Deadly Tornadoes Attack U.S. Midwest

Dozens of tornadoes tore through the U.S. midsection as Kansas declared disaster emergency

More than 120 tornadoes pummel Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Indiana leaving at least 5 people dead in Woodward, NW Oklahoma, and forcing Kansas governor to declare a disaster emergency.

  • Iowa.  About 75 percent of the small town of Thurman (Fremont County) has been destroyed. The town has been evacuated with an emergency shelter in a nearby town. No power in the town, SPC reported.
  • Oklahoma.  Numerous reports of major structural damage on western and northern part of Woodward; at least 5 killed and many injured.
  • Kansas.  A tornado has caused widespread damage and power outages in Wichita, Kansas, but there were bno reports of deaths or injuries as of posting.
  • Tornadoes have damaged or destroyed many homes, businesses, a jail, a hospital and an Air Force base aaround the region, reports said.
  • Nebraska.  Baseball-sized hail tore siding from houses and shattered windows in Petersburg, about 130 miles NW of Omaha.
  • Sedgwick County, Kansas, declared a state of disaster and said the storm damage could top $280 million.
  •  Severe weather is expected to continue Sunday “from east Texas and Arkansas and up into the Great Lakes,” said Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

Tornado-devastated Dallas, Tarrant and Kaufman counties declared disaster areas

Perry has declared disaster for three counties following Tuesday’s tornadoes that destroyed or damaged an estimated 650 structures.

  • Texas, USA.  Texas Governor has declared disaster for three counties following Tuesday’s devastating tornadoes that cause significant damage to property and infrastructure.
    • Twisters affected  an estimated 650 structures, with 200 structures destroyed and at least 100 sustaining major damage, reports said.
    • Dozens of people were injured, but no fatalities were reported.
    • Up to 1,700 American Airlines and American Eagle flights were canceled since the storms, including about 300 on Friday.
    • The damage is estimated to be “in the tens of millions of dollars,” according to experts.
    • A Dallas County Judge, who had earlier signed a local disaster declaration, estimated road and bridge damage to Dallas County to exceed $1 million, a report said.

Disaster declared in Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs

Multiple tornadoes touched down in Dallas-Fort Worth  area, raking entire neighborhoods, destroying homes, flattening trailer trucks and causing numerous injuries, some critical.

  • Officials signed a disaster declaration for Lancaster, Texas, about 15 miles south of Dallas,  after a twister damaged 500 structures, more than half of them severely.
  • Widespread looting was reported.
  • In Arlington, a tornado  has caused severe damage to homes and businesses prompting the city officials to issue a disaster declaration.
  • The DFW area was also hit with thunderstorms that dumped damaging hail the size of baseballs in several places.
  • More than a 100 planes were damaged by large hail at Dallas Fort Worth  Airport, a spokesman told AP.
  • American Airlines canceled or diverted 500 flights in and out of its hub airport by late Tuesday afternoon.

Parts of Arizona buried under up to 19 inches of snow

A rare snowstorm pummeled Arizona Monday, a day before spring officially starts. This was the same system that dumped several feet of new snow on the Sierra Nevadas over the weekend.

  • Arizona, USA.  A late-winter snowstorm buried parts of Arizona under up to 19 inches of snow paralyzing  travel throughout  the state  and closing schools, including Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College.
    • The heavy snow and high winds, which exceeded 60MPH, also forced authorities to close more than 180 miles of Interstate 40 and parts on I17 in both directions, said the Arizona Highway Patrol.

Severe Thunderstorms Possible from Southern Minn. to Texas: NWS

The NWS Storm Prediction Center forecast a Moderate Risk of severe thunderstorms Monday into the late evening “for parts of central and northern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. Expect severe storms in these areas to continue overnight and be capable of damaging winds, large hail, a few tornadoes and excessive rainfall. SPC has also indicated a Slight Risk or severe thunderstorms from the southern Minnesota southward into Texas.”

  • Tornado Alley, USA.  SPC received at least 11 tornado reports in 3 states of Oklahoma, Nebraska and South Dakota.
    • At least 1 serious injury reported in Nebraska.
    • Dozens of houses significantly damaged or destroyed in the tornado-struck areas.
    • In Lincoln County, NE, 15 train cars were flipped over by a tornado, which also caused extensive damage to private vehicles, SPC said.

