New Episodes of Intense Seismicity Before Year End Highly Probable
Earthquake Measuring Up to 6.7 Mw Strikes Southeast of the Loyalty Islands
Strong Earthquake Measuring up to Magnitude 6.7 struck 120 km west of Ile Hunter, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, at a depth of about 60km on December 09, 2009 at 09:46 UTC.
The earthquake occurred about 42 km NNW of the Matthew Island volcano. Since November 2008 at least a half dozen strong quakes measuring between 6.1 and 6.8Mw have struck close to the volcano.
