Greedy Google Grows Grabbing National Assets

Posted by feww on January 26, 2010

submitted by a reader

First NASA and Now NOAA

Google is gradually absorbing lucrative segments of national institutions

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, is targeted by Google for eventual takeover.

NOAA’s Press Release proudly declares:

Picture This: NOAA, Google Join Forces to Visualize Scientific Data

Now Picture This, Einstein: Most of you guys would be out of a job as soon as Google can seize the opportunity to engineer  a “takeover” and have NOAA bastardized into tiny commercial/ semi-commercial units.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a government organization whose roots go back more than two centuries. It collects, analyzes, predicts and disseminates data on weather. Why does it need a corporate predator to teach it how to chew the fat, or shoot the breeze?

NOAA’s website says:

NOAA is an agency that enriches life through science. Our reach goes from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor as we work to keep citizens informed of the changing environment around them.

NOT for much longer, if Google has anything to do with it. Translation: Don’t hold your breaths!

NOAA’s Press Release continues:

NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and Google have signed a cooperative research and development agreement outlining how they will work together to create state-of-the-art visualizations of scientific data to illustrate how our planet works.

You mean a business deal,  where Google stands behind, while NOAA grabs its proverbial ankles, right?

“It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Here, we think NOAA’s billions of bits of data are worth thousands of pictures,” said Richard W. Spinrad, Ph.D., NOAA assistant administrator for oceanic and atmospheric research. “Through this agreement, Google’s technical expertise will help to improve access to NOAA data in ways that allow the scientific community and the public to better use our information to understand earth science and make informed decisions.”

Why fix something, if it ain’t broke?

It’s unclear whether the deal was authorized by Richard W. Spinrad, Ph.D., NOAA assistant administrator, or signed by NOAA Administrator, Dr. Jane Lubchenco.

Under the agreement, NOAA and Google plan to work together on research and development to join NOAA’s oceanographic, meteorological, biological, and climatological data with Google’s software capabilities. The wide availability of Google’s Internet tools has the potential to bring visualizations of NOAA data to new audiences around the world.

Oh, really? Have you asked Google just exactly why THEY are doing all this and WHAT exactly THEY expect to get from it, Mr Assistant Administrator? Of course not! I bet you’re too busy admiring the wine!

What’s wrong with NOAA and the intelligent parts of NASA and … working together? What’s the problem, are they short of scientists, funds, time or something?

Dr. Jane Lubchenco, as NOAA Administrator YOU have a duty to protect national assets. Google is predatory, non-charitable organization. PULL out of the deal before they DESTROY NOAA and its national assets.

Stop grossly greedy google growing gigantic gobbling govt goods!

Another NASA White Elephant Launch

Posted by feww on June 22, 2009

Lunar or Lunatic?  YOU decide!

Why Should All the Taxpayer Money Go to the Greedy Banks?

… When NASA can build white elephants and shoot them to the moon?

The NASA caption for the above image reads:

Does a permanently shadowed crater at the Moon’s South Pole harbor frozen water?

Who really cares, when it’s most of the country that’s running out of water!

Enough to supply a lunar outpost?

Are you **** serious? Between the war budget and NASA extravaganza, who’s going to feed the nation, provide health and education?

How much ultraviolet and cosmic radiation would astronauts be exposed to if they stayed on the moon for a week or longer?

If you don’t have an answer after 40 years of moon experience …

Where are the best—and worst—landing sites on the Moon? These are some of the questions that NASA plans to answer with its two new lunar missions.

That works to about $125 million dollars a question. Have you thought of designing a lottery machine that could predict the winning numbers…

Above : Artist rendering of the LRO spacecraft.

The point of these lunar missions is to collect the kinds of information we need to return astronauts to the moon. But the point of going to the moon is to learn about the Earth and our solar system (and ultimately, the universe). More than four billion years ago, as our solar system was forming, a planetary object roughly the size of Mars smacked into the Earth. The collision shattered the small planet and probably vaporized the upper layers of Earth’s surface. The debris—part Earth, part destroyed planet—remained in orbit around the Earth. Eventually, the debris aggregated into the Moon. If this theory, widely accepted among astrophysicists, is correct, then the formation of the Earth is inextricably tied to the formation of the Moon. And because the Moon’s surface has not been endlessly remodeled by plate tectonics, volcanoes, or erosion, it should be able to tell us things about how the Earth came to be that our planet itself never will.

