temperatures for 2010 were tied for the second warmest on record at 1.73 F (0.96 C) above the 20th century average. The range of confidence associated with the land surface temperature is +/- 0.20 F (+/- 0.11 C).
  • Global ocean surface temperatures for 2010 tied with 2005 as the third warmest on record, at 0.88 F (0.49 C) above the 20th century average. The range of confidence associated with the ocean surface temperature is +/- 0.11 F (+/- 0.06 C).
  • In 2010 there was a dramatic shift in the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which influences global temperature and precipitation patterns — when a moderate-to-strong El Niño transitioned to La Niña conditions by July. At the end of November, La Niña was moderate-to-strong.
  • According to the Global Historical Climatology Network, 2010 was the wettest year on record, in terms of global average precipitation. As with any year, precipitation patterns were highly variable from region to region.
  • The 2010 Pacific hurricane season had seven named storms and three hurricanes, the fewest on record since the mid-1960s when scientists started using satellite observations. By contrast, the Atlantic season was extremely active, with 19 named storms and 12 hurricanes. The year tied for third- and second-most storms and hurricanes on record, respectively.
  • The Arctic sea ice extent had a record long growing season, with the annual maximum occurring at the latest date, March 31, since records began in 1979. Despite the shorter-than-normal melting season, the Arctic still reached its third smallest annual sea ice minimum on record behind 2007 and 2008. The Antarctic sea ice extent reached its eighth smallest annual maximum extent in March, while in September, the Antarctic sea ice rapidly expanded to its third largest extent on record.
  • A negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) in January and February helped usher in very cold Arctic air to much of the Northern Hemisphere. Record cold and major snowstorms with heavy accumulations occurred across much of eastern North America, Europe and Asia. The February AO index reached -4.266, the largest negative anomaly since records began in 1950.
  • From mid-June to mid-August, an unusually strong jet stream shifted northward of western Russia while plunging southward into Pakistan. The jet stream remained locked in place for weeks, bringing an unprecedented two-month heat wave to Russia and contributing to devastating floods in Pakistan at the end of July.

Queensland’s Premier Anna Bligh said: “This is still a very dangerous situation and we have thousands of people who are waking this morning to the total devastation of either their homes, businesses – for some people it’s both.

“We should be very mindful that Mother Nature has done shocking and devastating damage. People are living, at the moment, in what I would call a post-war zone.”

“Post-War Zone”

Brisbane residents awoke to the “post-war zone” this morning with entire suburbs submerged under water.  “The worst flood in 50 years” has caused widespread destruction to the infrastructure throughout the area, a report said.

“It’s a very mixed story here today, there is some relief and I’m grateful Mother Nature hasn’t been as terrible as she could have been, but people are waking up to unbearable agony across our city today,” Blight told reporters.

“We’ve seen scenes of unbelievable devastation and destruction: entire suburbs where only rooftops can be glimpsed, whole big workplaces are completely under water.”

“Whole industrial parks (and) railway stations under water, bridges, roads all closed. What I’m seeing looks more like a war zone in some places,” she said.

Bligh described the scale of damage as massive requiring “post-war” rebuilding effort.

Floodwaters Kill Two

Two Seven Brisbane area deaths have raised this week’s toll in SE Queensland to 15 19, a total of 25 29 reported deaths in Qld since December.

“Early reports indicated the man walked around road closed signs into property that is believed to be his father’s property to check that property,” Premier Blight said.

“Unfortunately as he walked he was sucked into a stormwater drain.”

A second death has since been reported.

QLD Floods: Brisbane Under Seige

Posted by feww on January 12, 2011

NEW VISITORS WHO HAVEN’T ALREADY READ THE FIRST WAVE OF COLLAPSING CITIES OUGHT TO DO SO NOW!

