Okinawa Battered by 2nd Typhoon in 24 Hrs

Okinawa and Miyako Islands battered by Typhoon FITOW Followed by Typhoon DANAS

FITOW uprooted trees and knocked down utility posts, tearing rooftops and causing blackouts of thousands of homes in Miyakojima city; however, the full extent of damaged caused by Typhoon DANAS was not known, as of posting.

Okinawa Island almost bore the full brunt of Cat 4 Typhoon DANAS, several hours ago.

DANAS is a “heat-seeking,” “custom-made” typhoon in FIRE-EARTH parlance, “designed” to impact the full length of Japan islands, and at this stage of its life it looks fully capable of causing damage comparable only to Hurricane SANDY. We’ll see!

Location and Impact Forecast

DANAS was near 630 km SSW of Fukuoka, Kyushu, at 13:00UTC on October 7, 2013.

The typhoon is expected to dump as much as 200 mm of rain on Japan’s Amami region and southern Kyushu and 150 mm on Okinawa and northern Kyushu by Tuesday morning, according to local reports.

San Carlos Declares State of Emergency Over PG&E Pipeline
“City officials in San Carlos, Calif. have declared a State of Emergency after a series of internal PG&E e-mails sparked safety concerns over a natural gas line that runs through the city. Issues with the gas line include certain sections made up of a “thin wall” pipe made in 1929 and external corrosion with fatigue cracks on the pipe. City leaders on Friday also requested PG&E shut down the pipeline until a hearing could be conducted with CPUC to address the issue. PG&E declined the request, according to city officials. The city on Friday night obtained a temporary injunction against PG&E in San Mateo County Superior Court requiring PG&E to immediately shut off service to pipeline 147. Egypt

At least 55 killed, over 200 wounded amid new wave of protests in Egypt

Clashes between opponents and supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi left at least 55 people dead and more than 200 wounded across the country on Sunday,  one of the bloodiest days since the “USrael-controlled” army seized power in a coup.

Protesters chanted: “The coup is terrorism” and “Sisi [the military ruler] is a killer.”

Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the man who toppled Morsi said: “There are a lot of people who think Egypt’s army can be broken. Egypt’s army is like a pyramid but it is a pyramid because the people of Egypt support it.”

The military says it was responding to the will of the people. “We are answerable to God and to you Egyptians for the mandate [by the] Egyptian people towards the army and police to preserve Egypt,” said Sisi.

Italy

194 Bodies Found in Migrant Shipwreck Off the Coast of Sicily

Search teams have now recovered a total of 194 bodies in and around the vessel that sank on Thursday near the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

Of the 518 African migrants on the boat 155 survived, which leave another 169 other missing presumed dead.

The 20-meter fishing vessel carrying mainly Eritrean and Somalian asylum seekers, including dozens of women and children, caught fire and sank early Thursday off the coast of Lampedusa, said reports.

Iraq

Another day of deadly violence ended Sunday with at least 46 people killed and 180 others wounded.

Suicide bombers. truck bombers, gunfire and IEDs were responsible for the carnage across at least 7 Iraqi death centers of Baghdad,
Qabak, Tal Afar, Mosul, Kirkuk, Dour and Tuz, said reports.

Flooding in Kentucky, Raging Wildfires in California

Many rescued in Kentucky amid severe flooding caused by heavy rains

At least 12 people were rescued from floodwaters and about 400 others evacuated after torrential rains hit Louisville area.

“The deluge swamped low-lying areas and flooded streets, trapping people in their homes and cars, as the area was drenched with 6 inches of rain in less than 24 hours,” said a report.

Wildfire burns 1,500 acres, forces hundreds of evacuations

A raging brushfire at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base forced the evacuation of 230 residents from the O’Neill Heights housing area and 22 patients from the base hospital, said a report.

The blaze damaged at least four buildings, but no injuries were reported.

“More than 200 firefighters from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection were battling the blaze. They were assisted by six air tankers and five helicopters,” said the report.

Large blaze reported in southeast Orange County

Meantime, a large blaze was burning out of control in Silverado, an unincorporated area of southeast Orange County, near the edge of the Cleveland National Forest.

The blaze was driven by Santa Ana winds of about 10 mph amid extremely dry conditions, with relative humidity of 7%, LATimes reported.

“The fire started about 10:10 a.m. in a large mulch pile at a nursery in the 27900 block of Baker Canyon Road, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.”

More than 125 fire personnel were trying to contain the flames, so far without any success. The exact size of the fire was not known, as of posting.

FITOW Turns Deadly

Typhoon FITOW: two dead; 574,000 evacuated, 177,000 displaced; homes destroyed; power cut off to millions

Typhoon FITOW made landfall in east China’s Fujian Province early Monday, with winds of up to 201 km per hour, China’s National Meteorological Center said.

As of Monday, FITOW had claimed at least two lives, forcing 574,000 people to evacuate and 35,795 vessels to return to harbor for shelter, said a report.

FITOW, the 23rd typhoon to hit China this year, continued to move northwest weakening rapidly, said the center. Authorities issued a “Red Alert,” China’s highest weather warning, on Sunday.

“Rainstorm and winds up to 201 km per hour slashed Cangnan County and the Nanji Island Township, and some houses collapsed in the county, said the Wenzhou flood control headquarters,” the report said.

Some 177,000 people have been displaced In Fujian province, and about 30,000 fishing boats called to shore for shelter.

“The typhoon has caused suspension of bullet trains in several cities in Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangxi and halted services on at least 35 lines that pass cities on the typhoon route, including services between Beijing and Nanjing, Shanghai, Ningbo, Fuzhou and Xiamen,” said the report.

The typhoon also forced he “suspension of bullet trains in several cities in Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangxi and halted services on at least 35 lines that pass cities on the typhoon route, including services between Beijing and Nanjing, Shanghai, Ningbo, Fuzhou and Xiamen.”

Dozens of flights from Zhejiang Province including flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Kunming weer cancelled, and  coach services between Shanghai and Wenzhou were also suspended on Sunday.

Typhoon USAGI, the 19th typhoon of the year, killed dozens of people in southern Guangdong province, destroying at least 7,100 homes and causing direct economic losses of 3.24 billion yuan ($529.5 million) late September.
