600-mile megalopolis
Atlantic Seaboard Conurbation at Night
The so-called Atlantic Seaboard Conurbation (ASC) is one of the largest megalopolises in the world. Sitting along East Coast of the US, it stretches more than 1,000 km (600 miles).
ASC includes “major economic, governmental, and cultural centers of Boston, Massachusetts; New York, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, District of Columbia.” Boston (located off the image to the northeast) is not included in this astronaut photograph. Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia, seen at image lower left are NOT considered part of the ASC. Astronaut photograph ISS027-E-20129 was acquired on April 6, 2011 by the Expedition 27 crew.
