Copahue volcano activity could intensify
Authorities in Argentina and Chile have raised the alert at Copahue volcano in Biobio region to the highest level after detecting continued seismic activity on Sunday.

A column of ash and smoke from Copahue volcano rises above the town of Caviahue, a popular ski resort in Neuquen province, Argentina, some 1500 km SW of the capital Buenos Aires. Photo: AFP. Image may be subject to copyright.
- Copahue first erupted on Saturday, showering ash on nearby villages and prompting many to evacuate.
- “The intensity of seismic signals suggests the eruption in progress is on the smaller side [however] we cannot discount the possibility that the activity could turn into a larger eruption,” said a spokesman for the Chilean Geology and Mining Services.
- The 2,970-meter volcano is in SW Argentina’s Neuquen province, near the Chilean border.
- About 3,000 people live in the vicinity of the massive volcano, including the residents of Copahue, the town of Caviahue and indigenous Mapuche communities.
- The ash plume rose to a height of about 1.5km (5,000ft) above the crater, said Chile’s emergency office (ONEMI).

Three weather systems pound the U.S., as freezing temperatures kill/ injure hundreds in Russia
The storms have knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers across Nebraska and Iowa, reports said.
“Significant snow will impact all or parts of 21 states—five by a storm in the Pacific Northwest, two by a storm in New England and 14 by the storm in the middle of the country.” NOAA reported.
One storm is winding down in Northern New England after dropping 8-14 inches on northern Maine. The system moving into the Rockies and Central Plains will gain strength today and a new system is moving onshore in the Pacific Northwest, where another 12-20 inches are in the forecast.
The northwest storm will affect parts of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Montana. The New England storm has affected mostly Main and New Hampshire. The monster storm taking over much of the Plains will impact significant parts of Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana.
Russia
Hundreds of people are dead or injured, as Russia endures its harshest winter in more than 7 decades, with temperatures dipping to as low as minus 50ºC (-58ºF).
“The country has not witnessed such a long cold spell since 1938, meteorologists said, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees lower than the seasonal norm all over Russia.” RIA Novosti reported.
- Russia’s Emergency Ministry has issued warnings throughout 15 regions, as record cold temperatures are forecast to linger for several more days.
- The temperatures fell to -18ºC Moscow region and -50 degrees in Siberia on Wednesday.
- The temperatures will plunge to as low as -25ºC in the Moscow-2 region, forecasters said.
- “Across the country, heat pipelines have broken down due to the cold. In southeastern Russia’s Samara, the cold has broken down many heat pipelines, leaving hundreds of homes without heating, including an orphanage and a rest house. Many schools and kindergartens have been closed for almost a week.” RIA Novosti reported.
- “The cold spell, along with snowfalls, has disrupted flights all over the country, and led to huge traffic jams. In the southern city of Rostov-on-Don some highways were closed due to snowfalls over the past two days, triggering a traffic collapse.”

28 gunned down in another shameful display of Earth dwellers sick psyche
Dressed in black battle fatigues and a military vest, a heavily armed gunman walked into an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, killing at least 27 people, including 20 children and himself. The 28th victim, the alleged shooter’s mother was later found dead at her home.
Wondered Why!!
Could it be that the countless massacres of women and children by the U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan and elsewhere had something to do with this, a ‘karmic’ fallout of the serial wars perhaps?
“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years,” Obama said during a televised appearance in the White House.
They Were All-American Kids!!
“I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do,” said the Mechanic of Death in Chief.
After all, these were “beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” living in a wealthy, wooded New England town, not some Afghan kids living in squalor who would grow up to be terrorists [sic.]
“Our hearts are broken today, for the parents, and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children and for the families of the adults who were lost,” said the Ace of Spades, calling for “meaningful action” to prevent more massacres.
Thousands of Afghan children and adults have been killed by heavily armed gunmen dressed in battle fatigues and military vests in Obama’s war of terror on Afghanistan.

Genetically Modified Mosquitoes? What could possibly go wrong?!
Aedes aegypti, aka the yellow fever mosquito, is a vector for transmitting several tropical disease viruses including dengue fever, Chikungunya (CHIKV) and yellow fever.

This 2006 photograph depicts a female Aedes aegypti mosquito as she acquires a blood meal from her human host, the biomedical photographer, James Gathany, at the Centers for Disease Control. Dengue fever is caused by four virus strains spread by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. (Photo Credit: James Gathany/University of Notre Dame).
- Dengue fever is a virus-caused tropical disease that is spread by mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
- Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are an invasive, domestic species with tropical and subtropical worldwide distribution that originated in Africa.
- The mosquito aquatic cycle, the life cycle from egg to larvae, pupae, and to an adult mosquito, takes 7-8 days and occurs in water.
- The life span for adult mosquitoes is about 3-4 weeks.
- Only the female mosquito bites for blood, which she needs to produce eggs.
- Female mosquitoes lay dozens of eggs up to 5 times during their life time.
- Florida scientists have proposed to unleash swarms of genetically modified male mosquitoes into the ecosystem in the hope that the mutant mosquitoes, ‘dubbed Frankenflies,’ would mate with healthy females and pass on their lab-engineered deadly birth defects.
- A Florida Keys resident has posted a petition, “Say No to Genetically Modified Mosquitoes Release in the Florida Keys,” on Change.org.
- “Even though the local community in the Florida Keys has spoken – we even passed an ordinance demanding more testing – Oxitec is trying to use a loophole by applying to the FDA for an ‘animal bug’ patent. This could mean these mutant mosquitoes could be released at any point against the wishes of locals and the scientific community. We need to make sure the FDA does not approve Oxitec’s patent.” The petition says.“Nearly all experiments with genetically-modified crops have eventually resulted in unintended consequences: superweeds more resistant to herbicides, mutated and resistant insects also collateral damage to ecosystems. A recent news story reported that the monarch butterfly population is down by half in areas where Roundup Ready GM crops are doused with ultra-high levels of herbicides that wipe out the monarch’s favorite milkweed plant.”
