Curfew enforced in riot-hit Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India

Curfew remained in force in riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar on Monday amid sectarian violence which has left at least 28 people dead and 60 others injured in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP).

At least 200 people have been arrested and complaints registered against 1000 others, including four Members of Legislative Assembly from India’s Bharatiya Janata Party and a former Indian National Congress MP, said a report.

the violence started on August 27 when three people were killed in Kawal town of Muzaffarnagar over an incident of “eve-teasing,” the UP Governor has said.

[Eve-teasing is a euphemism used in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan for public sexual molestation of women by men, with the word “Eve” referring to the biblical first woman. Editor]

UP, India’s most populous and politically crucial state, was at the heart of some of India’s worst communal clashes in 1992 following destruction of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya.

It was destroyed after a political rally developed into a riot involving about 200,000 people. Up to 3,000 people were killed in ensuing riots in India’s major cities including Delhi and Mumbai.
