M6.2 Quake Strikes Izu Islands, Japan Region

Posted by feww on May 3, 2010

More Shocks Could Strike Japan Region

Strong Earthquake Measuring up to 6.2Mw Strikes Izu Islands, Japan Region

The quake, centered at 29.8N, 141.6E,  struck Torishima Kinkai region at a depth of about 50km on Monday, 03 May 2010 19:28 JST (10:28UTC), Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.

Tsunami Status

JMA did NOT issue any tsunami warnings, advisory or watch, probably due to the fact that the shock occurred deep below the ocean surface.

Approximate Distances (USGS/EHP)

  • 300 km (190 miles) NNW of Chichi-shima, Bonin Islands, Japan
  • 405 km (250 miles) SSE of Hachijo-jima, Izu Islands, Japan
  • 535 km (335 miles) N of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Japan
  • 685 km (425 miles) S of TOKYO, Japan

Fire-Earth Forecasts:

    1. More shocks, possibly stronger than this quake, could strike Japan Region as a result of a new wave of seismic activity in the region.

    2. Intense volcanic activity may occur in Japan Region in 2010.

    Lightning Kills 23

Posted by feww on May 3, 2010

Lightning kills 23 people in Bangladesh and injures dozens more

Most of the victims were farmers working in the fields, said a local report. Twenty-one of the victims were killed on Sunday and two on Saturday.

If you thought that the lightning deaths in the Bangladesh killing fields set a new record, you’d probably be right because the average number of people killed by lightning in the U.S. is 70 per year, and the U.S. population is 1.9 times that of Bangladesh.

According to National Weather Service (NWS), lightning is a major cause of storm-related deaths in the United States. An average of 58 lightning fatalities were reported over the past 30 or so years, in the U.S., making it deadlier than  hurricanes and tornadoes in most years. Although the true figure could be as many as 70 deaths per year.

Only about 1 in 10 of  lightning victims are killed, according to NWS Storm Data (see following stats), with  the other 90% receiving various degrees of disability.

ODDS OF BECOMING A LIGHTNING VICTIM

    • U.S. 2000 Census population (as of 2008):   300,000,000
    • Number of Deaths Actually Reported:     60
    • Estimated number of actual U.S. Deaths:     60
    • Number of Injuries Reported:     340     (total deaths and injuries = 400)
    • Estimated number of actual Injuries:     540     (total deaths and injuries = 600)
    • Odds of being struck by lightning in a given year (reported deaths + injuries) :    1/750,000
    • Odds of being struck by lightning in a given year (estimated total deaths + injuries):     1/500,000
    • Odds of being struck in your lifetime (Est. 80 years):     1/6,250
    • Odds you will be affected by someone being struck (Ten people affected for every one struck):   1/625

If the massive rise in the number of deaths and injuries caused by lightning were to develop into a pattern, it would serve as yet another ominous warning concerning the ever-increasing intensity in the impact of human-enhanced natural disasters.

Oil Spill Attack on America – UPDATE May 3

Posted by feww on May 3, 2010

We’re dealing with a massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster—Obama

“The oil that is still leaking from the well could seriously damage the economy and the environment of our Gulf states.

“And it could extend for a long time. It could jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of Americans who call this place home.” Mr Obama added.

We know that, Mr President. Why aren’t you doing something about it?

    NEWS and UPDATES:

“NOAA is restricting fishing for a minimum of ten days in federal waters most affected by the BP oil spill, largely between Louisiana state waters at the mouth of the Mississippi River to waters off Florida’s Pensacola Bay. The closure is effective immediately,”the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement.

“The scenario is a very grave scenario. You’re looking at potentially 90 days before you ultimately get to what is the ultimate solution.”  Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. [Could you say that one more time?]

Gov. Robert Riley has ordered the National Guard to construct barriers against the oil slick drifting toward Alabama because, he said, about 80% of  boom laid down off the gulf coast had destroyed  by  rough seas.

When asked why there was no plan to deal with the disaster at the oil well,  BP PLC Chairman Lamar McKay said it “seemed inconceivable” that equipment installed to avert a blowout would fail.

    Seafood Quality

“Although crude oil has the potential to taint seafood with flavors and odors caused by exposure to hydrocarbon chemicals, the public should not be concerned about the safety of seafood in the stores at this time.” FDA said in a statement Dated April 30, 2010.

Just How Many Birds Are Out There in the Coastal Marshlands

No one told the birds to stay behind the boom line. Then again, it makes precious little difference because the waves easily push the oil over the boom and deposit the stick stuff on the beaches. Further, Gov. Robert Riley of Alabama says about 80% of  boom laid down off the coast have been broken down. Image credit: Sean Gardner/Greenpeace handout/via Reuters. Click image to enlarge.

    Oil Stats:

    • How many Active Platforms in GOM? See image below.
    • How Many Active Leases? There were 7,310 leases in March 2008.
    • How Much Crude Oil  in the Damaged Well? Up to 250 million BOE [Fire-Earth estimate.]
    • GOM Oil as a Percentage of Total US Output: 25%, deepwater operations account for 18% (2007).

Quote for the Day: “Buffett ‘n’ BP”

In the same way the Artifact of America (Oracle of Omaha) is staunchly defending the Wall Street Gangsters, Goldmn Sachs for their self-indulgence, he should defend the pirates of the Gulf, BP, for their greed—Blog reader C.B.

The damage is not just about birds and fish, it’s also about people. Blog reader KBD

Deadly storms kill at least 7 in Tenn., 5 in Miss.

Posted by feww on May 3, 2010

Deadly line of thunderstorms strikes Tennessee and northern Mississippi, killing at least 12 people, damaging homes and closing most of highways

The storms were accompanied by an extreme rain event forcing thousands of people to evacuate, while hundreds of others had to be plucked from rooftops, as flood waters from overflowing rivers and creeks submerged neighborhoods throughout the region.

At least 33cm (13 inches) of of rain fell in Nashville over the weekend, almost double the previous record of 17cm that fell in 1979 when Hurricane Fredrick. struck.

“That is an astonishing amount of rain in a 24- or 36-hour period,” Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said, adding that it was an “unprecedented rain event.”

Schools, hospitals and government buildings also were flooded, forcing many schools in middle Tennessee to close for Monday.

According to one emergency official and long term resident of Nashville,  it was the worst flooding in living memory. “I’ve never seen it this high,” said  Donnie Smith. “I’m sure that it’s rained this hard at one time, but never for this much of an extended period.”

Meanwhile, tornadoes obliterated homes, “overturned vehicles and uprooted trees were scattered across central Arkansas on Saturday after several tornadoes ripped through the state, killing a woman and injuring two dozen others,” AP quoted authorities as saying.

Video footage show the extent of deluge, and a large building being washed away.
