M5.1 quake occurs at northern rim of  Bardarbunga caldera: IMO

Centered at 64.675°N, 17.415°W, about 6.6km NE of Bardarbunga, the quake occurred at a depth of 5.2 km [USGS/EHP: 64.723°N 17.390°W depth=7.5km] on Sunday at 12:01:45GMT, said Iceland Met Office (IMO).

The quake was the largest to strike Bardarbunga volcanic system since a magnitude 5.4 shock on Saturday.

Meantime, a large fissure eruption continues in Holuhraun lava field, north of Vatnajokull [Glacier of Lakes.]

“A lava eruption started in Holuhraun shortly after 04 AM, on the same volcanic fissure, which erupted earlier this week. The fissure is estimated to be 1.5 km long.”

The lava extruding from the fissure was estimated at 1 km wide, 3 km long and several meters deep, oozing down in a northeasterly direction. The flow rate was about 1,000 m³ per second, said IMO.

The Aviation Color Code for Bárðarbunga has been downgraded from “red” to “orange” [because no ash has been detected] and the alert level for Askja to “yellow,” said IMO.

New fissure eruption near Bardarbunga prompts ‘Red Alert’

Iceland has once again raised its aviation warning to the highest level after a new fissure eruption in Holuhraun lava field near Bardarbunga volcano.

Volcanologists monitoring restive Bardarbunga observed a fissure eruption at 05:15GMT on Sunday, said IMO.

“It appears that the eruptive fissure is longer than in the last eruption. It is extending north and south on the same . The eruption is a very calm lava eruption and can hardly be seen on seismometers. Visual observation confirm it is calm, but continuous.”

Currently, only lava is erupting, but no ash has been observed, added IMO.

The eruption prompted IMO to raise the aviation warning code to ‘red’ for the large area that houses the Bardarbunga volcanic system.

The new fissure is located very close to the Friday’s, with the fracture extending further to the north, said a researcher.

The latest eruption is said to be far more more intense than Friday’s, with the lava flow estimated to be more than 10 times greater.

Meantime, seismicity continues on a 15-km-long region of the dyke intrusion, said IMO, “extending both into the Dyngjujökull glacier and the region north of the ice margin. Earthquakes have not migrated northwards during the last two days.”

An estimated 500 million cubic meters of lava has flowed from beneath the volcano in a long dyke since last week.

Another Significant Quake Strikes Iceland’s Bardarbunga Volcano

Centered at 64.844°N, 16.858°W [about 18.0km ENE of Kistufell] the quake struck at a depth of 5.4km on Saturday, said IMO.

The shock occurred beneath Bardarbunga’s main volcano at 07:03 GMT, said IMO, adding that they had not observed any new eruptions.

Drought Destroys Crops in N China

Recent drought in northern China has destroyed crops in much of northern China, leaving scores of people without food or drinking water, according to authorities, said Xinhua, China’s official news agency.

The regions include the provinces of Liaoning, Henan, Jilin, Hebei and Hubei as well as Inner Mongolia and Ningxia Hui autonomous regions, said the report, citing the country’s Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Liaoning province has experienced its worst drought since 1951, with about half million hectares of crops destroyed. The grain production in the province is expected to decline by 5 billion kg this year, said the report.

Severe Drought in Hebei

“Lingering droughts have spread to most parts of Hebei, a major grain-producing region in China, affecting 1.25 million hectares of crops, said the provincial water resources department.”

Large numbers of livestock are also short of water. Average precipitation in the province through mid-August was 21 mm, about 50 percent less than the average for the period, said the report.

Record Drought Kills Scores of Livestock in Xinjiang

“A prolonged drought in northwest China’s Xinjiang has left about 200,000 people in need of emergency aid, including drinking water, said the region’s civil affairs department.” Xinhua reported.

“In seven counties of the Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of Ili in northern Xinjiang, more than half a million people and 3.46 million head of livestock have been affected. Some 7,700 cattle have died.”

“Herders are concerned how their livestock will survive the winter due to the destruction of fodder by the drought. Over 4.3 million mu (287,000 hectares) of crops and 22.8 million mu of pastures have suffered, with direct economic losses of 4.3 billion yuan (700 million U.S. dollars).”

