Severe Flooding in Gaza: UN Declares State of Emergency

A two-day Extreme Rain Event triggered severe flooding in Gaza, forcing hundreds of residents to flee the ruins of their homes, and prompting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to declare a State of  Emergency across the war-devastated coastal enclave.

“We are very concerned about such severe storms this early in the season and on the back of unprecedented damage and destruction caused by the recent conflict,” said the UN’s Director of Operations for UNRWA in Gaza.

“We are particularly concerned for those families still seeking adequate shelter and preparing for the winter months, and for the impact the flooding is already having on children unable to attend school.”

“Gaza City is one of five areas in the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave where UNRWA serves some 1.3 million Palestine refugees across all Areas,” said the UN agency in a statement.

“As a precautionary measure, 63 schools in Gaza City are closed today for the afternoon shift, affecting almost 65,000 students. Forty-three schools in the North Area of the Strip are also now closed.”

“In December 2013, the fiercest winter storm the region has seen for many years, Alexa, hit the Strip, and brought torrential rains and widespread flooding that displaced thousands. Such devastation exacerbates the already poor humanitarian situation for refugees and non-refugees in Gaza, which is dealing with the aftermath of a recent conflict, and an acute fuel and energy crisis.”

The latest episode of War on Gaza, which lasted 50 days, and ended in late August, killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, said the UN.  A small number of Israeli soldiers and ‘civilians’ in Israel were also killed.

Lava threatens to bury town on the island of Fogo

Lava is moving close to the village of Portela, near the community of Cha das Caldeiras, situated within the crater of the Pico do Fogo on the island of Fogo [means ‘fire’ in Portuguese,] where more than 1,200 people have been evacuated.

A local vulcanologist reportedly told state-owned Radio Cape Verde the first explosion that occurred on Sunday was “much greater than the one in 1995,” which deposited a layer of ash across the island.

“The eruption was very powerful, but we are appealing to the people to stay calm,” a government minister said.

The eruption was a level 3 on the 9-level volcanic explosivity index, the minister said.

Fogo is one of nine inhabited islands comprising Cape Verde in West Africa.

The Virginia Company & The Myth of Thanksgiving

Posted by feww on November 27, 2014

Quot of the Day:

“Thanksgiving: an insidious smoke screen”

The US origin story of a covenant with God goes back to the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document of the Plymouth Colony. It is named for the ship that carried the hundred or so passengers, half of them religious dissidents, to what is now Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in November 1620. This compact marked the beginning of settler democracy, which from its inception sought the elimination of the Indigenous. Behind the black clothed and solemn “Pilgrims,” was a corporation of shareholders, the Virginia Company, accompanied by armed and seasoned mercenaries on a colonizing project ordered by the English King James. If any local Natives were present at a colonizers’ celebratory meal, they were surely there as servants, and the foods were confiscated, not offered as a gift. — Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

Deadly Plague Outbreak Kills Dozens in Madagascar: WHO

“There is now a risk of a rapid spread of the disease due to the city’s high population density and the weakness of the healthcare system. The situation is further complicated by the high level of resistance to deltamethrin (an insecticide used to control fleas) that has been observed in the country,” said the World Health Organization (WHO).

Plague – Madagascar

On 4 November 2014, WHO was notified by the Ministry of Health of Madagascar of an outbreak of plague. The first case, a male from Soamahatamana village in the district of Tsiroanomandidy, was identified on 31 August. The patient died on 3 September.

As of 16 November, a total of 119 cases of plague have been confirmed, including 40 deaths. Only 2% of reported cases are of the pneumonic form.

Some 16 districts in seven regions throughout the rat-infested island country have so far reported cases of plague infection. “Antananarivo, the capital and largest city in Madagascar, has also been affected with 2 recorded cases of plague, including 1 death,” said a report by WHO.

Background

Plague is a bacterial disease caused by Yersinia pestis, which primarily affects wild rodents. It is spread from one rodent to another by fleas. Humans bitten by an infected flea usually develop a bubonic form of plague, which produces the characteristic plague bubo (a swelling of the lymph node). If the bacteria reach the lungs, the patient develops pneumonia (pneumonic plague), which is then transmissible from person to person through infected droplets spread by coughing. If diagnosed early, bubonic plague can be successfully treated with antibiotics. Pneumonic plague, on the other hand, is one of the most deadly infectious diseases; patients can die 24 hours after infection. The mortality rate depends on how soon treatment is started, but is always very high. [Source: WHO]

NY Declares State of Emergency Amid Deadly Snowstorm

All 50 U.S. states experience freezing temperatures or colder weather as a polar vortex pushes arctic air across the country.

Every U.S. state, including Hawaii, saw temperatures plunge to freezing point or lower on Tuesday, said the National Weather Service (NWS).

State of Emergency Declared in New York

The arctic blast also prompted NY governor to declare a state of emergency in western and central New York due to heavy snow.

The counties included in the executive order are Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Franklin, Genesee, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Wyoming, and contiguous counties.

“This storm may persist until Friday morning with the potential for another two feet of snow,” said Cuomo, dispatching the National Guard. “New Yorkers in these areas should exercise extreme caution, and stay off the roads until conditions are clearer and safer.”

Up to 1.2 meters of snow is forecast for large swathes of western New York, while several areas could receive as much as 1.8 meters, said NWS.

