Naples Garbage: First Commercial Dividends

Fouling your own doorstep!

Don’t foul your own doorstep, nor someone else’s! Surely the first thing Italian mothers should now teach their children.

Japan and South Korea blocked imports of mozzarella cheese, one of Italy’s best known culinary products, after larger than “permitted” levels of the lethal dioxin compound, a carcinogen, was found in the mozzarella and milk at 25 out of 130 cheese factories in the southern Campania region near Naples.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema said the alarm was “totally exaggerated and unjustified”.

Italian health officials finally sealed off 83 dairy farms were the cancer-causing dioxin contaminations were found.

“The sealed-off farms are in the southern Campania region around Naples where officials believe a garbage crisis earlier this year is linked to the higher dioxin levels. With dumps in the area full, locals burned piles of rubbish in the streets and in open fields. Health officials say industrial waste was also set ablaze, spreading fumes that in some cases contained dioxin, a toxic chemical.”

Experts believe that mozzarella sales in Italy and abroad may fall by more than 60 percent in the near future.

  • A quarter of a million Italian buffalo produce 33,000 tons of mozzarella each year.
  • About 16 percent of mozzarella produced is exported.
  • The sector employs 20,000 people at home.

“Buffalo mozzarella, which costs at least twice as much as mozzarella made with cows’ milk, is best known abroad for its use on pizza, although purists eat it on its own or with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.”

Naples: The Triangle of Death

Naples Waste-linked Deaths: Ominous Warnings to the World

Naples and parts of Campania region were dubbed “the triangle of death” by British medical journal Lancet Oncology because of the high levels of waste-related carcinogens (cancer-causing toxins) that have polluted air, soil and water. The researchers found that the mortality rate was 12 percent greater than the norm for women and 9 percent for men who lived closest to the garbage dumps.

Alarming increases in congenital malformations of the nervous and urinary systems are highlighted in the report. Fatal liver cancers were up 29 percent among women and 19 percent for men.

“Political ineptitude, corruption and crime have conspired to stop the creation of a modern, safe disposal system. People despair of their politicians and are suspicious of government schemes — like a new incinerator — aimed at ending the crisis.” Read full report.

The Swiss Solution

Posted by feww on January 12, 2008

Out of the Italian Mafia Frying Pan, Into the Swiss Mafia Fire!

No, not the $250,000 diamond studded, self-winding watch that could tell you the time only if you waved your arms 864 times yesterday. This one is a real GEM!

The Geneva canton is ready to accept the quarter of a million tons of rotting garbage that have infested the streets of Naples, Italy, for its “under-used” incinerator in Cheneviers, some 1200 km away (road/rail distance).

Geneva is already importing waste from France and Germany!

While the Cheneviers Incinerator [designed probably by the NeoNasty professors at ETH Zurich] works below optimal capacity, it makes little sense trying to educate the “barbarians” in France, Germany and Italy that it would be crazy to export their waste 1200km away, especially when the problem could be eliminated by practicing the ‘6Rs’: Removing (ZERO waste), reducing, repairing, recycling (locally), reusing, recirculating.

Isn’t it ironic that although only a few percent of Naples citizens have the financial “privilege” of ever visiting Switzerland, their household garbage receives “VIP” treatment all the way to Geneva?
