Nobel Committee have done it again!

They’ve awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science to three American professors—Eugene F. Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert J. Shiller. 

Ignoring for a moment that economy is not even a science … Why did they award the prize to the U.S. academics?

Because they showed that asset prices move unpredictably in the short term, but with greater predictability over longer periods.

UK Police colluded in secret blacklist of 3,213 building workers

Police officers across the United Kingdom “supplied information on workers to a blacklist operation run by Britain’s biggest construction companies, the police watchdog has told lawyers representing victims,” said a report.

Campaigners for the 3,213 blacklisted workers call the findings by the UK’s IPCC as “absolute evidence” of a conspiracy between the state and industry, said the report.

“The blacklist, run by a company called the Consulting Association, funded by 40 major firms in the construction industry including Balfour Beatty and Sir Robert McAlpine, was discovered in 2009 after a raid by the information commissioner’s office. Since then, the victims have fought to find out who was providing information against them. The IPCC’s correspondence is regarded as a major breakthrough.” Read more…

U.S. veterans groups protest shutdown at White House gates

“Veteran and Tea Party groups protested the U.S. government shutdown in Washington on Sunday, taking down barricades around the World War Two memorial on the National Mall before marching to the gates of the White House,” said a report.

Anti-migrant riot in southern Moscow

Police have detained about 400 protestors amid anti-migrant riots that broke out on Sunday in Moscow’s southern district of Biryulyovo. At least 20 people were injured, said a report.

“Several thousand people rioted in Biryulyovo on Sunday, storming a shopping center where migrants worked, tipping over cars, constructing barricades and throwing stones at the police in protest of last week’s murder of a 25-year-old local resident Yegor Shcherbakov, who was stabbed to death while walking home with his girlfriend. The attacker was identified as a migrant by Russian media.”

Russian police arrest 1,200 at Vegetable Warehouse Targeted in Anti-Migrant Riots

Russian police said Monday they had arrested 1,200 people at a vegetable warehouse in a Moscow suburb that targeted by the anti-migrant rioters on Sunday, reported RIA Novosti.

“One video clip of the weekend violence showed a group of protestors chanting Russian nationalist slogans and breaking into a shop, smashing glass and setting off smoke bombs.”

Russia’s Interior Minister has put the entire police force in Moscow  on alert to control mass unrest, the Kommersant newspaper reported. The response includes “Volcano 5 strategy,” which has been invoked for the first time since the 2010 deadly terrorist attacks on the Moscow metro, said the report.

Vietnam Evacuates 250,000 ahead of NARI

Typhoon NARI to impact Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand

Vietnamese government has begun evacuating about 250,000 people from the country’s central coastal areas in the projected path of Typhoon NARI.

The typhoon is making landfall in central Vietnam early Tuesday (UTC) with sustained winds of about 125km/hr.

The Philippines

NARI killed at least 26 people in Central Luzon, Philippines, over the weekend, with many more reported as missing, affecting tens of thousands of people in the region.

The typhoon left at least 60 towns submerged under floodwater in Aurora, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Zambales provinces, destroying or damaging scores of homes and tens of thousands of hectares of crops.

Typhoon NARI will impact Vietnam, China’s Hainan Province, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand in the next few days.

China

Heavy rains which began battering Hainan Province, the southern part of Guangdong Province and the southeastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region early Sunday are expected to intensify,  prompting Hainan province to issue a “red alert,” said a report.

• China starts emergency plans for Typhoon Nari

Cambodia

NARI is forecast to dump moderate-to-heavy rains on more than half of Cambodia’s 24 provinces, said the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology on Monday.

“The country has been hit by Mekong River [flooding] and flash floods in recent weeks. Nhim Vanda, vice-president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said Monday that in the last four weeks, floods have claimed at least 122 lives and affected some 1.5 million people,” said a report.

Additionally, floodwaters have submerged 250,000 hectares of rice paddies, and destroyed or damaged 110 km of national roads and more than 300 km of gravel roads, the report said.

Blizzard Kills 80,000 Cattle in S. Dakota

6,000 SD ranches lose 80,000 cattle to early-autumn blizzard

Some 6,000 ranching operations have suffered catastrophic losses from a statewide snowstorm in South Dakota, the country’s 6th largest state in livestock production, with nearly 4 million head of cattle.

Many parts of South Dakota reported record snowfall totals for the entire month of October over the weekend.

The massive snowstorm took ranchers by surprise hitting just days after 80-degree weather, and before they had a chance to move their herds from less-protected summer grazing lands, said a report.

“Thousands of head had been recently relocated here from Texas and New Mexico to escape punishing droughts in those states.”

Up to  20 percent of all cattle were killed in some parts of the state, said Silvia Christen, executive director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association.

“Some ranchers lost all their cattle. They’ve yet to find one alive… They’re facing absolute destruction,” she said.

Many ranchers worry that with the federal government shutdown, they’ll receive no compensation for their catastrophic losses.

“A lot of the government agencies that we would normally be turning to for those answers are furloughed. So there’s this sort of timing issue that’s enhancing the frustration out there in cattle country.” Jodie Anderson, executive director of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association said.

Die-off Double Whammy

“The most immediate concern is proper disposal of the dead livestock, which state law says must be burned, buried or rendered within 36 hours — for the health not only of surviving herds but also for people,” said a report.

“That can be a significant source of disease spread, so we want to make sure those carcasses are burned, buried or rendered as quickly as possible,” South Dakota’s state veterinarian, told reporters.

In addition to tens of thousands of calves being killed, thousands more cows that would have delivered calves next year also died in the blizzard, said South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, warning that the effects of catastrophe would be felt for many years to come.

“And the stress of the storm will leave its mark on surviving herds, the South Dakota State University Agricultural Extension Service said, leaving the remaining cattle vulnerable to ruinous diseases with names like infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine respiratory syncytial virus and bovine viral diarrhea virus.” The report said.

New Zealand “lit up like a Christmas tree”

5000 Lightning strikes in 2 hours, as powerful winds batter NZ capital, “worse is yet to come”

Hurricane-strength winds have downed trees, closed roads and cut power to thousands of New Zealand homes, forcing dozens of flight cancellation in the capital Wellington on Monday.

A local forecaster has warned “worse is yet to come” with ”the meat of the core of the strong winds” to hit Wellington between 2-8pm today.

Parts of the country were also being “lit up like a Christmas tree” by lightning strikes, said the forecaster, with 5000 strikes recorded between 10am and noon Monday.

“Most of those were west of the South Island’s main divide, although some were spilling over to the east,” said a report.

Millions left homeless amid apocalyptic destruction caused by typhoon PHAILIN

At least 235,000 mud-and-thatch homes have been destroyed in Ganjam district, Odisha state alone, the Indian red Cross reported.

The official death toll due to the typhoon stood at 15 people, according to authorities in Odisha state. Most of the victim were reportedly killed under falling trees.

Hindu temple stampede in Madhya Pradesh, India

Meantime, death toll from  climbed to 91 with more than 100 others injured in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, said reports.

“The death toll has risen to 91 and 10 others are in a critical condition,” Deputy Inspector General of Police D.K. Arya told reporters.
