Journalists in Turkey face up to 43 years in prison

Background summary:

  • Your only right is to remain silent. If you say anything, you could be imprisoned for decades without so much as a sham trial.
  • “[Erogan’s] government closed down by decree over 160 media outlets, most linked to the Gülen movement or Kurdish media. The number of journalists in pretrial detention on the basis of their writing and journalistic activities surged to 144 by mid-November, making Turkey once again a world leader in jailing journalists.”
  • Currently, more than a  dozen journalists at Cumhuriyet, a leading opposition newspaper in Turkey, are charged with aiding a terrorist organization, and face up to 43 years in prison.
  • More than 160 journalists have already been imprisoned in Turkey without trial, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

UK Equally Guilty of Saudi War Crimes in Yemen

Posted by feww on July 25, 2017

– UK Report # 39 –

Brits choose to remain deafeningly silent, while war crimes are being committed in their names

Background Summary:

UK approved £283m of arms sales to Saudis after airstrike on Yemen funeral

“The British government approved £283m of arms sales to Saudi Arabia in the six months after a Saudi airstrike on a funeral that killed scores of people and was criticised [sic] by the UN, figures reveal.

“The airstrike, on 8 October 2016, hit a funeral hall in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, killing 140 people and injuring hundreds more, in one of the bloodiest attacks in the two-year Saudi-led campaign in Yemen.”

The World Health Organization has recorded 1,828 deaths from cholera since the outbreak in April, one of the largest outbreaks since records began in 1949.

Some 360,000 suspected cholera cases have been recorded in just three months since the outbreak started in April, making the outbreak  the largest ever recorded in any country in a single year since records began in 1949.

About 20 million people need humanitarian assistance across Yemen, while three and a half million have fled their homes since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict in September 2014.

The war has pushed the country to the verge of famine

“It has precipitated a crisis which has left 7 million people on the brink of starvation,” said Oxfam.

“Those countries providing the arms and military support, such as the US and the UK, are fueling a war that is causing wide-spread suffering and tipping a whole nation towards a catastrophe. It is hard to imagine how much more Yemen can take before it collapses entirely.”

“In 2016, Saudi Arabia spent nearly $3 billion on arms from the world’s major arms exporters.”

Maximum Alert for Forest Fires in Provence, France

Posted by feww on July 24, 2017

Drought and the Mistral wind pose unprecedented threat of forest fires in Provence

Seven of the nine departments in the southern French region of Provence are experiencing “exceptional threat” of forest fires and have been placed on maximum alert.  The other two departments, Var and the neighboring Bouches-du-Rhône, are currently on “very severe” alert.

French Grape Harvest

Meanwhile, French grape harvest is expected to drop to a historic low, this year, according to the agriculture ministry.

“At 37.6 million hectolitres the 2017 harvest is set to come in 17% lower than in 2016, and 16% below the average of the past five years.”

Germany

Very low rainfall in Germany has led to low water levels on the Rhine and Danube rivers, preventing cargo ships from being fully loaded.

Dry weather is also impacting rivers in Switzerland.

About 125,000 residents in Japan’s Akita Prefecture were ordered or advised to evacuate on Sunday as the risk of flooding and landslides increased due to record precipitation in the Tohoku region, according to local media reports.

Japanese Courts ‘Play Chicken’ with Potential Nuclear Disaster

Posted by feww on July 21, 2017

WHAT IF ANOTHER MAJOR EARTHQUAKE…?

The Ikata Nuclear Power Plant (Ikata NPP) is located in the town of Ikata in Ehime Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, Japan. It’s owned and operated by the Shikoku Electric Power Company.

The plant was shut down along with all other nuclear plants in Japan after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Currently, it is one of two nuclear power stations operating in Japan.

Two reactors at Takahama plant are also operating currently after a high court overturned an earlier decision by a district court that had stopped the NPP operations since March 2016.

Japanese high courts are evidently among the most corrupt judiciary in the world.