Deadly Snowstorm

“Four people have died as a result of the snowstorm. Three of them succumbed, apparently from heart problems, two of them while shoveling the deep snow. Another was killed while attempting to push a car out of a drift,” said a report.

Surreal Storm

A New York highway superintendent called the snowstorm “surreal.”

“I’ve been here 33 years and this is one of the top ones,” he told The Buffalo News. “It’s surreal … this is one of the worst I’ve seen.”

Historic Event
“This will be a historic event. Absolutely. It is a historic event,” said a forecaster with NWS.

Infectious Diseases kill 1,448 Chinese, sicken more than 608,000 in October

[Reported cases of] infectious diseases in mainland China killed  at least 1,448 people and sickened more than 609,000 people in October, Xinhua quoted the health officials as saying.

Plague, a Category A infectious disease, killed at least two people, said the report.

Infectious diseases in Category B were responsible for the bulk of the fatalities (1,421 cases reported), with Hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, dengue and diarrhea being the deadliest.

Category C infectious diseases killed 25 people in October, said China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) classifies the Emerging Infectious Diseases in categories A, B and C as follows:

Category A pathogens are those organisms/biological agents that pose the highest risk to national security and public health because they

  • Can be easily disseminated or transmitted from person to person
  • Result in high mortality rates and have the potential for major public health impact
  • Might cause public panic and social disruption
  • Require special action for public health preparedness

Category A Priority Pathogens

Category B pathogens are the second highest priority organisms/biological agents. They

  • Are moderately easy to disseminate
  • Result in moderate morbidity rates and low mortality rates
  • Require specific enhancements for diagnostic capacity and enhanced disease surveillance

Category B Priority Pathogens

  • Burkholderia pseudomallei (melioidosis)
  • Coxiella burnetii (Q fever)
  • Brucella species (brucellosis)
  • Burkholderia mallei (glanders)
  • Chlamydia psittaci (Psittacosis)
  • Ricin toxin (Ricinus communis)
  • Epsilon toxin (Clostridium perfringens)
  • Staphylococcus enterotoxin B (SEB)
  • Typhus fever (Rickettsia prowazekii)
  • Food- and waterborne pathogens
  • Mosquito-borne encephalitis viruses
    • West Nile virus (WNV)
    • LaCrosse encephalitis (LACV)
    • California encephalitis
    • Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE)
    • Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE)
    • Western equine encephalitis (WEE)
    • Japanese encephalitis virus (JE)
    • St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV)

Category C pathogens are the third highest priority and include emerging pathogens that could be engineered for mass dissemination in the future because of

  • Availability
  • Ease of production and dissemination
  • Potential for high morbidity and mortality rates and major health impact

Category C Priority Pathogens

  • Nipah and Hendra viruses
  • Additional hantaviruses
  • Tickborne hemorrhagic fever viruses
    • Bunyaviruses
      • Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome virus (SFTSV), Heartland virus
    • Flaviruses
      • Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever virus, Alkhurma virus, Kyasanur Forest virus
  • Tickborne encephalitis complex flaviviruses
    • Tickborne encephalitis viruses
    • European subtype
    • Far Eastern subtype
    • Siberian subtype
    • Powassan/Deer Tick virus
  • Yellow fever virus
  • Tuberculosis, including drug-resistant TB
  • Influenza virus
  • Other Rickettsias
  • Rabies virus
  • Prions
  • Chikungunya virus
  • Coccidioides spp.
  • Severe acute respiratory syndrome associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV), MERS-CoV, and other highly pathogenic human coronaviruses (new in FY14)
  • Antimicrobial resistance, excluding research on sexually transmitted organisms*
    • Research on mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance
    • Studies of the emergence and/or spread of antimicrobial resistance genes within pathogen populations
    • Studies of the emergence and/or spread of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens in human populations
    • Research on therapeutic approaches that target resistance mechanisms
    • Modification of existing antimicrobials to overcome emergent resistance
  • Antimicrobial research, as related to engineered threats and naturally occurring drug-resistant pathogens, focused on development of broad-spectrum antimicrobials

*NIAID Category C Antimicrobial Resistance—Sexually Transmitted Organisms Excluded

  • Bacterial vaginosis, Chlamydia trachomatis, cytomegalovirus, Granuloma inguinale, Hemophilus ducreyi, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus, human immunodeficiency virus, human papillomavirus, Neisseria gonorrhea, Treponema pallidum, Trichomonas vaginalis

Zoonotic H5N8 bird flu strain highly contagious: Dutch gov

The Dutch government has warned the highly contagions strain, H5N8, could be transmitted from poultry to humans, and have imposed a three-day nationwide ban on the transportation of poultry and eggs.

Authorities are destroying more than 150,000 birds at the infected farm, in the village of Hekendorp, and  have set up a 10-km (six-mile) exclusion zone, said local reports.

Some 700 Dutch poultry farms export more than 6 billion eggs each year.

H5N8 cases have also been reported in China, Germany, Japan and the UK, so far this year.

The deadly H5N1 strain has a mortality rate of about 60% in humans, killing about 400 people over the past ten years.

FIRE-EARTH Models estimate that more than 500 million birds have been destroyed over the past 10 years to prevent the spread of various avian flu strains.
