UTAH – Earthquake History – USGS/EHP

On March 12, 1934, at 8:06 a.m., an earthquake of intensity VIII originating near Kosmo, on the north shore of Great Salt Lake, affected an area of about 440,000 square kilometers, including much of northern Utah and parts of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming. This tremor, which measured magnitude 6.6, could have caused great damage in a densely populated area. Because of the sparse settlement in the region there was very little damage – mostly demolished chimneys and cracked walls in poorly constructed buildings. Two deaths, however, were attributed to the shock. The outstanding feature of the earthquake, related to the Hansel Valley fault, was the emission of large quantities of water from fissures and craterlets. Considerable faulting occurred in the epicentral region. Precise leveling revealed that areas sank to depths up to 390 millimeters. The onset of the shock was abrupt. There were no foreshocks, but aftershocks continued for 2 days; only one, at 11:20 a.m. on the same day, was outstanding (magnitude 6.0). There was moderate damage over a broad area, including Salt Lake City, where plaster fell. All chimneys fell in Kosmo and Monument; fissures, holes, cracks, and springs appeared in connection with a belt of fractures at least 8 kilometers long. The second shock was slightly less severe than the main tremor. Intensities for the aftershock are very unreliable because many observers tried to describe both earthquakes in a single report. Another strong aftershock (magnitude 5.5) affected an area of about 45,000 square kilometers in northern Utah and southern Idaho on May 6. It was reported to be strongest in Salt Lake City and Preston, Idaho, where the intensity reached VI.

Centered at 6.855°S, 155.017°E the 6.5Mw quake struck at a depth of 39.4km (24.5mi), about 78km (48mi) SW of Panguna, PNG.

The quake followed heightened seismicity in the area triggered by a M7.1 quake that struck 57km SW of Panguna, Papua New Guinea on April 11.

Chile-Peru Trench Continued Seismicity

M6.0 – 84km SW of Iquique, Chile 2014-04-11 00:01:44 UTC

At least two more significant aftershocks struck along the Peru- Chile Trench following the deadly M8.2 quake, which struck Chile on April 1 (UTC).

The other significant aftershock was a M5.0 which struck 88km WNW of Iquique, Chile at 17:49:10 UTC (20.035°S 70.963°W depth=11.8km)

Chile declares disaster zones after major earthquake

Chilean President has declared parts of northern Chile disaster areas after a large earthquake measuring 8.2Mw struck offshore about 95km NW of Iquique.

The quake struck off the northern coast of Chile late Tuesday, triggering tsunami waves of up to 2.1m that hit the coastal areas.

There have been reports of large landslides, fires, power cuts and prison escapes. The landslides reportedly blocked highways, hampering mass evacuation efforts.

Quake-related deaths stood at five, with more than 80,000 people displaced as of posting,  reported the interior ministry.

President Bachelet said she would visit Arica and Tarapaca regions on Wednesday, and would dispatch the military  to the disaster areas to prevent looting and disorder.

Since march 16, hundreds of earthquakes have occurred along the Peru-Chile trench off the northern coast of Chile. A 6.7 magnitude quake struck the region on March 16, prompting the authorities to evacuate about 120,000 people in low-lying areas.

• Tsunami waves are hitting Pisagua, Patache and Iquique, CHILE, as the  authorities evacuate coastal areas.
• Multiple landslides have blocked several highways,  hampering mass evacuations along coastal areas.
• The quake rattled buildings in Peru and Bolivian capital of La Paz, about 450km (278 miles) away.

Tsunami Warning/Watch

The first tsunami wave hit the coastal area within 45 minutes of the earthquake, said authorities. A tsunami warning has been issued for all of South and Central America’s Pacific coast.

The quake struck at a depth of 80km rattling the entire southern tip of Japan, according to JMA.

Sendai, Ikata and Genkai Nuclear Power Plants

The quake which occurred less than three days after the third anniversary of the triple meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear station, also coincided with the announcement by Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) that two reactors operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co have been placed on a list for priority screening at a meeting of officials reviewing restart applications.

The quake occurred about 250km NE of Kyushu Electric’s Sendai Nuclear Power Plant (31.83°N 130.19°E), less than 57km NW of Ikata Nuclear Power Plant (three reactors) located in Ehime Prefecture, and about 180km east of Genkai Nuclear Power Plant (4 reactors) in Saga Pref.

WE consider both the timing and location of this powerful seismic warning as perfect!

Japanese authorities should base any and all of their nuclear planning on one factor alone: There’ll be NO more warning before the big ones…

M6.2  strikes near Palmerston North, New Zealand

The quake was felt thoroughout New Zealand’s North Island, from Invercargill to Auckland, and as far south as Canterbury in the South Island, according to local reports.

The mainshock was followed by a swarm of aftershocks, with the largest measuring 3.7Mw, as of posting.

The quakes have caused damage to buildings and roads in the lower North Island between Wellington and Manawatu, said reports.

