Powerful M7.1 Quake Causes Much Destruction in Central Philippines+

Philippine authorities have declared declared states of calamity in Bohol and Cebu Provinces after a powerful quake killed at least 80 people and left about 180 others injured, destroying or damaging scores of homes, buildings, historical churches, and causing widespread damage to public infrastructure across the famed tourist islands.

The M7.1 [revised by USGS/EHP] quake struck the island province of Bohol, about 2km NE of Catigbian, Philippines at a depth of about 20km [revised by USGS/EHP] at 00:12:32 UTC on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

Centered at 9.866°N, 124.011°E,  the deadly quake struck about 619km (385mi) SSE of Manila, according to USGS/EHP.

The mainshock was followed by large swarms of at least 400 aftershocks including 10 tremors measuring 5.0Mw or greater, as of posting.

The quake has affected tens of thousands of people, most of whom were left without electricity, tap water, communication or transportation links.

Half dozen bridges have collapsed, and many road have buckled due to the quake energy.

M8.7 Earthquake strikes off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia

The earthquake was epicentered at  2.348°N, 93.073°E and occurred at a depth of 32km, according to USGS.

Distances:

  • 435 km (270 miles) SW (215°) from Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia
  • 964 km (599 miles) W (265°) from KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia

Indian Ocean Tsunami Travel Time Map


A magnitude 9.1 Mw earthquake occurred off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on December 26, 2004. It was the fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and the largest since the 1964 Prince William Sound, Alaska, earthquake. The earthquake generated a tsunami that caused more casualties than any other in recorded history. The tsunami was recorded nearly world-wide on tide gauges in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. In total, more than 227,8980 people were killed or missing and 1,126,900 were displaced by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 14 countries in South Asia and East Africa. Source:  NGDC

Japan Earthquake Forecast

FIRE-EARTH estimates that about 80 exajoules (EJ) of tectonic stress energy could be accumulated in Japan Region between now and early 2016.

Most of the energy is forecast to be released as large earthquakes including a massive shock, a Megathrust earthquake, the largest on record, measuring 10.0+Mw releasing about 64EJ of energy.

[NOTE: The 1960 Valdivia earthquake (The Great Chilean Earthquake) is the largest ever earthquake recorded measuring 9.5Mw. The quake struck on May 22, 1960 at 38.29ºS, 73.0ºW. Seismic moment release: ~ 11.3 EJ]

Japan Trench Mega Thrust Earthquake No. 1 (JPTRMT1)  could break up the Honshu island into some half dozen fragments and scores of smaller splinters. [An impression depicting the new geography of the islands may be posted later.]

The Megashock could trigger a colossal tsunami completely submerging coastal areas around the Pacific Ocean, and traveling many miles inland.

JPTRMT1 could trigger multiple volcanic eruptions throughout Japan Region and rest of the western half of the PRF, as far away as in Alaska, the Philippines, Indonesia, PNG, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand and rest of the South Pacific region. [Groups J, H, K and L on the map below.

The 10.0+Mw Megashock, its massive aftershocks, the spawned mountainous tsunamis and the multiple volcanic eruptions would cause  death and destruction on unprecedented scales throughout the Pacific Rim countries and beyond.

The impact of the volcanic eruptions would affect the entire world, resulting in severe climatic episodes, major losses of crops, famine and exacerbate mass dieoffs, which may have already started as a result of drought and deluge and other collapse mechanisms.

Chilean Quake Shortened the Earth Days?

NASA Rocket Scientists Say ‘Chilean Quake May Have Shortened Earth Days’

NASA JPL researchers claim the February 27, megaquake measuring 8.8Mw that destroyed many Chilean coastal towns, may have also shortened the duration of the planet’s day.

JPL research scientist Richard Gross says he and fellow researchers, using a complex model, have calculated how the Earth’s rotation should have changed as a result of the Chilean mega quake. He claims, “Earth’s figure axis (the axis about which Earth’s mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth’s figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet). ”

According to their preliminary calculation, the quake should have shortened the duration of the planetary day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second).

“Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth’s axis. Gross calculates the quake should have moved Earth’s figure axis (the axis about which Earth’s mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (~ 80 mm, or 3 inches). Earth’s figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet).”

Gross says, the 2004 9.1-magnitude Sumatran earthquake should have shortened the day’s length by an estimated 6.8 microseconds, shifting the planet’s axis by 2.32 milliarcseconds (~ 70mm).

Gross said that even though the Chilean earthquake is much smaller than the Sumatran quake, it is predicted to have changed the position of the figure axis by a bit more for two reasons. First, unlike the 2004 Sumatran earthquake, which was located near the equator, the 2010 Chilean earthquake was located in Earth’s mid-latitudes, which makes it more effective in shifting Earth’s figure axis. Second, the fault responsible for the 2010 Chilean earthquake dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 Sumatran earthquake. This makes the Chile fault more effective in moving Earth’s mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting Earth’s figure axis.”

Gross believes the Chile estimates could change as quake data are further refined.

IF these important findings can be verified, let’s hope, for the planet’s sake and ours, we won’t have another 68,571,428,571 magnitude 8.8 quakes occurring all in the same place and in such way that they do NOT cancel out each other’s axial shift!

Notes:

  1. Fire-Earth has NO independent verification of the above claims, as of posting.
  2. The energy released by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake is about 31.6 times greater than that of a M8.0 shock.
  3. The Chilean M8.8 megaquake released about 1 exajoule of energy (about 240 megaton, or 16,000 times the size of Hiroshima A-bomb). It was about 180 times greater than the energy from  the recent Haiti quake (estimated at 7.3Mw).
  4. The 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake released about 2.81 exajoules of energy, about 2.82 times greater than the Chilean 8.8 quake.
  5. Largest ever instrumentally-recorded earthquake, the 9.5Mw supershock that struck Chile on May 22, 1960 was 11.2 time more powerful than Chile’s February 27 quake described above.