Nationally, the drought has affected about 3 million hectares of crops.

“Artificial rain has failed to relieve the situation.”

Fissure eruption reported in Holuhraun lava field, Dyngjujokull glacier, Iceland

The eruption breached surface in Holuhraun lava field about 5km north of Dyngjujokull about 00:02 GMT on Friday, said IMO.

Seismic activity has decreased as a result of the pressure release, however a significant amount of earthquakes is still detected in the magma dike, between the eruption site and south to about 5 km into Dyngjujökull.

The aviation color-code was raised to “red” and back to “orange,” as there was no ash emission.

A significant shock measuring 5.2Mw centered at 64.770°N, 17.335°W occurred at a depth of 7.5km at 12:21UTC, said USGS/EHP.

Tavurvur Volcano Erupts in Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Mount Tavurvur on PNG’s East New Britain Island erupted violently at 3.00 a.m. local time,  said Rabaul Volcanological Observatory.

It ejected plumes of smoke and ash to a height of about 17,000m over the South Pacific island country, forcing the authorities to warn local residents to stay indoors, and causing airlines to alter some flight paths.

“Flight paths between Sydney and Narita (Tokyo) and Sydney and Shanghai have been altered as a result of the volcanic ash cloud over Rabaul in eastern Papua New Guinea,” Qantas spokeswoman told Reuters.

The eruption reached the top of the atmosphere at 50,000 feet, which is the same height as which planes travel, could disrupt air flights from Australia, said the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Darwin, Australia.

M5.6 Quake Strikes South of Athens, Greece

Centered at 36.738°N, 23.757°E, about 137km south of Athens, the quake struck at a depth of 91.8km, said USGS/EHP.

The quake was felt in Athens; however, there were no reports of casualties or severe damage, as of posting.

More than 1.25 million people affected by flooding in the state of Assam alone

Extreme rain events continue to flood rivers in the NE Indian state of Assam including the massive Brahmaputra and its tributaries, which have risen above danger level, said officials.

Floodwaters have inundated more than 2,000 villages in 16 districts across the state, killing scores of people, affecting more than 1.25 million, and leaving about 200,000 homeless.

Severe floods have also affected the states of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha.

Crop Disaster Declared for 7 Additional Texas Counties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of seven counties in the Lone Star  State as crop disaster areas due to severe drought.

The crop disaster designations are for  El Paso, Kleberg, Brooks, Hudspeth, Jim Wells, Kenedy and Nueces counties.

Crop Disasters 2014

Beginning January 10, 2014 USDA has declared at least 2,262  separate crop disasters across 33 states. Most of those designations are due to the drought.

Those states are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina Texas, Utah and Washington, Wyoming. i. USDA trigger point for a countywide disaster declaration is 30 percent crop loss on at least one crop.

Bardarbunga volcano hit by two more significant earthquakes

Two more earthquakes measuring magnitudes 5.4 and 5.2 struck near Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano on Wednesday. The quakes struck at depths of 6.4 and 6.2km respectively.
A magnitude 4.5 quake also struck the nearby Askja volcano at a depth of 4km, said IMO.

Dozens of Aftershocks Hit Napa County

More than a 100 aftershocks of all magnitudes have struck southern Napa County following a 6.0Mw quake that struck on August 24, causing an estimated $1billion in damages and injuring about 200 people.

Centered at 38.182°N, 122.302°W the largest aftershock  so far measured 3.9Mw striking at a depth of 11.7km (7.3mi), said USGS/EHP.

Another cluster of of more than 200 shocks has occurred near Geysers, California.

Floodwaters threaten densely populated Bangladesh capital, Dhaka

Extreme Rain Events have triggered severe flooding across Bangladesh, destroying homes, public infrastructure and croplands.

Up to a million people have already fled their homes, as floodwaters threaten the densely populated capital, Dhaka.

“Over the next couple of days the flood situation around Dhaka [could] further deteriorate,” warned an official at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center.

