Dangerous air pollution lingers in Beijing, as landslide kills 46 in SW China

Air quality indexes in Beijing were approaching 500 on Saturday, as monitoring stations in various parts of the Chinese capital warned the density of PM2.5 particulates had reached 700 micrograms per cubic meter.

An hour earlier, monitors at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing had recorded an off-the-chart air-quality reading of 728 and PM2.5 density of 845 micrograms per cubic meter, reports said.

  • The air quality is regarded as ‘safe’ when the index is at 50 or lower, but hazardous for indexes between 301 and 500, when outdoor physical activities should be avoided.
  • Beijing city government issued new rules last year under which all outdoor sports activities must cease and factories have to reduce production capacity when air-quality index exceeds 500.
  • “Several other cities, including Tianjin on the coast east of Beijing and southern China’s Wuhan city, also reported severe pollution over the last several days.” AP reported.
  • The authorities have blamed the the high concentration of air pollutants on dense fog and lack of wind.

‘National Tragedy’ Devastates Guatemala

Guatemala Undergoing First Phase of Collapse

At least 22 people were killed with dozens more missing, feared dead, when a large landslide buried a crowd trying to dig out a bus from  mud.

Large areas of the country are flooded following the heaviest rains in living memory; many roads and bridges have been washed away.

About 500 bridges across Guatemala, including the main bridge that links the country to Honduras, have been destroyed or damaged.

Dozens of separate landslides, including several major occurrences have closed down at least 100km (65 miles) of the Inter-American Highway, killing dozens of people, with dozens more missing.

“A wall of earth fell on a bus and around 100 local people organized themselves to dig out the victims,” according to  fire department spokesman Sergio Vasquez. “Then another landslide came along and buried them.”

President Alvaro Colom declared a state of emergency and said: “It’s a national tragedy.”

The weekend death toll from about a dozen different landslides stands at 45, but it is expected to rise considerably.

Water reservoir sinks in Fuling District, Chongqing, China

As yet another round of torrential rains struck southern China, a combination of flooding and landslides wreak havoc across the region.

According to China’s Xinhua official news agency:

Parts of Shaoguan City in Guangdong Province have been flooded due to the sudden onslaught of heavy rains.

The city’s sewage system was unable to deal with the volume of rain, forcing the closure of some kindergartens and schools on lower levels.

A student of Guangdong Province said, “The water rose to the level of our knees. We came out from the classroom one by one, and rolled up our trousers and took off our shoes.”

The following excerpts are from the same report  released by Xinhua:

In Chongqing Municipality, continuous storms have caused a water reservoir to sink in Fuling District. A split near the top is over 100 meters long, and is getting worse.

Survivoe Chen Mingshu said, “The width of the crack is 30 centimeters, and the sunken area is more than one meter deep.”

Residents of the surrounding areas have been evacuated to safety. Local authorities have dispatched related experts to monitor the situation around the clock.

The storms have also triggered landslides in Luxi county of Hunan Province. A massive falling rock struck the roof of a restaurant, destroying not only the building, but a van parked nearby as well.

Restaurant employee Xiang Ping said, “I was in the kitchen at 9 o’clock when I heard the sound of the landslide. I immediately ran out, and the rock stopped at the gate. I could not get into the house and ran onto the road.”

Related departments have arrived at the accident site and went to great length to remove the huge rock and resume traffic.

Pakistan

A landslide, which killed at least 20 people in the remote Himalayan region of Northern Pakistan on January 4, blocked the Hunza river creating a steadily rising lake.

The water level in the lake has risen to more than 100 meters (323 feet), and is still rising.

“About 1,700 people have been forced to flee their homes after flooding swept Ayeenabad and Shishkat villages in the district of Hunza, wiping out dozens of houses about 750 kilometers (467 miles) north of Islamabad.” AFP reported.

The looming disaster also threatens Gulmit, a tourist resort near the main Karakoram Highway, which connects Pakistan and China.

