Major air and sea traffic disruptions as hurricane-force winds batter N. Europe
Hurricane-force westerly winds, with gusts of up to 120 km/h sweeping in from the North Sea, disrupted air, land and marine traffic throughout the Netherlands, prompting the Dutch meteorological office (KNMI) to issue a “code red” warning for the country’s coastal provinces.
Some ferry services and scores of flights to and from Schiphol airport were cancelled, local media reported.
The flight cancellations were the second in three days, following a major power outage at Schiphol Airport on March 27, which also led to air traffic chaos.
Authorities also closed two container terminals at the port of Rotterdam, forcing ships to queue out at sea.
