Central Cuba has received record 900mm of rain this month
A record rainfall of at least 900mm (35.4in) in Sancti Spiritus province so far this month has prompted mass evacuations of more than 8,500 people. Two people were reportedly killed after the intense downpour flooded Zaza valley.
Residents downstream from the Río Zaza reservoir, Cuba’s largest, were forced to evacuate after torrential rains forced the authorities to open the floodgates to open, said a report.
The reservoir, located about 350 km east of Havana, held about “200 million cubic meters as recently as May 22, after months of drought. In what experts say is a 40-year record, heavy rains throughout central Cuba raised the Zaza reservoir’s water level beyond 1 billion cubic meters in a matter of 48 hours.”
The Zaza reservoir provides 17 percent of Cuba’s sweet water fish supply, the report said.
The downpour is will continue in central provinces, and could spread to the west, said the National Meteorology Institute.

Fast-moving wildfire consumes 23,000 acres in Michigan
Luce and Schoolcraft counties in Upper Peninsula were declared disaster areas, while an outdoor burning ban was issued for 49 Michigan counties.
Many homes and several tourist destinations in Lake Superior State Forest have been evacuated in the region, as a fast moving wildfire called Duck Lake Fire consumes about 23,000 acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, destroying scores of structures including vacation homes.
“The whole sky is just smoke,” said Beverly Holmes, Newberry village manager, who was driving on a highway east of town, AP reported. “It’s like a heavy fog.”
The fire is threatening a resort in Pike Lake area.
A second blaze at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in neighboring Schoolcraft County, which was also sparked by lightning, had consumed about 4,000 acres of forest and wetland, as of posting.
Other Wildfires
- Florida, USA. “A wildfire that is burning in Orlando blew heavy smoke near the busy hotel and attractions district of Walt Disney world at the start of the busy Memorial Day weekend,” a report said.
- New Mexico, USA. The massive Whitewater-Baldy blaze ( Gila Wilderness blaze), which has destroyed more than 2 dozen cabins and outbuilding in the Willow Creek Subdivision, Gila National forest, has grown to about 90,000 acres.
- The nearby town of Mogollon is under a voluntary evacuation.
- The two blazes, which merged forming the giant Gila Wilderness fire, were ignited buy lightning
- Utah, USA. Lightning also sparked a large blaze near Great Salt Lake, Utah, which has consumed about 4,000 acres.
- Nevada, USA. Fire is still raging south of Carson City. The Topaz Ranch Estates wildfire has so far consumed about 35km² of brush, destroying two dozen homes and outbuildings.
- Arizona, USA. The so-called Gladiator Fire, currently Arizona’s largest wildfire, is still raging in the Grand Canyon. The massive blaze has so far consumed about 70km² of ponderosa pine and brush some 65km north of Phoenix. The fire prompted evacuations last week.

China to increase artificial precipitation by 5 percent in five years: Officials
China to add more than 7,000 rocket launchers, at least 50 planes and 7,000 guns to its arsenal targeting the weather, China Daily reported.
“Many of the nation’s natural and agricultural disasters, especially those involving grain and tobacco, are caused by drought,” said Zheng Guoguang, administrator of the China Meteorological Administration.
“With so many areas in China, especially rural areas, vulnerable to storms, blizzards, hail and other natural disasters, the demand has been rapidly increasing to use science and technology to reduce the risks.”

“Aircraft, guns and rockets will be used to prevent unpredictable weather from disrupting major events.” Weather manipulation started in 1958, said Wang Guanghe, deputy director of the artificial weather intervention center under the China Meteorological Administration, who dismissed concerns over hazards associated to the weather-manipulation projects.
“Weather modification involves seeding clouds with grains of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) or tiny particles of silver iodide to stimulate rainfall. Its use has been expanding nationally in recent years to tackle drought, hailstones, forest fires and floods,” according to the report.
[MODERATORS’ NOTE: Both the frequency and intensity of “drought, hailstones, forest fires and floods” in China have increased over the past decades.]

China’s air force bombers emptied their deadly load on ice-jammed rivers in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, March 20, 2012. (Xinhua). More images…
“Some 560,000 manipulations of the weather have been conducted since 2002 using rockets and projectiles carrying dry ice or silver iodide,” said a report.
“Aircraft, guns and rockets will be used to prevent unpredictable weather from disrupting major events.”
Global Disasters
- Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil-fuel burning rose to a record high of 31.6 gigatons (Gt), a rise of 1 Gt or 3.2 percent on 2010, according to IEA preliminary estimates released today.
- Coal accounted for 45% of total energy-related CO2 emissions in 2011, followed by oil (35%) and natural gas (20%), IEA said.
- “India’s emissions rose by 140 Mt, or 8.7%, moving it ahead of Russia to become the fourth largest emitter behind China, the United States, and the European Union. Despite these increases, per-capita CO2 emissions in China and India still remain just 63% and 15% of the OECD average respectively.”
- Europe. Europe is forecast to spend more than US$500 billion on oil imports in 2012, IEA reported.
- “From 2000 to 2010 the average amount spent on oil imports in Europe was USD182 billion a year. In 2011 oil imports reached a record of USD488 billion.”

Ten times more cases of Pertussis reported in 2012 than same period last year
Pertussis, aka whooping cough, is a highly infectious respiratory illness that can be deadly to young infants. The disease is caused by Bordetella pertussis bacterium, which spreads through coughing and sneezing [airborne droplets,] and has an incubation period of up to 14 days.
- “There have been a total of 1,484 cases reported statewide through week 19, compared to 134 reported cases in 2011 during the same time period. Dates for the 2011/2012 comparison were based on LHJ notification date.” Washington State DOH reported.
- Whooping cough affects about 50 million people globally each year and has a mortality rate of about 1 percent.

The overall incidence rate year to date is 22.0 pertussis cases per 100,000 Washington residents and the rate of disease in infants under one year of age, 114.1 per 100,000, remains higher than rates in all other age groups (see Table 2). This equates to an annualized overall rate of pertussis in Washington residents of 60.3 per 100,000 persons with a rate in infants of 312.2 per 100,000 should this trend continue throughout 2012. One hundred and one infants under one year of age were reported as having whooping cough and twenty-six of them were hospitalized. Of those hospitalized, twenty (77%) were very young (three months of age or younger). Source: DOH 348-254 May 2012
