Quake May Have Caused Heavy Damage

The epicenter was located in a mountainous region of Myanmar near the borders with Thailand and Laos.

Tremors were felt in Bangkok and Hanoi.

Buildings swayed in Bangkok, about 770 kilometers south of the epicenter, AP reported.

No reports of damage as of posting; however, heavy damage could have occurred near the epicenter because buildings in the rural region are believed to be vulnerable to strong shocks.

A5.8 quake, which struck Yingjiang County in southwest China’s Yunnan Province (MYANMAR-CHINA BORDER REGION), killed at least 24 people and injured more than 200 others two weeks ago, a report said. The shock also destroyed about 1,000 buildings.

Quake Death Toll Reaches 62: Local Sources

MAJOR AFTERSHOCK STRIKES NEAR EPICENTER – MORE CASUALTIES MAY BE EXPECTED

As of posting at least 3 dozen aftershocks have rocked the region where the deadly 6.0-magnitude quake struck earlier today.

At least 6 villages have been damaged in the quake, with three reportedly “flattened.”

The villages of Okcular,  Kayali and Yukari Kanatli have been the hardest hit.  A number of villagers are trapped under rubble. Many of the affected villagers lived in mud-brick structure built on hillsides that are particularly prone to collapse in the event of earthquakes.

About 120 people were reportedly injured, as of posting.

Another Strong Quake Strikes Taiwan

Strong earthquake measuring 6.7 Mw strikes off the coast of Taiwan

The M6.7 earthquake struck about 25 km (15 miles) SSE of Hua-lien, Taiwan, at a depth of about 40 km on Saturday 19 December 2009 at 13:02 UTC.

The quake’s epicenter was about 19 km NE of another similarly strong earthquake measuring up to 6.4 Mw which on October 4, 2009.

Deadly Earthquake Strikes Java, Indonesia

UPDATE:

  • At least 40 people are killed by the powerful quake, with twice as many missing, feared dead.
  • Up to a thousand buildings have been destroyed or damaged.
  • About 350 people injured.
  • The worst hit areas are  Cianjur, about 100km south of the capital Jakarta, city of Tasikmalaya and the town of Sukabumi.
