China’s second major mine disaster in 4 days

A gas explosion at a coalmine in central China kills at least 19 miners and traps 25

The explosion in China’s coalmine, the world’s deadliest, was second major mine disaster in less than a week.

Disasters at coalmines, now a weekly occurrence in China, killed a reported 2,631 workers last year. The reported figure of nearly 7,000 deaths in 2002 was even more horrendous.

About 50 miners managed to escape after the Wednesday blast, which was caused by an underground gas leak, according to China’s official News Agency, Xinhua.

News of the explosion came amid another rescue operation at the Wangjialing coalmine in Shanxi province, northern China, where 153 miners were trapped underground after  the main mineshaft was flooded.

The Wangjialing mine disaster occurred because the officials ignored safety rules in a rush to resume mining operation after a period of “renovation,” a government safety body reported.

“The pipe sending coal out of the mine was cut in half by the blast. A nearby two-story building caved in,” said a witness who refused to give his name, Xinhua reported.
