Japan Disaster PM Declares Izu Oshima Island “Severe Disaster Area”

Once again Japanese authorities stand accused of “criminal negligence” for failing to save lives

Japan’s disaster Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited typhoon-hit volcanic island of Izu Oshima on Sunday and declared the devastation caused by the Typhoon WIPHA as a “disaster of extreme severity.”

Just about everyone and their uncle knew typhoon WIPHA was a very intense storm capable of causing major damage, possibly multiple deaths.

Even Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) had earlier warned about the severity of the typhoon, which failed to make a direct hit, describing it as a “once a decade” type of storm.

The storm triggered deadly mudslides on the island destroying homes and burying residents alive on October 16. At least 32 people were killed and about a dozen were missing, presumed dead.

Once again the authorities in Japan have been accused of “criminal negligence” for failing to issue adequate warnings and evacuation alerts as the deadly storm approached, which would have saved dozens of lives.

Deadly Storm Prompts State of Emergency in Russia

St. Jude Hits Northwest Russia, State of emergency Declared in Pskov 

The deadly storm reached northwestern Russia on Tuesday after wreaking havoc in several other countries in northern and northwestern Europe since early Monday, disrupting transport, power and communication lines in three northwestern Russian regions and prompting a state of emergency declaration in Pskov, said a report quoting sources from local weather agency.

Tens of thousands of people in Pskov and St. Petersburg were left without power, as the storm barreled through the region.

The storm knocked out power to about 100,000 households in Estonia and Latvia, which border Pskov Oblast.

St Jude left at least 15 people dead including seven in Germany, four in Britain, two in the Netherlands and one each in France and Denmark and knocked out power to about a million homes and business across northwestern Europe, including 750,000 customers in Britain.

Kansas Declared Federal Disaster Area

Severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding prompt Major Disaster Declaration for the State of Kansas

The State of Kansas has been declared a major disaster area by the White House due to severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding during the period of July 22 to August 16, 2013.

Severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding have devastated nearly a half of the states 105 counties including Barber, Barton, Bourbon, Butler, Chase, Cherokee, Clark, Clay, Cloud, Coffey, Comanche, Cowley, Crawford, Dickinson, Edwards, Elk, Ellsworth, Ford, Geary, Greenwood, Hamilton, Harper, Harvey, Hodgeman, Kingman, Kiowa, Lane, Linn, Lyon, Marion, McPherson, Meade, Montgomery, Morris, Ness, Ottawa, Pawnee, Pratt, Reno, Republic, Rice, Saline, Sumner, Washington, Wilson, and Woodson, said the White House in a statement.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said FEMA.

 

Major Disaster Declared in New Mexico

New Mexico Declared Federal Disaster Area due to Severe Storms, Flooding and Mudslides

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of New Mexico due to major losses and damage caused by severe storms, flooding, and mudslides during the period of September 9-22, 2013.

The worst affected areas are the counties of Catron, Chaves, Cibola, Colfax, Eddy, Guadalupe, Los Alamos, McKinley, Mora, Sandoval, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, and Torrance.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said FEMA.

October 2 Disaster Declaration for NM

On October 2, 2013, WH signed a separate Major Disaster declaration for NM due to severe storms and flooding  which occurred July 23-28, 2013.

The worst of the losses and damages caused by severe storms and flooding occurred in the counties of Bernalillo, Colfax, Luna, Sandoval, and Socorro and the Cochiti, Kewa (Santa Domingo), San Felipe, and Sandia Pueblos.

2nd Major Disaster Declaration for the Santa Clara Pueblo

A separate Federal Disaster Declaration was signed last week for Santa Clara Pueblo to supplement the Tribe’s efforts in the area affected by severe storms and flooding during the period of September 13-16, 2013.

On September 27, 2013 the Santa Clara Pueblo (Indian Reservation) was declared a Federal Disaster Area due to losses and damages caused by severe storms and flooding during the period of July 19-21, 2013.