“The main rivers continue to flow above danger levels due to heavy rainfall upstream in India. We expect the situation to worsen in the next 72 hours.”

Flooding has destroyed large swathes of croplands in dozens of districts, killing scores of livestock.

“I’ve lost my home and my rice,” said a farmer in the northern district of Rangpur. “My two cows are also missing. I don’t know how I’ll survive the year.”

M6.0 Quake Occurs  NW of American Canyon, California

Centered at 38.214°N, 122.319°W the quake struck at a significant depth of 10.8km.

There were no reports of casualties, as of posting. However, according to the USGS ‘Pager‘ and ‘Shakemap,‘ some fatalities may have occurred, with the damage estimated at hundreds of million of dollars.

The quake has severely damaged “historic buildings in Downtown Napa, rupturing gas lines and water mains across Napa, Sonoma, and Solano Counties leading to multiple fires, plunging entire communities into darkness and buckling and cracking roadways on Highway 37 and State Route 121,” said a local report.

Bardarbunga erupting subglacially

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) has issued a red alert for aviation, warning that Bardarbunga volcano could spew significant ash emissions.

A small sub-glacial eruption is currently occurring at Bardarbunga, said the Met Office.

“Warning: It is believed that a small subglacial lava-eruption has begun under the Dyngjujökull glacier. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been changed from orange to red.”

The red alert is Iceland’s highest warning level on their five-point scale.

On Wednesday, authorities evacuated hundreds of people from several areas  north of the volcano, fearing that the volcano could erupt and cause significant flooding and mudslides.

Bardarbunga, a part of a large volcanic system,  sits under up to 400 meters of ice, the Vatnajokull glacier, in central Iceland.

• At 14:04UTC, an earthquake measuring 4.5Mw occurred near the volcano.

Bardarbunga (Bárðarbunga Icelandic spelling), is a stratovolcano, located under the Vatnajökull glacier. It is the second highest mountain in Iceland, standing 2,010 meters a.s.l. The volcanic system that includes Bardarbunga is more than 200km long and 25km wide.

Vatnajökull (Glacier of Lakes), also known as the Vatna Glacier, is Iceland’s largest and most voluminous glacier, located in the south-east of the island. With an area of 13,600 km², Vatnajökull covers more than 8 percent of the country. It is also the largest ice cap in Europe by volume (3,100 km³).

Two-thirds of Brits surveyed wanted to eat healthy food, but couldn’t afford it 

The number of Brits admitted to hospitals for malnutrition has increased by staggering 19% since last year, according to a new report released by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH).

FPH blames the disaster on a combination of a 12% rise UK food prices and a  7.6% decline in wages since 2007.

“It’s getting worse because people can’t afford good quality food. It’s getting worse where malnutrition, rickets and other manifestations of extreme poor diet are becoming apparent.” FPH told the BBC.

Health problems like rickets are becoming more apparent because people could not afford quality food in their diet, said FPH.

[NOTE: FPH is the standard-setting entity for specialists in public health in the United Kingdom. It includes more than 3,300 professionals working in public health. ]

Meantime, a survey of about 2,500 adults conducted by the British Heart Foundation in April found two thirds of UK adults wanted to eat healthy but could not afford healthy food.

About a million Brits rely on food banks, a massive rise of 163% since last year.

According to the Health and Social Information Center the number of patients admitted to hospitals under malnutrition in England and Wales has climbed from 5,469 to 6,520 since last year.

‘Absolute Poverty’

At least a million more working Britons have plunged into poverty as housing costs continue soaring, while wages remain stagnant, according to a UK government report released earlier this year.

The number of working age adults living in “absolute poverty” soared by at least one million, from 7.7 million in 2010-11 to 8.7 million in 2012-13, says a report published by the Department for Work and Pensions.

Meanwhile, the number of children living below the breadline rose from 3.6 million to 4.1 million during the two-year period, said the Child Poverty Action group, citing the Department of Work and Pensions’ report.

Shoplifting ‘Rising Exponentially’

Some people are resorting to shoplifting “simply to live.” Durham Police and Crime Commissioner told BBC.