“We are expecting water from the 15 kilometer-long lake to reach the spillway by May 27 and then (overflowing) will begin,” local official Asif Bilal Lodhi told AFP.

The army engineers are working around the clock to build a spillway to avert a looming disaster, however, their work will take at least 15 more days to complete.

2,300 people evacuated as an avalanche of mud and rocks buries scenic Italian town

Some 2,300 residents of small town of Maierato in the Calabria region, southern Italy were evacuated, as an “apocalyptic” landslide triggered by heavy rainfall brought down an entire hillside burying the town under an avalanche of mud and rocks. There was no report of deaths or injuries, Xinhua said.

The entire region has been severely affected by flash floods and landslides. Many small towns close to Cosenza, located at the confluence of the Busento and the Crathis rivers,  have also been evacuated recently due to the floods.

More than 100 smaller landslides in Calabria, all of which were apparently caused by heavy rains, have since been reported, sources say.

Bolivia declares a national emergency

Bolivia’s Evo Morales declares a national emergency

The Bolivian President, Evo Morales, declared a national emergency Friday amid weeks of heavy rains and flooding that have killed at least 10 people and affected some 24,000 families nationwide.

“We are declaring a national emergency across Bolivia in response to the effects of flooding, hailstorms, landslides and rivers breaking their banks,” according to a decree issued by the President and his cabinet.

The worst hit regions include Santa Cruz region, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca and Beni, news agencies reported.

The heavy rains have swept away livestock and submerged thousands of hectares of cropland and grassland in flood water.

A large landslide obliterated at least 72 homes on the outskirts of the capital La Paz on Thursday.

The government is concerned however that the Beni region could top the list of their disaster-stricken regions because Bolivia’s major rivers converge there.

Beni (capital: Trinidad), a northeastern department of Bolivia, is located in the lowlands region of the Bolivia and is the second largest department in the country (after Santa Cruz), covering about 213,600 square kilometers.

“Beni’s capital Trinidad, home to some 120,000 people, was on aler2t Friday as the water level rose within inches of breaching nearby dams.” AFP reported.

Heavy rains are expected to continue, Bolivia’s National Meteorology and Hydrology Service reported.

Although Bolivia’s rainy season falls  in January and February, the weather forecasters  believe both the climate change and El Niño have intensified the severity of the rain events.

Philippines:

November 28, 2009 – Tropical depression Urduja

Four people were killed and 13 others injured when tropical depression “Urduja” pummeled several provinces in Mindanao, Philippines according to disaster officials.

Three of the fatalities occurred as a result of landslides triggered by heavy rain and flooding.

“A total of 82,324 families or 404,623 persons were affected in 93 barangays, four cities and 23 municipalities in the provinces of Camiguin, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental in Northern Mindanao and Agusan del Norte and Dinagat Island in Caraga Region,” the NDCC reported.

“At the height of Tropical Depression ‘Urduja,’ 3,293 persons, 110 vehicles and 99 vessels were stranded in various ports in Southern Tagalog, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas and Northern Mindanao.”

Northeast Monsoons

In the first week of November,  Northeast Monsoons and strong winds affected up to 120,000 people in 165 districts throughout Mindanao, northern and eastern Luzon and other regions in the Philippines.

Argentina, Uruguay:

Severe flooding caused by the “heaviest rains in 50 years” have killed at least 10 people and forced 15,000 people to evacuate in northern parts of Argentina and Uruguay. The fatalities were caused by drowning and mudslides.

The recent heavy rain in the regions follows months of drought in NE Argentina. Extensive deforestation in the country’s northern regions has impacted the regional climate resulting in  extreme of  droughts and deluge.

The land use change, transforming forests  to agricultural land for growing soybeans, has negatively affected the soil’s water-carrying capacity, environmentalists say.

The local weather service has warned that a severe storm front could bring additional heavy rainfall, wind gusts and  hail this week.
