At least 300 dead, 8,000 injured many others buried

Fire-Earth Moderators had earlier predicted that the death toll from the quake could rise.

The epicenter of the earthquake, reported as a 7.1Mw,  was located in Yushu County, a sparsely populated area which is  home to ethnic Tibetan farmers and herders, officials said.

Up to 90% of buildings near the epicenter have collapsed, according to officials.

“In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake. In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off,” an eyewitness told reporters.

“Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members.”

“The homes are built with thick walls and are strong, but if they collapsed they could hurt many people inside,” he said.

Rich in natural gas, the Yushu County has a population of 80,000 and is  heavily mined for coal, copper and tin.

    Death toll from quake has now reached 589 dead.
    Many thousands have been injured.

    UPDATE:
    At least 400 are dead and many thousands injured.
    Thousands more are made homeless.