Expensive theories indeed! Let’s see, the only way you can prove these “Beverly Hills” hypothesis is by being there on the moon, right? An the only people qualified to get there, of course are, let me guess, “the NASA experts.” And can’t achieve that without bailing out NASA, as it were, year in, year out. Right?

Launching an Open Challenge to NASA

FEWW has decided to launch the NASA [no holds barred] CHALLENGE and hereby challenges NASA executives to provide the following information:

Show the taxpayers without whose dollars you’d have to go out and work for your money

1. In what way(s) have the hundreds of billions of dollars spent by NASA in the past4 decades made the taxpayers home planet, Earth, a sustainable space base?

2. How much more money and how many more years would it take to do all of the things you say you could do on the moon and Mars?

3. How many of the taxpayers would you ever allow to escape to Mars or even the moon?

4. If NASA was to be wound up [or shut down] tomorrow and you were told to do something useful on this planet with the annual bailout money you currently receive, on what would you spend the existing NASA budget?

Antarctic Ozone Depth Down to 100 DU

Posted by feww on October 8, 2008

Having broken the previous size record [up by 1million km², or 3.9 %, to 27,000 km²,] the Antarctic ozone depth fell to a low of 100 DU

The George W. Bush Antarctic Ozone Hole – October 04, 2008

Source: NASA Ozone Hole Watch

From a previous entry:

A Deserving Dedication

The Moderators would like to dedicate this year’s Antarctic ozone hole to the outgoing [hopefully] US president [sic] Mr GW Bush. Furthermore we invite all parties concerned to consider renaming the Antarctic Ozone Hole after GW Bush for his contribution to the worsening state of the world. During his 8-year occupation of White House, Mr Bush caused more damage to the world (environment, climate, humanity, security … ) than anyone else before him.

[It’s hoped that NASA employees responsible for Ozone Hole Watch retain the integrity of all data, and blow the whistle if they find any anomaly in the data sets, this year.]

Ozone Facts

What is Ozone?

Ozone is a colorless gas. Chemically, ozone is very active; it reacts readily with a great many other substances. Near the Earth’s surface, those reactions cause rubber to crack, hurt plant life, and damage people’s lung tissues. But ozone also absorbs harmful components of sunlight, known as “ultraviolet B”, or “UV-B”. High above the surface, above even the weather systems, a tenuous layer of ozone gas absorbs UV-B, protecting living things below. (Source: NASA Ozone Watch)

What is a Dobson Unit?

The Dobson Unit (DU) is the unit of measure for total ozone. If you were to take all the ozone in a column of air stretching from the surface of the earth to space, and bring all that ozone to standard temperature (0 °Celsius) and pressure (1013.25 millibars, or one atmosphere, or “atm”), the column would be about 0.3 centimeters thick. Thus, the total ozone would be 0.3 atm-cm. To make the units easier to work with, the “Dobson Unit” is defined to be 0.001 atm-cm. Our 0.3 atm-cm would be 300 DU. (Source: NASA Ozone Watch)

Exposure to Excessive UV Radiation

Without Ozone life on Earth is not possible. Ozone depletion allows higher levels of UV radiation (UVA and UVB) reaching the Earth’s surface and poses the biggest threat to life and the ecosystems. The amount of UV radiation reaching the Antarctica can double during the annual “ozone hole”- a severe depletion of ozone layer.

At usual times, when the ozone hole disappears, New Zealand still receives at least 42 percent more ultraviolet rays than Northern Hemisphere.