“The evidence shows that shoplifting and theft in general is rising exponentially and there must be a reason for that,” he said, adding that it was important to address the causes of such crimes.

Mass Evacuations in E. China as Floods Affect Half Million People

At least half a million people have been affected by extreme rain events and severe flooding across four cities in east China’s Zhejiang Province since August 8, with about 65,000 people displaced, according to China’s official news agency, Xinhua.

“Statistics from the provincial hydrological bureau showed that the province’s average precipitation has reached 204 millimeters over the past fortnight, the highest since 1951 excluding the influence of typhoons.”

Up to a thousand houses have collapsed, and 26,100 hectares of croplands have been damaged, of which 1,400 hectares were completely destroyed, said the report.

“The torrential rains also forced 255 factories and mines to stop their production, destroyed 193 roads, 21 power supply lines, 33 sluices, 72 small reservoirs, 444 irrigation facilities and 13 hydropower stations.”

Drought causes severe water shortages in NE China

Meantime, a severe drought in NE China has left about a third of a million people without drinking water.

Drought in northeast China’s Liaoning Province has left about 330,000 people and 82,000 head of livestock without water, said authorities, Xinhua reported.

“The worst drought since 1951 has also affected 28 million mu (1.8 million hectares) of crops, 56 reservoirs and 427 rivers, said the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.”

Liaoning has received less than 40 percent of its average rainfall between  July 1 and August 17, and the dry, hot weather is forecast to continue, said the report.

“Artificial rain has failed to relieve the situation.”

Crop Disaster Declared for 9 Counties in Washington

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of nine counties in Washington state as crop disaster areas due to severe drought.

The crop disaster designations are for Yakima, Benton, King, Klickitat, Pierce, Grant, Kittitas, Lewis and Skamania counties.

Beginning January 10, 2014 USDA has declared at least 2,255 separate crop disasters across 33 states. Most of those designations are due to the drought.

Those states are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina Texas, Utah and Washington, Wyoming. Thousands of tremors recorded near Bárðarbunga volcano

Seismic activity continues around the Bárðarbunga volcano in the northwestern part of Vatnajökull glacier, with about 5,000 tremors recorded since Saturday. The largest quake so far measured 3.0Mw, officials said.

The seismicity is said to be the most intense ever recorded in the area. Most of the quakes are occurring at depths of 5 – 10km, said the Iceland Met Office.

Fearing a major eruption, authorities have evacuated an area north of the volcano, where severe flooding could occur as a result of the ice cap of the Vatnajökull glacier melting.

Dozens killed in Hiroshima landslides

An extreme rain event, said to be the equivalent of a month’s worth of rain, unleashed severe flooding and landslides killing at least 40 people in the outskirts of the Hiroshima in western Japan. About a dozen others are reported missing, and the death toll is expected to rise, police said.

A record 217mm of rain fell in just 3 hours in the northern part of the city, more than the average for the entire month of August, the local media reported.

The city’s fire department have reportedly admitted to their own incompetence for the large number of casualties: “Something went wrong in our analysis (of the emergency) … We failed to issue an evacuation advisory ahead of the disaster. Looking back, … this is something we need to amend.”

“In 1999, Hiroshima City and nearby Kure City were hit by similar landslides which killed more than 30 people,” said a report.

Meantime, flooding and mudslides have destroyed or damaged more than 2,100 homes and other buildings in Fukuchiyama City in Kyoto Prefecture, and Tanba City in neighboring Hyogo Prefecture in the Kansai region west of Honshu island.

About two dozen wildfires burning across California, Oregon and Washington state amid rising temperatures and worsening drought. Authorities say this is one of the worst wildfire seasons on record.

Thousands of gallons of oil spills from Duke Energy coal plant into Ohio River

At least 5,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled into Ohio River from a 60-year-old power plant owned by Duke Energy near Cincinnati, said the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Ohio River stretches more than 1,500km from Pennsylvania to Illinois and provides drinking water for at least 3 million people, said the Ohio River Foundation (ORF).

It is also a major artery for shipping agricultural produce by barge from the eastern United States to export terminals on the Gulf Coast.