  • Idaho.  Bonner County in Idaho has declared a State of Emergency amid flooding caused by Thursday’s torrential rains.
    • At least a dozen roads have washed out throughout the county.

Tornadoes destroy or damage 126 homes in Michigan; flooding ruins 500 homes in W. Virginia

A powerful tornado, packing winds of about 135mph, touched down northeast of Dexter in Washtenaw County, located northwest of Ann Arbor, leveling or damaging at least 123 homes, uprooting trees and toppling power lines, sparking fires and flooding neighborhoods.

At least 3 tornado, 18 wind and 146 hail reports were received by SPC, as of posting.

  • Michigan, USA.  A powerful tornado touched down northeast of Dexter, northwest of Ann Arbor, leveling or damaging at least 123 homes, uprooting trees and felling power lines, sparking fires and flooding neighborhoods. The  tornado, packing winds of 135mph, stayed on the ground for about 30 minutes leaving behind a 10-mile path of destruction.
    • Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department told Reuters that ”there are homes leveled [in Dexter.]“
    • Sheriff’s spokesman told The AP that at least homes were destroyed and 105 others significantly damaged in Dexter and the surrounding area.
    • More than 200 people have been displaced and placed  in a temporary shelter at a nearby school.
    • Another tornado touched down in Columbiaville, Lapeer County causing damage to trees and powerliness. The tornado left a one-mile path of twisted debris, SPC said.
    • A third tornado touchdown in SSE of Ida, Monroe County, also caused damage to 3 homes, trees and powerlines.

  • West Virginia, USA.Several counties in southern West Virginia experienced widespread flooding following severe storms and torrential rains.
    • The storms caused “extreme devastation” in Logan County.
    • “Once again, severe storms have caused major flooding in our state, causing significant devastation to both homes and businesses,” said the state governor (Earl Ray Tomblin).
    • Mingo County has declared a state of emergency following the deluge.
    • The governor is expected to declare a statewide state of emergency.
    • “The communities of Verdenville, Whitman, Mud Fork, Mt. Gay, Holden and several locations right in the downtown district were affected, with the estimate of homes damaged or destroyed being over 500 as of now,” said a report.
    • At least a dozen roads and bridges in Logan County alone were closed due to high water, mudslides, washouts and rock falls, reports said.
    • The towns of Griffithsville and Yawkey in Lincoln County were also severely hit by flooding.

States of emergency have been declared in four south Louisiana parishes— Acadia, Lafayette, St. Landry and St. Martin—after floodwaters from severe thunderstorms caused widespread flooding.

  • Louisiana, USA.  State officials declared states of emergency in four south Louisiana parishes—Acadia, Lafayette, St. Landry and St. Martin—after floodwaters from severe thunderstorms caused widespread flooding.
    • “We had up to 7 feet of water on some streets,” said Capt. Kip Judice, the sheriff’s spokesman. “We had no deaths or injuries but a lot of near calls.”
    • SPC received reports of 4 tornadoes in Louisiana, one of which caused significant damage in Acadia.

  • Kentucky, USA.  FEMA has added several more Kentucky counties to the disaster declaration for the state following he deadly tornadoes and violent storms that left at least 22 people dead and caused widespread damage.
    • Currently, there are 16 counties in the Kentucky disaster declaration:  BATH, CAMPBELL, CARROLL, GRANT, JOHNSON, KENTON, LAUREL, LAWRENCE, MAGOFFIN, MARTIN, MENIFEE, MONTGOMERY, MORGAN, PENDLETON, ROWAN and WOLFE.

  • Georgia, USA.   EF1 tornado with winds of about 95mph (153 km/hr) struck Rome (Floyd County), Ga., killing at least one personand devastating a vast area.
    • The twister damaged about 100 homes in Kingston Highway area, reports said.
    • This was the second time in recent months that Floyd County was hit by a tornado.
    • Tornado touched down in Floyd County at about 10:15pm Wednesday, just west of the Maplewood subdivision in Rome, and traveled 3.25 miles, SPC said.

