An asteroid may have hit Earth and brought our planet its water

The first-ever discovery of ice and organic molecules on an asteroid may hold clues to the origins of Earth’s oceans and life 4 billion years ago.

University of Central Florida researchers detected a thin layer of water ice and organic molecules on the surface of 24 Themis, the largest in a family of asteroids orbiting between Mars and Jupiter.

Their unexpected findings will be published Thursday, April 29 in Nature, which will feature two complementary articles by the UCF-led team and by another team of planetary scientists.

“What we’ve found suggests that an asteroid like this one may have hit Earth and brought our planet its water,” said UCF Physics Professor Humberto Campins, the study’s lead author.

Some theories suggest asteroids brought water to Earth after the planet formed dry. Scientists say the salts and water that have been found in some meteorites support this view.

Using NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii, Campins and his team of researchers measured the intensity of the reflected sunlight as 24 Themis rotated. Differences in intensity at different wavelengths helped researchers determine the makeup of the asteroid’s surface.

Researchers were surprised to find ice and carbon-based compounds evenly distributed on 24 Themis. More specifically, the discovery of ice is unexpected because surface ice should be short lived on asteroids, which are expected to be too warm for ice to survive for long.

The distance between this asteroid and the sun is about three times greater than between Earth and the sun.

Researchers will continue testing various hypotheses to explain the presence of ice. Perhaps most promising is the possibility that 24 Themis might have preserved the ice in its subsoil, just below the surface, as a kind of “living fossil” or remnant of an early solar system that was generally considered to have disappeared long ago.

‘Scientists Say Ice Lurks In Asteroid’s Cold Heart’

Scientists say they have detected water-ice and carbon-based organic compounds on the surface of an asteroid.

“For a long time the thinking was that you couldn’t find a cup’s worth of water in the entire asteroid belt,” said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. “Today we know you not only could quench your thirst, but you just might be able to fill up every pool on Earth – and then some.”

“The study’s findings are particularly surprising because it was believed that Themis, orbiting the sun at “only” 479 million kilometers (297 million miles), was too close to the solar system’s fiery heat source to carry water ice left over from the solar system’s origin 4.6 billion years ago.” JPL said. Flip-flops washed ashore near the Arctic Circle

“We saw flip-flops washing ashore on these islands in far northern Norway near the Arctic Circle,” said Cousteau, an environmentalist.

“People don’t wear flip-flops in the Arctic, at least not if they’re sane.”

Half a million volunteers around the world retrieved 10,239,538 pieces of trash from our ocean, lakes and waterways in a single day, September 19, 2009. The trash weighed about 3.4 million kg (7.4 million pounds), a tiny fraction of the total marine litter. Most of marine trash starts on land.

Highlights from The 2009 International Coastal Cleanup

Volunteers around the world covered 14,827 miles, more than six times the length of the Mississippi river, and found:

  • 336 marine animals, including 138 birds, entangled in marine debris 120 of the animals were still alive and released. Fishing line and nets were some of the most dangerous items, trapping over 200 animals
  • 512,517 cups, plates, forks, knives and spoons enough to provide a full set of dinnerware to over 100,000 people
  • 8,881 bottles of oil/lube during the cleanup. This is the amount that would be used to change the oil in nearly 12,000 mid-sized cars
  • More than 40 percent of all trash was collected in the United States
  • About 20 percent of the garbage collected threatened public health, and most debris were a threat to marine animals.

What If:
What if the same number of volunteers removed  the same amount of trash from the ocean every day, instead of just one day of the year?
It wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference.

Why NOT?
For three reasons:

  • First, the amount of litter retrieved would still constitute only a tiny fraction of the overall trash in the world’s waterway.
  • Third, nearly all of the sewage, agricultural, industrial, chemical/toxic pollution that enter the waterways dissolve in the water and become invisible.

The Problem?

To stop the trash entering our oceans and waterways, you have to stop producing waste. There’s no other formula that works.

The source of our oceans’ grave illnesses are the system of exponential growth economy, that cannot thrive without generating mountains of harmful waste. You cannot stop the oceans from dying without first changing the economy from its current state, into an eco-centered Oikonomia.

How Effective is the Work Done by Ocean Conservancy?

Coca-Cola, the Dow Chemical and the likes that have embedded  Ocean Conservancy ares the Praetorian Guards of the predatory economic system. It’s difficult to see how those companies would seriously act against their own monetary interests.
