Britain battered by deadly winds and rain

‘Shocking scenes of flooding in Cornwall and around the country’: UK Prime Minister

Hundreds of homes in the UK were damaged after flooding inundated parts of the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Wiltshire,  Worcestershire, Yorkshire and areas of Cambridgeshire and Gloucestershire, as deadly winds and rain claim at least two lives and force many people to flee their homes, reports said.

  • The U.K. Environment Agency has issued flood warnings  to more than 70,000 homes over the past few days.
  • Many roads have been closed due to flooding, cutting off towns across SW England.
  • ‘There are more than 270 flood alerts – indicating people should prepare for possible flooding – in England and Wales and more than 220 other flood warnings in place across England, which mean people should take action because flooding is expected,’ said a report.
  • The mayor of Malmesbury, England’s oldest town, described the deluge as the worst flooding in 70 years.
    • “It’s the worst flooding in 70 years, I was a boy in Malmesbury and I’ve never seen water like it. The houses won’t dry out for weeks and months. There were cars with water up to their bonnets.” He said.
  • At least four people were killed and one person reported as missing.
