• Nigeria.At least 54 people have been killed in ethnic clashes between the Ezza and Ezilo peoples in the eastern Nigeria’s state of Ebonyi due to land disputes.
  • Nigerian President Jonathan declared a state of emergency in parts of the country after attacks from Boko Haram, an extremist group said to be opposed to Western education, including one on Christmas Day which left dozens of people dead in in Abuja.
  • The emergency is in force in parts of the Yobe and Borno states in the northeast, Plateau state in central Nigeria and Niger state in the west, reports said.