Humans continued to devour energy at a rate of 17.3terrawatt in 2011, when maximum ‘safe’ limit was less than 1.9terrawatt. Australia? She was the world’s largest exporter of coal …

The Worst Is Yet to Come: FIRE-EARTH

Australian cities under siege as flood crisis worsens

Up to 50,000 properties in Brisbane are to be affected by floods as Brisbane River rises to expected peak of 4.5m Wednesday and 5.5m Thursday

Up to 2,000 people have already been evacuated from Brisbane homes and the figure is rising, local reports say.

Floodwaters are expected to submerge at least 50 Brisbane suburbs as the Brisbane River rises to 4.5m this afternoon before surging to a forecast peak of 5.5m by Thursday.

FIRE-EARTH believes the peak could potentially top 7m.

Brisbane residents are told to brace themselves for the worst flooding in 150 years.

New flood modeling shows that 19,700 homes and 3,500 businesses in 2,100 streets could be inundated in Brisbane.

Up to 50,000 buildings could be affected by flooding by Thursday.

Dead Or Missing

The number of people killed by QLD’s Toowoomba area flash floods in the past 48 hours has climbed to 10, with more than 90 people still unaccounted for, the Queensland premier Ms Bligh said.

“It’s very sad overnight, we’ve seen even further notifications of missing people,” she told reporters.

“The police now are searching for more than 90 people. These are people who their families can no longer contact or find them.”

The total of reported flood-related deaths in Queensland since December 2010 currently stands at 20.

8 dead 72 missing as ‘inland tsunami’ hits Qld

Posted by feww on January 11, 2011

UPDATE: 10 Killed, 78 Missing

An ‘inland tsunami’ kills at least 8 and leaves 72 missing in Grantham, near Toowoomba, Queensland

The deadly flash flood which triggered a 9m high wall of water surging through Grantham, a town west of the city of Toowoomba in Queensland, has been likened to an instant ‘inland tsunami’ by the local Police chief, Bob Atkinson.

Mayor Peter Taylor who who thought his city was safe, Toowoomba is 700 meters above sea level,  said:

“Torrential rain over a very short period of time came down two major creeks through the middle of the city which are normal quiet drainage ways and people had no warning at all.”

[Clearly, common sense does not operate under wet conditions in Australia. Moderator]

“It was just unprecedented. Some people are saying an inland tsunami, and I think that probably sums it up really.”

Floodwaters Surge Toward Brisbane

Meanwhile, residents in low-lying areas of Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city, have been urged by the authorities to evacuate their homes, as the biggest floods in at least 3 decades approaches.

The immediate areas threatened by the flood include about 9,000 homes and businesses.

‘Darkest hour’

“This has been a night of extraordinary events,” Queensland State Premier Anna Bligh told a news conference.

She called called the flash floods in Toowoomba Queensland’s “darkest hour” since the flood crisis began in December.

“The event that started in Toowoomba can only be described as a complete freak of nature, an extraordinary deluge that almost came out of nowhere,” she said .

“What we have here in Queensland tonight is a very grim and desperate situation.”

The Dead and Missing

As the floodwaters claim their 1oth victim (total of 20 dead since December) Ms Bligh says the number of missing people has been revised up to 78.

“Clearly as we get more information from families who are looking for their loved ones these numbers are going to fluctuate, but we now have 78 people unaccounted for,” she said.

“We have 10 deaths and we have at least 18 people for who we have very grave concerns for their safety.”

Finally what FIRE-EARTH has long been warning about:

Queensland: A Mega Disaster Zone

Ms Bligh said a disaster zone may be declared over a “significant region” of Queensland.

“We are just looking for an appropriate northern line and everything south of that would be declared [a Mega Disaster Zone,]” she said.

Global Climate Extremes INTENSIFYING

Posted by feww on January 10, 2011

2011 Could Shatter 2010 Records

The wettest, coldest, driest, hottest, severest… could get even worse this year

Extremes of temperature, precipitation, drought and other climatic and weather events would continue to intensify throughout 2011, FIRE-EARTH forecasts.