The Ohio River is now the worst toxic water dump in the U.S., said ORF.

• Polluters dumped 31 million pounds of toxic chemicals into Ohio River in 2007, making it the most toxic river in the U.S.
• Violations of the Clean Water Act are going unprosecuted.
• About half of lakes and reservoirs are contaminated above EPA “safe levels,” said ORF.

July Complex Fire

A storm moved across Siskiyou County on July 29, 2014 with little moisture and a significant amount of lightning—with over 955 down strikes recorded. As of August 1st, the lightning had resulted in at least 26 lightning caused fires on the Happy Camp/Oak Knoll, Salmon/Scott Ranger District, and Goosenest Ranger District.

These fires are now being managed as the July Complex; the Whites fire, Log fire, Leef fire, and Ray’s fire.

The July Complex now includes the Man Fire in the Marble Mountain Wilderness near Man Eaten Lake, about 14 miles northwest of Etna. This fire was caused by lightning on August 12 and is estimated at 180 acres.

The following Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office evacuation order and advisories are in effect: Evacuation Orders Residents should leave immediately. · Evacuation orders are in place for the community of Sawyers Bar and the Eddy Gulch, Little North Fork, Idlewild, Mule Bridge, Robinson Flat and Whites Gulch areas. Once a person leaves, they may not be able to re-enter the evacuation area until the fire danger has passed. Exit via Sawyers Bar Road to Forks of the Salmon and then take Salmon River Road to Highway 96.

Evacuation Advisories Residents should be prepared to evacuate if fire conditions worsen.

• An advisory is in place for the communities of Quartz Valley, Mugginsville, Greenview and South Kidder Creek.
• An advisory is in place for the Scott Valley communities of French Creek and Sugar Creek.
• An advisory is in place for the residents of Black Bear Ranch, Godfrey Ranch and Blue Ridge Ranch.

Vomitoxin Levels Rising in U.S. Wheat

Vomitoxin levels rise in wheat samples  across nine U.S. states

Fusarium head blight of wheat (FHB), also known as ‘head scab,’ is caused mainly by the fungus Gibberella zeae (aka Fusarium graminearum). The disease has previously caused significant yield loss and reduced grain quality in the U.S. costing the industry about $3 billion from 1998 to 2000, and more than $4.5 billion in 2011. Gibberella zeae also produces mycotoxins—chemicals that are toxic to humans and livestock.

The fungus has plagued the  soft red winter (SRW) wheat, which develops when it rains during the crop’s key growing stages.

As little as two or three days of light to moderate rainfall can favor infection. Optimum temperatures for infection are between 75°F and 85°F, but during prolonged periods of high humidity and moisture, infection will occur at lower temperatures. The initial infection on the wheat head may produce additional spores that can infect other wheat heads. This secondary infection can be especially problematic in uneven wheat stands with late flowering tillers.

Infection will continue as long as weather conditions are favorable and wheat plants are at susceptible growth stages.

SRW is grown in a large eastern section of the United States, in the south from Louisiana and Arkansas across to the Carolinas and in the north from Missouri across the Midwest to Pennsylvania and Maryland, accounting for a fifth of the U.S. total wheat crop in the last five years, said a report.

A preliminary survey conducted by the U.S. Wheat Associates showed composite vomitoxin level from more than 500 samples across nine states were about twice the five-year average of 1.3 ppm, said the report.

“We’re seeing about 10 ppm and I don’t know that we have seen that before. The elevators are not sure what they’re going to do with that wheat,” said a grain merchant at a milling company based in Illinois.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits vomitoxin levels in finished products such as flour to 1 ppm.

“It is in a lot of the wheat, areas east of the Mississippi River would be the most suspect, all along the U.S. Gulf and through the Eastern Seaboard. There were even high levels coming out of Pennsylvania,” said a livestock nutritionist at a feed company based in Kentucky.

Risk of Mycotoxins

Gibberella zeae produces the mycotoxin, deoxynivalenol (DON), also known as vomitoxin.

DON is an extremely stable mycotoxin and drying and storing grain will
not reduce DON levels in harvested grain.