Southern U.S. Wintertime Tornado Outbreak

Several damage surveys were completed today in the wake of a tornado outbreak in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama last night. Most of the damage surveyed so far has been rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating considerable damage with wind speeds reaching between 111 and 135 mph. However, the tornado that passed through Clay, Alabama, which is just north of Birmingham has been rated an EF-3. This tornado produced significant damage and was capable of wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. (Source: NWS)

  • The Storm Prediction Center received 23 tornado reports, 118 high wind reports and 35 large hail reports from Sunday’s outbreak:

  • Alabama: 9
  • Mississippi:  2

  • Georgia: 2 tornadoes struck Macon and Dooly Counties Saturday, NWS said.

Tornadoes have destroyed or damaged about 500 homes throughout the region and uprooted/snapped thousands of trees.

Other Global Disasters

  • Papua New Guinea (PNG). A massive landslide has completely buried two villages in PNG.
    • “The landslide is about a kilometer long and about 300 meters wide. There are people buried underneath and a number of them are from what I have heard, children.” Local MP Francis Potape has told Radio Australia.
    • At least 40 people are reportedly missing, reports said.
    • The landslide occurred near Exxon-Mobil’s liquefied natural gas project in the new Hela Province, blocking the main road and stopping work at the site and a nearby airfield.

43 Tornadoes Reported in 5 States

Tornadoes move across North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Texas

The strongest tornadoes touched down in Graham and Norton counties (about 10 miles north of Hill City), Kansas, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

NWS conducted a storm damage survey and has preliminarily rated one of the tornadoes as an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

Massachusetts Tornadoes Kill at least 4

Deadly tornadoes spawned by extreme weather in western Massachusetts kill at least 4

Massachusetts Governor said one person was killed in Springfield (about 40 others were injured), two in Westfield and one in Brimfield, as he declared a state of emergency Wednesday evening and called for 1,000 National Guard to assist with cleanup.

The rare tornadoes left a trail of devastation across 24 towns, destroying roofs, damaging structure, uprooting trees and power lines.

At least 18 tornadoes were reported on Wednesday in Massachusetts, Kansas, Nebraska and California.

Some 364 severe weather reports received by SPC on June 1 included 17 tornado sightings in 4 states, as of posting.

A tornado watch is in effect in the Boston area until 11:00pm EDT June 1, with heavy showers and thunderstorms expected, NWS said, adding that the region was also under “threat of large hail and damaging wind.”

Political Manipulation of Joplin Tornado Deaths Continue

Meanwhile, the Missouri Department of Public Safety, which has taken over the Joplin tornado deaths investigation, has once again diluted the fatality figures. The Department said on Wednesday that it had counted only 134 sets of human remains. “On Tuesday, the department reported that 146 sets of human remains, some from dismembered bodies, had been recovered.”

FIRE-EARTH believes that such heavy-handed political manipulation of the statistics by the government is a clear and desperate attempt to deny the human factor in the exponentially increasing impact of climate change by way of associating the worst disasters with the past.

However, looming Mega Disasters (forecasts are based on FIRE-EARTH and EDRO dynamic models) will shatter ALL historical records by such massive margins that the politicians could no longer fabricate or fiddle the stats.

Joplin Tornado: Deadliest in Recorded History

Number of the missing is changing faster than Missouri officials can count

29 Missing in Joplin: Missouri officials rapidly reduce number of people unaccounted for after the deadly tornado!  

Other Official Stats

  • Sets of remains, including partial remains: 146 (Source: City Manager Mark Rohr quoting the Missouri Highway Patrol)
  • Missing in Joplin: 29  (down from 43 only  8 hours earlier, and from 1,500 six days earlier.)
  • No. of victims who have been positively identified: 101 (as of 3:00pm local time on Monday)
  • No. of school children killed in the tornado: 7  (from Joplin School District)
  • Number of teenage victims:  11 under the age of 18
  • About 5,000 people have so far registered with the FEMA seeking housing.

City officials said about 8,000 houses and apartment buildings were destroyed by the EF-5 tornado that struck Joplin on May 22, 2010.
