Hundreds Killed as Massive Tsunami Waves Drown Indonesia’s Palu Beach Following Powerful EQ

About 1,000 people dead or missing following major tsunami that hit Palu beach, Indonesia following M7.5 earthquake

About 400 people were killed, and many more swept away by giant waves after a powerful earthquake and tsunami hit the beach of the city of Palu on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday.

“The tsunami didn’t come by itself, it dragged cars, logs, houses, it hit everything on land,” spokesman of Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency BNPB told reporters.

The tsunami struck with a speed of 800 km/h, destroying or causing “extensive” damage to thousands of buildings and public infrastructure along the shoreline and beyond, BNPB reported.

Amnesty International USA Urges US Senators to Halt Vote on Kavanaugh

Dear Senator,

Amnesty International USA calls on you to halt the vote on President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Amnesty International takes no position on the appointment of particular individuals to government positions, unless they are reasonably suspected of crimes under international law and could use their appointment to the position in question to either prevent accountability for these crimes or to continue perpetration. At the same time, the organization calls on governments to thoroughly vet candidates in regard to any human rights concerns arising from their prior conduct.

Amnesty International believes that the vetting of Brett Kavanaugh’s record on human rights has been insufficient and calls for the vote on his nomination for Supreme Court of the United States to be further postponed unless and until any information relevant to Kavanaugh’s possible involvement in human rights violations—including in relation to the U.S. government’s use of torture and other forms of ill-treatment, such as during the CIA detention program—is declassified and made public.

Amnesty International has long called for declassification of any documents or other materials depicting or describing enforced disappearance, torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or other human rights violations, including acts of abduction and rendition, by US or non-US personnel after the attacks in the USA on September 11, 2001.

According to his biography, Brett Kavanaugh “served for more than five years in the White House for President George W. Bush. From July 2003 until May 2006, he was Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary to the President. From 2001 to 2003, he was Associate Counsel and then Senior Associate Counsel to the President.” In a letter dated August 16, 2018, Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to make a number of documents related to Brett Kavanaugh’s record public, noting that, “at least two documents that are publicly available on the Bush Library website from Judge Kavanaugh’s time as Staff Secretary suggest that he was involved in issues related to torture and rendition after 9/11.” More information must be made public to determine Kavanaugh’s role in relation to such practices.

In addition to concerns about Kavanaugh’s involvement in torture and other ill-treatment by the U.S. government, Amnesty International is deeply concerned about Brett Kavanaugh’s record on a range of other human rights issues, including sexual and reproductive rights, access to abortion, women’s rights, LGBTI Rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, environmental rights, gun violence, refugee rights, criminal justice, surveillance and detentions at Guantánamo.

As sexual assault also implicates a number of human rights, including the right to be free from gender-based discrimination and violence, we also call for a thorough vetting in regard to any allegations made against Kavanaugh to this effect, including those by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez.

Mosquitoes are considered as the most dangerous animals in the world, responsible for more human deaths than any other animal. In 2016, the World Health Organization reported 216 million new cases of malaria and an estimated 445,000 deaths caused by malaria alone worldwide. Other pathogens spread by mosquitoes include dengue, yellow fever, West Nile, chikungunya, and Zika viruses. [CDC]

Vectorborne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases and kill about 700,000 people each year. Vectorborne infections can result in mild illness, including fever, muscle or joint pain, and rash, or more severe illness. Severe illness can include swelling of the brain, crippling pain, fetal abnormalities, or death. In fact, the English meaning of the name of one such disease, chikungunya, is “that which bends up,” a description of the contorted posture of people affected with that disease. [CDC]

‘A Real Disaster’: Surge in the spread of deadly superbug in NZ

48 New Zealanders test positive to carrying CPE superbug 

“Doctors are warning a powerful superbug could become deadly if it continues to spread in New Zealand at its present rate.

“So far this year, 48 New Zealanders have tested positive to carrying the bacteria known as carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriaceae (CPE), up from 33 people last year. It was found in just 30 people in the six years from 2009 to 2014.

“CPE are bacteria that produce an enzyme that deactivates a powerful group of antibiotics called carbapenems, meaning they are difficult to treat.

“In most cases, the bug sits in the body, usually the bowel or gut, and causes no harm. But if it gets the bloodstream or urine it can be life threatening.”

New Zealand’s cases of “flesh-eating” disease have surged by 300 percent since 1990

The astronomical rise in the necrotising fasciitis in New Zealand was revealed to scientists at the UK Health Protection Agency conference in Warwick, England.

The International Journal of Infectious Diseases has published a paper by Dr Dilip Das and others who identified necrotising fasciitis and cellulitis as emerging major health problems in New Zealand.

Das says the reasons for the meteoric rise in the number of NZ cases remain a mystery, “but the researchers had ruled out changes made in 2004 to the way diseases were recorded,” a report said.

West Nile fever virus infects hundreds, killing dozens in Greece, Israel

As of September 20 (13:00 hours), some 234 “laboratory diagnosed cases of WNV infection have been reported to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (HCDCP), the center reported. Some 183 “of which presented with neuro-invasive disease (WNND, encephalitisand/ or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis)” and 51 cases with “mild symptoms (febrile syndrome).” Some 27 deaths were reported in patients, the weekly report said.

US WNV infections

As of September 18, 2018, a total of 47 states and the District of Columbia have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes in 2018. Overall, 1,077 cases of West Nile virus disease in people have been reported to CDC. Of these, 608 (56%) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 469 (44%) were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease. [CDC]
