Six U.S. Fisheries to Receive Disaster Relief

Fishery Disasters caused by tsunami,  river flood, drought … and Hurricane Sandy

Six fisheries across the U.S. that were declared fishery disasters in 2012 and 2013 will receive $75 million in disaster relief funds, announced NOAA.

The allocations from the disaster relief fund will go to

• Commercial fisheries in American Samoa (damaged by the tsunami of 2009)
• Commercial fisheries in Mississippi (affected by the Mississippi River flood of 2011)
• The New England multispecies groundfish fishery for the 2013 season
• Alaska’s Chinook salmon fishery for 2011 and 2012 (near collapses)
• The Florida oyster fishery in the Gulf of Mexico (damaged by  drought in 2012)
• Fisheries in New York and New Jersey (destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012)

State Of Disaster Declared in Michigan Counties

Fast-moving wildfire consumes 23,000 acres in Michigan

Luce and Schoolcraft counties in Upper Peninsula were declared disaster areas, while an outdoor burning ban was issued for 49 Michigan counties.

Many homes and several tourist destinations in Lake Superior State Forest have been evacuated in the region, as a fast moving wildfire called Duck Lake Fire consumes about 23,000 acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, destroying scores of structures including vacation homes.

“The whole sky is just smoke,” said Beverly Holmes, Newberry village manager, who was driving on a highway east of town, AP reported. “It’s like a heavy fog.”

The fire is threatening a resort in Pike Lake area.

A second blaze at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in neighboring Schoolcraft County, which was also sparked by lightning, had consumed about 4,000 acres of forest and wetland, as of posting.

Other Wildfires

• Florida, USA.   “A wildfire that is burning in Orlando blew heavy smoke near the busy hotel and attractions district of Walt Disney world at the start of the busy Memorial Day weekend,” a report said.
• New Mexico, USA.  The massive Whitewater-Baldy blaze ( Gila Wilderness blaze), which has destroyed more than 2 dozen cabins and outbuilding in the Willow Creek Subdivision, Gila National forest, has grown to about 90,000 acres.
  • The nearby town of Mogollon is under a voluntary evacuation.
  • The two blazes, which merged forming the giant Gila Wilderness fire, were ignited buy lightning
• Utah, USA.  Lightning also sparked a  large blaze near Great Salt Lake, Utah, which has consumed about 4,000 acres.
• Nevada, USA.  Fire is still raging south of Carson City. The Topaz Ranch Estates wildfire has so far consumed about 35km²  of brush, destroying two dozen homes and outbuildings.
• Arizona, USA.  The so-called Gladiator Fire, currently Arizona’s largest wildfire, is still raging in the Grand Canyon. The massive blaze has so far consumed about 70km²  of ponderosa pine and brush some 65km north of Phoenix. The fire prompted evacuations last week.

• Balkans.  The worst drought in more than 4 decades has drastically reduced electricity production at hydro power dams on Neretva river in southern Bosnia.
  • The drought, which began late last summer,  has reduced production from about 2,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year to less than a quarter of that amount, reports said.
  • The five lake that supply power to southern Bosnia are said to be in their lowest levels ever.
  • “There are no fish left here,” said a local, standing on his boat house, stranded in the mud.
  • Albania’s electricity output is almost entirely from hydro power, Bosnia gets 50 percent, Croatia and Slovenia 40 percent each, Serbia 30 percent and Montenegro 17 percent, while Kosovo relies heavily on coal.

Other Global Disasters

• Switzerland. From Val d’Anniviers to Walhalla. At least 28 people, including 22 schoolchildren, were killed when the driver of a Belgian bus crashed his vehicle in a tunnel in Switzerland.
  • The children were returning home after a week skiing in Val d’Anniviers in the Swiss Alps.
  • The remaining 24 children were injured in the crash near Sierre, in Valais, close to the border with Italy.
  • Most of the children were aged 12, and the bus,  one of three, was reportedly hired by a Christian group.

• Bangladesh.  Some 122 people were drowned or missing after a passenger ferry collided with a small oil tanker and sank in the Meghna River, southwest of the capital, Dhaka.

• Argentina.  Drought and blazing summer sun have destroyed about a fifth of Argentina’s corn crop.
  • Farmers have stopped late-season corn planting.
  • The lingering drought also threatens the country’s soy harvest.
  • Argentina’s corn harvest forecast is down by 5 million to 7 million metric tons and soybean harvest by 3 million tons, reports said.
  • December rainfall was down to an overall average of about 25mm, down sharply from 85-mm average in December 2010.
  • Argentina is world’s 2nd-largest corn exporter and 3rd largest soybean seller.
  • The country supplies about 20 percent of the world’s traded corn, and half the soymeal.
• Chile. About 60 wildfires have killed, injured or left up to a dozen firefighters missing.
  • Blazes fanned by high winds, have consumed hundreds of homes and destroyed at least 50,000 hectares of woodland and brush since December 26, 2011.
  • Some of the fires were reportedly started by arsonists, one by an Israeli tourist.
  • Chilean President Pinera has invoked anti-terror legislation, which allows for steeper punishments.
  • A blaze in Biobio region has destroyed about 190 hectares of apple trees, cherry orchards and vineyards, a report said.
  • “Up to 300 farmers have lost or suffered damage to their crops, apiaries, warehouses and equipment. It’s estimated the blazes have claimed 67 greenhouses, 640 head of livestock and 650 beehives.”
  • The Agriculture Minister has declared a state of emergency in Quillón, Ránquil, San Rosendo and Florida provinces.
  • An unusually hot and dry weather has prevailed in Chile in the past few months.
• Netherlands. About 1,000 villagers from four villages in the province of Groningen, the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands, are being evacuated after an inland dyke began leaking, and threatened to break amid torrential rains.
  • Local authorities are also moving thousands of cattle from farms in the flood-risk areas.
  • “Hundreds of acres of land would flood in a matter of hours, while the water level in the area would rise to at least 1.50 meters. This is why we started the evacuation,” a local official said at a news conference.

• Nigeria.At least 54 people have been killed in ethnic clashes between the Ezza and Ezilo peoples in the eastern Nigeria’s state of Ebonyi due to land disputes.
  • Nigerian President Jonathan declared a state of emergency in parts of the country after attacks from Boko Haram, an extremist group said to be opposed to Western education, including one on Christmas Day which left dozens of people dead in in Abuja.
  • The emergency is in force in parts of the Yobe and Borno states in the northeast, Plateau state in central Nigeria and Niger state in the west, reports said.
