‘Brain-eating’ amoeba outbreak claims 10 lives in Pakistan
The deadly outbreak has claimed at least 10 lives, including two children, with the latest three deaths occurring last week.
- “The three people who died in September had not been to a swimming pool. It is a serious cause for concern that people are contracting the infection by using tap water,” Pakistan’s Health Minister told reporters.
- N. fowleri has an estimated fatality rate of 98%.
- N. fowleri deaths have previously been reported in Czechoslovakia, Pakistan, United Kingdom, and the U.S. (Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia).

Russia: Severe flooding prompted the officials in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan to declare a state of emergency.
- Mudflows caused by extreme rain events have claimed at least 7 lives and damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes in the southern Russian city of Derbent, said a report.
- At least 1,100 people including 280 children have been displaced.