  • Drought and deluge,  extremes of temperature and precipitation, wild climatic and severe weather events will raise both the frequency and intensity of human-enhanced natural disasters, decimating crops and farm animals globally, affecting food production and prices, and increasing the number of climate refugees.
  • Poverty and rocketing food prices could trigger local and cross-border conflicts , escalate into national crisis and precipitate into regional and wider-scale wars.
  • Back-to-back disasters could hit the Americas, Afro-Eurasia, Australia

Queensland Flood Update – 10 January

Posted by feww on January 10, 2011

Flash floods hit Brisbane Australia’s 3rd largest city

Summary of latest events:

  • At least two people have been killed and seven others are missing after a flash flood swept through the city of Toowoomba, west of Brisbane.
  • Floods have swamped the town of Dalby again, the town is evacuated.
  • Town of Gympie is inundated
  • The towns of Kilcoy and Toogoolawah in the Brisbane Valley have been cut off by floodwaters
  • Heavy rains reported in south-east Queensland and Darling Downs
  • Forecasters say heavy rains will continue to ravage the flooded areas for the next 48 to 72 hours
  • Several flooded towns “remain under siege from rain”
  • More flooding to hit northern NSW

TOP PRIORITY
FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR LOCKYER CREEK

Issued at 8:37 PM on Monday the 10th of January 2011 by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane.

Very heavy rainfalls have been recorded in the Toowoomba, Crows Nest and Gatton area and have caused extreme rises in the upper Lockyer Creek between Helidon and Gatton with the peak currently arriving in the Glenore Grove area.

Record flood levels of 18.92 metres were recorded at Gatton this evening before the station failed. This level is well above the previous record peak of 16.33 metres from the February 1893 flood.

Very fast and dangerous rises are occurring downstream of Gatton to Glenore Grove and will extend downstream to Lyons Bridge and O’Reilly Weir during Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Contact the SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance if required.

Without Warning?

Toowoomba’s mayor said the scale of the floods was “unbelievable” and that it had left the city in shock.

‘It’s a real disaster scene where I’m standing at the moment in Russell Street, Toowoomba. There’s furniture and furnishings and it’s just blown shops away.”Mayor Peter Taylor said

”We have a railway line about 60 or 70m (230ft) suspended in mid-air and two cars that are virtually unrecognizable that have floated and smashed into the rail.”

Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said police had received numerous calls from people needing to be rescued, a report said.

“We’ve had multiple calls requesting urgent assistance from people caught in vehicles, caught on the street, caught in flood ways,” he said.

“It is an evolving and obviously quite desperate situation for them,” he said. “There has been no warning of this event.”

NO Warning? For crying out loud!

Here’s a warning to all Deputy Police Commissioners in Australia:

EXPECT BACK-TO-BACK DISASTERS IN AUSTRALIA UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!

[DOES the lack of warning refer to flagrant wrongdoings by the state or federal government, which Deputy Police Commissioner Stewart is reticent about?]

The Rain’s Impact Unpredictable

“The ground is so waterlogged, the catchments so primed, the rivers so full, the creeks are all flooding, and it will mean something more dramatic than it has in the past,” Emergency chief Warren Bridson said.

“That 200 millimetres (eight inches) of rain… could mean the difference between a minor flood and a major flood.”

The rain’s impact is totally unpredictable, he added.

  • Pine Creek (south of Bundaberg)
  • Gympie, where electricity is cut off as a precaution

Heavy rain and flash floods also reported around Maleny, a small town about 90km (56 miles) north of Brisbane.

The Mary River is forecast to reach a high of about 17m overnight, a report said.

It takes very little rain much more rain to tip the balance, Emergency Management Queensland said.

“This year with all of the catchments primed and the river’s already flooding, that 200mm of rain… could mean the difference between a minor flood and a major flood.”

‘Mystery Spill’ off Barataria Bay, GOM

Posted by feww on January 8, 2011

WHAT’S BREWIN’?

