FEWW anticipates more earthquakes measuring 6+ to strike Japan Region in 2009

Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported an earthquake measuring 6.5 striking Ishigakijima Kinkai area, SW Ryukyu Islands, Japan region at a depth of 10km on  17 Aug 2009 at 19:11 JST ( 10:11UTC).

USGS reported the event as measuring 6.4Mw [Event ID: us2009kkay] followed by an aftershock of magnitude 5.5 [Event ID: us2009kkaz.]

4th Powerful Quake Strikes Japan Region

Magnitude 6.8 Quake Strikes Ryukyu Islands, Japan

FEWW Moderators had predicted more powerful earthquakes in the region last week, and now believe as many as 10 additional magnitude 6+ quakes could yet strike the region in coming weeks

FEWW Moderators also believe there is a strong probability (0.8+) that the submarine Unnamed Volcano located East of Taiwan at 24.00N, 121.83E could erupt in 2009. [See previous comment.]

Powerful Earthquake Strikes Near Izu Islands, Japan

Magnitude 7.1 Quake Occurs Near Izu Islands, Japan Region

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1Mw occurred about 165km W of Hachijo-jima, Izu Islands, Japan, USGS reported, striking at a depth of 303.1km at 10:55:56 UTC.

Japan’s Meteorological agency said there was NO tsunami threat caused by this earthquake.

According to Reuters News Agency, quoting the national broadcaster, NHK, some high-speed train services were briefly suspended, while the tracks were checked, but no damage was reported.

This event raises the probability of FEWW forecast for Tokyo region to about 0.9 (86%).

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake resistant construction. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake and tsunami occurred in the Japan region 92 km northwest of the location of this earthquake on March 21, 1982 (UTC), with estimated population exposures of 48,000 at intensity VIII and 170,000 at intensity VII, with no reported fatalities. On July 12, 1993 (UTC), a magnitude 7.7 earthquake and tsunami occurred near the Hokkaido Nansei-Oki, Japan, region 360 km west of the location of this earthquake, with estimated population exposures of 4,000 at intensity VIII and 84,000 at intensity VII, resulting in an estimated 230 fatalities. Recent earthquakes in this area have caused, landslides and fires that may have contributed to losses. USGS.
