Couple who allegedly starved their baby, while nurturing a virtual baby on Internet, go on trial

The trial of an unemployed couple who were arrested in March, accused of starving their baby to death began today in Suwon, a satellite city south of Seoul, South Korea.

The couple reportedly left their 3-months old baby alone for 12-hour periods, as they played on-line games in a cyber cafe. A male, 41, and his partner, 25, are charged with negligent homicide.

Ironically the couple developed an obsession with a role-playing game called Prius Online, a 3D fantasy game, in which players raise a virtual baby girl called “Anima,” creating a second life for themselves.

“The couple seemed to have lost their will to live a normal life because they didn’t have jobs and gave birth to a premature baby,” Chung Jin-Won, a police officer, told Yonhap, a Korean news outlet. “They indulged themselves in the online game of raising a virtual character so as to escape from reality, which led to the death of their real baby.”