The fungus may also produce another mycotoxin, zearalenone, however this mycotoxin is not as common in wheat as DON. Zearalenone has estrogenic properties, which means it can cause infertility, abortion, or other breeding problems. As little as 1 to 5 ppm zearalenone ina feed ration may produce an estrogenic effect in swine.

Residents in the St. Louis suburb have been protesting police brutality after an unarmed black teen was fatally shot by a white police officer.

A preliminary private autopsy found Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, reported The New York Times.

Meantime, Nixon ordered the National Guard to the city, saying they would help “in restoring peace and order” to Ferguson.

Police claimed that protesters had hurled Molotov cocktails at them. And at least two people were shot by “civilians.”

Nixon had declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew for the city.

“We must first have and maintain peace. This is a test. The eyes of the world are watching,” Nixon said. “We cannot allow the ill will of the few to undermine the good will of the many.”

“This is not to silence the people of Ferguson, of this region or others, but to contain those who are drowning out the voice of the people with their actions,” Nixon said. Brown was shot to death last Saturday afternoon.

 Centered at 32.739°N, 47.670°E the quake occurred at a depth of about 10.0km (6.2mi), said USGS/EHP.

The mainshock was preceded by a M5.0 foreshock, and followed by at least 8 significant aftershocks, the largest of which measured 5.8Mw as of posting.

The quakes struck western Iran, near the border with Iraq. Induced seismicity cannot be ruled out.

The quake has injured hundreds of people and caused extensive damage to buildings in the nearby town of Mour-Mouri, said news agencies quoting local media.

Deadly floods bury hundreds of villages in north India

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe flooding submerging 500 villages in northern India, killing scores of people and leaving thousands homeless, officials said.

The extreme rain events have also caused numerous landslides across the country. In  neighboring Nepal hundreds are dead or unaccounted for as a result of flooding.

“Nearly 500 villages in Bahraich, Shrawasti, and Lakhimpur Kheri are hit, mostly by a swollen Rapti, with Ghaghara, another perennial trans-boundary river originating on the Tibetan plateau near Lake Mansarovar, flowing above the danger mark in Barabanki, Siddharth Nagar and Faizabad,” said Times of India.

“In Bahraich, around 470 villages of Balha, Mihipurwa and Shivpu blocks are submerged under water following damage to the Saryu canal. District administration feared several hundred people might have got swept away in the flood…”

Forecasters say more rain could exacerbate the flooding in Uttar Pradesh,  India’s most populous state, and Uttarakhand in the Himalayas, Reuters reported chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh as saying.

“With the floods wreaking havoc in Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Gonda districts in Uttar Pradesh, a population of about four lakh [400,000 people] in the marooned villages has been cut off from the mainland. As the major rivers, Ghagra, Sharda, Rapti and their tributaries are in spate, more villages in these districts are likely to be affected,” said a local report.

Flood waters have caused enormous damage to crops, destroying thousands of kachcha houses and killing thousands of cattle across the region.

There are fears that flooding could also severely damage the country’s sugarcane crops. India is world’s second-largest sugar producer.

Dozens killed, Many Missing in Nepal Floods and Landslides

At least 53 people have been killed and many more are reported missing in Nepal due to extreme monsoon rains that triggered flash floods and mudslides since Wednesday, officials said.

More than 25 percent of Nepal’s 75 administrative districts have been hit by floods or landslides.

“More than 200 houses are destroyed while hundreds of other homes are completely under water,” officials said, adding that thousands of people had been rescued.

“Early this month, a massive landslide near Kathmandu buried a village and killed 156 people. It blocked the Sunkoshi River forming a dangerous build up of water prompting authorities in Bihar in east India to evacuate thousands on flood fears,” said a report.

Tennessee Declared Federal Disaster Area

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Tennessee in the areas affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding during the period of June 5-10, 2014.

Most of the damage caused by the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding has occurred in the counties of Anderson, Bledsoe, Carroll, Decatur, Henry, Hickman, Houston, Lawrence, Lewis, Madison, Marion, Maury, McNairy, Moore, Perry, Roane, Sequatchie, and Tipton.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said FEMA.