NASA and NOAA Declare 2006 Ozone Hole a Double Record Breaker

“The ozone hole of 2006 is the most severe ozone hole (least amount of ozone) observed to date. NASA’s Aura satellite observed a low value of 85 Dobson Units (DU) on Oct. 8 in a region over the East Antarctic ice sheet.”[3]

With a few exceptions, the depth and size of the Antarctic Ozone Hole is increasing each year, while the concentration of ozone, measured in Dobson Unit (DU), is decreasing. The large and persistent ozone hole will “allow much more ultraviolet light than usual to reach Earth’s surface in the southern latitudes.”[3]

Major Health Problems Linked to Overexposure to UV Radiation

Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to the potentially fatal melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, as well as skin disorders like actinic keratoses and premature aging of skin. UV radiation impairs human immune system (including reaction to certain medications, poor response to immunization, and sensitivity to sunlight) and readily damages DNA in all cells causing genetic mutations. [4]

UV radiation increases the incidents of cataracts, chronic eye disease and other eye damage, and several types of blood disease.

The Skin Cancer ‘Hot Spot.’ New Zealand (and Australia) is the worst hotspot for skin cancer in the world. Each year 1 in 29 New Zealanders is diagnosed with skin cancer.[5]

Melanoma Skin Cancers. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Many dermatologists believe that exposure to sunburns in children and young adults can lead to melanoma later in life. Reported melanoma cases in New Zealand have almost doubled since 1993 and the rising trend is expected to continue. New Zealand [and Australia] has the highest age-adjusted melanoma incidence rates in the world.[6]

New research commissioned by MoleMap New Zealand, a melanoma surveillance program, reveals about one in four New Zealand farmers have suffered skin cancer.[7]

“Almost 300 people die from melanoma each year and New Zealand has the highest melanoma death rate in the world.” Generally, skin cancer incidents occur in older age groups, however, “life-threatening melanoma is most common in people aged between 20 and 39 years.”[8]

In the United States, an estimated 7,910 people will die of melanoma in 2006. [9] The melanoma death rate in New Zealand is about three times higher than the United States.

Non-melanoma Skin Cancers. Non-melanoma skin cancers are less deadly than melanoma cases. However, they can spread, causing disfigurement and more serious health problems, if not treated early. At least 160,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer in New Zealand each year. [10]

Other types of UV-related skin cancer tumors include Basal Cell Carcinomas, and Squamous Cell Carcinomas. Although Basal cell carcinoma grows slowly, it can penetrate to the bone and cause considerable damage. Squamous Cell Carcinomas tumors, which usually appear as nodules or as red, flaky swelling, develop into large patches and spread all over the body. [11]

Cataracts and Other Eye Damage. Cataracts, a type of eye damage, causes the loss of transparency in the lens of the eye, clouds vision and can lead to blindness, if left untreated. The UV radiation increases the likelihood of developing cataracts. UV radiation also causes other kinds of eye damage including “pterygium (i.e., tissue growth that can block vision), skin cancer around the eyes, and degeneration of the macula (i.e., the part of the retina where visual perception is most acute).” [12]

Immune Suppression. Overexposure to UV radiation may suppress the body’s immune system. “Increased exposure to UV rays in animals and humans has been linked to elevated risk from the following diseases: the herpes viruses, the human immunodeficiency virus HIV- 1, a variety of papilloma viruses, leishmaniasis, malaria, forms of tuberculosis, leprosy, lupus erthematodes, dermatitis, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Since UV rays readily damage DNA in all cells, it is not unrealistic to hypothesize that this will play an additional role in the mutation of existing disease bacteria and viruses and may produce totally new strains of pathogens.” [13]

Now Another Shameful Action

Posted by feww on January 1, 2008

NASA and Reality

“NASA grudgingly released some results Monday from an $11.3 million federal air safety study it previously withheld from the public over concerns it would upset travelers [!] and hurt airline profits [!] The data reflects hundreds of cases where pilots flew too close to other planes, plunged from altitude or landed at airports without clearance.”

The data was “intentionally designed to prevent people from analyzing the rates properly and are designed to entrap analysts into computing rates that are much higher than the survey really shows,” said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor and survey expert who designed the project for NASA.