Mystery spill-GOMEX off Barataria Bay

Gulf of Mexico 25 miles south of Barataria Bay 2011-Jan-06

On January 6th NESDIS provided NOAA Emergency Response Division with a satelitte analysis showing an anomaly consistent with an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico located at 28deg 54′ 28″N, 89deg 49′ 23″W, or about 25 miles SSE of Barataria Bay, LA. A report from BOEMRE confirms that an oil slick has been reported at that location, so confidence is high. USCG Sector NOLA/Morgan City have been provided this information, weather, and an initial trajectory analysis. The initial trajectory indicates that winds and currents should keep the oil offshore so that it is not expected to be a threat to land at least throught the coming weekend. For additional information, contact Jim Jeasonne at jim.jeansonne@noaa.gov or 206-276-5308.

Incident Details
Spill, potential spill, or other: Oil Spill
Cause of incident: Mystery Spill
Products of concern: Unknown

Latitude (approximate): 28° 54.47′ North
Longitude (approximate): 89° 49.39′ West

Queensland floodwaters move south of the state border affecting the village of Goodooga in New South Wales, Australia, in early January 2011.  The two false-color images were taken by MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite before and after the flood waters crossed the state border. The top image was captured on January 6, 2011, and the bottom on December 12, 2010“Both images use a combination of infrared and visible light to increase the contrast between water and land. Water ranges in color from light blue to navy. Clouds appear light blue-green and cast shadows onto the land surface below. Vegetation is bright green. Bare ground appears in shades of pink-brown. The rectangular areas of fluorescent green and light blue south of the river belong to an irrigation station.” Source: NASA-EO.

Real Terrorism!

Posted by feww on January 7, 2011

Main Difference Between Real Terrorism and Officially-Concocted Stories is the Number of Potential Victims

Up to 5,000 German farms have been closed after large quantities of dioxin- contaminated animal feed were discovered.

Facts:

  • Up to 5,000 German farms have been closed.
  • The full extent of the dioxin contamination has not been revealed.
  • About 150,000 potentially contaminated eggs were exported to the Netherlands for reprocessing.
  • At least 1,000 chicken farms across Germany are banned from selling eggs and poultry.
  • Up to 10,000 chickens have already been culled.
  • A reported 55 tons of suspect feed has already been fed to chickens.
  • A total of about 530 tons of feed may be contaminated.
  • Dioxin is highly toxic, and even in minute quantities can cause cancer in humans.
  • Most Dioxin chemicals are persistent in the environment and accumulate in humans and animals. They affect the nervous, reproductive and immune systems.
  • The contamination is more widespread than originally thought

German authorities have reveled that about 3,000 tons of animal feed contaminated with dioxin, a highly toxic carcinogen, was sent to poultry and hog farms across the country. Eggs from some of the farms were then exported to the Netherlands for processing, and have since entered Britain in various food products destined for human consumption, a report quoted the EU executive as saying.

“These eggs were mixed with other non-contaminated eggs to make pasteurised liquid egg. This pasteurised liquid egg has been distributed to the UK,” according to the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Dioxin levels ’far exceeded’ limits

“Authorities in the eastern states of Brandenburg and Saxony Anhalt said that at least 55 tons of suspect feed out of a total of 527 tons had already been fed to chickens and that more than 100,000 contaminated eggs had gone to market.” Said another report.

The dioxin-contaminated animal feed was sold by Harles & Jentzsch, a German feed manufacturer in Schleswig-Holstein, which in turn received toxic products from a dealer in the Netherlands.

Harles & Jentzsch told Deutsche Welle that “for years it had been mixing waste from biodiesel production into animal feed.”

The company said they had “assumed that the fatty acid waste from palm, soy and rapeseed oil used to make biofuels and supplied by the Dutch company was suitable for animal feed.”

“The German biodiesel company, Petrotec, which supplied the fatty acids to the Dutch feed dealer, said its products were for industrial lubricants only and not intended for animal feed.”