The quake was felt widely in the capital Wellington, leaving “people screaming and ducking for cover as items fell from shelves,” in a shopping mall, said a report.

The shock knocked power to thousands of customers  in Tararua, Manawatu and Taranaki, according to the local power company.

Tectonic Summary

The January 20, 2014 M6.2 earthquake northeast of Masterton in the North Island of New Zealand is located approximately 115 km northeast of Wellington. The earthquake resulted from northeast-southwest oriented normal faulting 175 km to the west of the Hikurangi Trench, where the Pacific plate subducts westward beneath the North Island. At the latitude of this event, the Pacific plate moves towards the west-southwest with respect to the Australia plate at a rate of approximately 42 mm/yr. The faulting character, location and depth of this earthquake indicate it is an intraplate event either within Australia plate crust above the subducting Pacific plate, or within the interior of subducted Pacific slab, rather than a plate boundary event on the subduction zone thrust interface.

New Zealand experiences fairly frequent moderate-sized earthquakes; the region within 200 km of the January 20, 2014 event has experienced 35 earthquakes of M 5.5 or larger over the past century. The 2014 event is just a few kilometers to the east of a M 7.3 earthquake in March of 1934, and approximately 40 km southwest of two M6.2 and 6.4 earthquakes near Dannevirke in March and May of 1990, respectively. State of Calamity Declared in Bohol & Cebu Provinces, Philippines

Powerful M7.1 Quake Causes Much Destruction in Central Philippines+

Philippine authorities have declared declared states of calamity in Bohol and Cebu Provinces after a powerful quake killed at least 80 people and left about 180 others injured, destroying or damaging scores of homes, buildings, historical churches, and causing widespread damage to public infrastructure across the famed tourist islands.

The M7.1 [revised by USGS/EHP] quake struck the island province of Bohol, about 2km NE of Catigbian, Philippines at a depth of about 20km [revised by USGS/EHP] at 00:12:32 UTC on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

Centered at 9.866°N, 124.011°E,  the deadly quake struck about 619km (385mi) SSE of Manila, according to USGS/EHP.

The mainshock was followed by large swarms of at least 400 aftershocks including 10 tremors measuring 5.0Mw or greater, as of posting.

The quake has affected tens of thousands of people, most of whom were left without electricity, tap water, communication or transportation links.

Half dozen bridges have collapsed, and many road have buckled due to the quake energy.

Strong Quake Shakes Fukushima NPP

M5.8 Strikes 42km SE of Fukushima Nuke Plant

A strong quake measuring 5.8Mw struck 42km southeast (230º) of the disaster-ridden Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant at a depth of 20km, Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.

Centered at 37.1N, 140.7E, the quake struck at 02:25 JST on September 20, 2013.

Tremors were felt in 17 prefectures across Japan, causing buildings to sway in the capital Tokyo, about 170km away, according to eyewitnesses.

Two Strong Quakes Strike Bering Sea

Quakes measuring up to 6.6 and 6.3Mw struck about 470 km SW of Gambell, Alaska

The mainshock was preceded by a foreshock measuring up to 4.6Mw.

The mainshock was centered at 60.644°N, 177.901°W and struck at a depth of of about 12km on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 23:11:44UTC.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any tsunami warning, watch or advisory.

According to news reports Tsunami Warning Center officials in Anchorage, Alaska, did not feel the shocks.

Quake Death Toll Reaches 62: Local Sources

MAJOR AFTERSHOCK STRIKES NEAR EPICENTER – MORE CASUALTIES MAY BE EXPECTED

As of posting at least 3 dozen aftershocks have rocked the region where the deadly 6.0-magnitude quake struck earlier today.

At least 6 villages have been damaged in the quake, with three reportedly “flattened.”

The villages of Okcular,  Kayali and Yukari Kanatli have been the hardest hit.  A number of villagers are trapped under rubble. Many of the affected villagers lived in mud-brick structure built on hillsides that are particularly prone to collapse in the event of earthquakes.

About 120 people were reportedly injured, as of posting.

TOKYO and its outlying cities are home to almost one-quarter of Japan’s 127 million people. Tokyo dominates Japan’s politics, arts, finance, trade, and communications, and accounts for a third of its wealth. Eighty years ago, the region suffered one of the world’s most destructive earthquakes, killing 143,000 people, destroying two-thirds of Tokyo, and all of Yokohama. The earthquake left $68 billion in property damage, ten times that wrought by the 1995 M=6.9 Kobe earthquake. Today, the population of greater Tokyo is six times larger than it was in 1923. To accommodate this growth, about 385 square kilometers of land rimming Tokyo Bay, or about a quarter of the bay, has been reclaimed for urban and industrial use. A repeat of the 1923 M=7.9 Kanto earthquake is estimated to cause 30-60,000 deaths 80-100,000 hospitalized injuries, and total economic losses of $2.1-3.3 trillion, comprised equally of property and business-interruption losses. Insured losses were estimated to be $31-36 billion.