NASA Rejected request by Associate Press made under the Freedom of Information Act explaining that it did not want to undermine public confidence in the airlines or hurt airline fortunes. Full Report

NASA: The Conjuring Continues

Posted by feww on September 20, 2007

NASA Continues Doctoring Antarctic Ozone Hole Data

NASA has now re-doctored its Antarctic ozone level for September 15, 2007 (see the new graph below, which was posted on NASA Ozone Hole Watch on Sept. 19, 2007 and compare it with their previous graph posted here yesterday). The doctored and re-doctored data serve to obfuscate the overall size and development of the Antarctic ozone hole.

nasas-correction-20-9-2007.jpg

The Fire-Earth estimate for the area covered by the Antarctic ozone hole on September 16, 2007 is 28.5 million km2 (NASA’s figure is 24 million km2). This means the size of the Antarctic ozone hole was increasing on September 16, 2007 rather than decreasing as indicated by NASA.

Conclusion

The Antarctic ozone hole on September 16, 2007 covered an estimated area of 28.5 million km2 (about 19% larger than the doctored data released by NASA) and was growing. The largest ozone hole ever reported by NASA covered an area of 26 million km2 on September 24, 2006.

NASA: Not Another Shameful Admission

Posted by feww on September 19, 2007

NASA re-doctored data (again!) after they were exposed by Fire Earth yesterday!

(See previous posts.)

another-correction-2.jpg

NASA’s minimum ozone figure of 173 DU (Dobson Units) for September 15 (see updated graph above) remains wildly inaccurate and misleading. Fire Earth estimate for the minimum ozone on September 15 is in the range of 95-105 DU.

The minimum stratospheric temperature, which is marked at 183K, may have been doctored to account for the sudden rise in the minimum ozone on September 15.

NASA is under enormous pressure to prove Montreal Protocol has been “a resounding success,” despite the fact that the Antarctic ozone hole keeps on growing!

“The goal now is to ensure that CFCs and other emissions continue to fall to below the levels that produce an ozone hole,” said Goddard’s Anne Douglass, the deputy project scientist for Aura. “This won’t happen until about 2070.”

The taxpayers and their representatives (as if they had anything to do with anything) are reminded that at least 95% of all NASA ‘scientific’ activities could be carried out accurately, honestly and responsibly at a fraction of their enormous current budget (and without involving Google.com).

Google Blocks Damaging Info on NASA

Posted by feww on September 15, 2007

[REPOSTED]

Fire Earth couldn’t quite understand, after they caught NASA red-handed cooking the ozone hole data (see previous posts), why this site was effectively blocked by Google. Then the following came to light:

NASA provides unparalleled parking spot for private 767 of Google’s billionaire founders

The Independent UK; By David Usborne in New York, Published: 14 September 2007

“The men, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, have landed a privileged parking deal for their Boeing 767 that makes all other executive perks look pedestrian. Since last month, the Google Twins, as they are sometimes known, have been allowed exclusive use of a nearby private airstrip owned by NASA, no less.”

“The Google 767 has been completely refurbished with bedrooms for each of the founders and seats only fifty passengers at its rear.” Read Full Article…

Seems like the obvious answer, doesn’t it? How would you vote if defending some “derisory” issue such as freedom of speech meant you couldn’t fly in your bedroom and land next door to your office?

Unfortunately, the real reasons are much more sinister and are to do with, in Ed Crane’s words, “the subjugation and exploitation of a great majority of people by an elite few by what has been appropriately termed the ‘ruling class’.”

NASA’s Re-Doctored Data: More “Acceptable!”

Posted by feww on September 12, 2007

Having sounded the alarm bell on detecting the flagrant anomaly in NASA’s data for the Antarctic Ozone Hole, FEWW is happy to announce that NASA has now re-doctored its data to make it look more “acceptable!”

Below images show the doctored, “Before,” and re-doctored, “After,” computer generated graphics for the Antarctic Ozone Hole on September 7, 2007.

nasa-ozone-hole-09-07-07-before-after-80pc.png

Now you see it! Now you don’t!

Before: The Antarctic Ozone Hole shrank by 11 million sq km (4,248,940 squared miles), a 45.8% reduction, on September 7, 2007.

After: The Antarctic Ozone Hole (for September 7, 2007), after FEWW screamed bloody murder, grew by 11 million sq km (an increase of 84.6%) on September 11, 2007.

nasa-antarctic-ozone-hole-data-09-12-07.png

And the 64 billion dollar question why NASA attempted to “fix” the ozone hole:

Cui bono? Who benefits from NASA’s disinformation about the Environment?
