FITOW affects at least 12 million people in E China

Torrential rains brought by Typhoon FITOW continued to batter Shanghai City and Zhejiang Province in eastern China, submerging roads, causing rivers to overflow and inundating tens of thousands of homes in the region.

“From Saturday to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Zhejiang saw average precipitation of 201mm, with 717mm in worst-hit Yuyao City, according to the Zhejiang provincial hydrological bureau,” said a report.

Typhoon Death and Damage Toll

The typhoon’s death toll in China reached at least 6 on Monday, with four others reported missing.

The storm has affected more than seven million people in 11 cities in Zhejiang province alone, causing direct economic losses of 12.4 billion yuan ($2 billion), officials said.

Ningbo City received a record 390mm of rain between Saturday and  Monday, said the report.

FITOW made landfall in Fujian Province, south of Zhejiang, early on Monday, bringing torrential rains and causing widespread flooding  to east China.

Shanghai was also heavily affected. FITOW dumped about 153 mm of rain, the highest in a single day since 1961, between 8 pm Monday and 12 am Tuesday.

“A 15-meter-long flood prevention wall on the Huangpu River, which flows through the city, collapsed on Tuesday, flooding nearby residential houses,” said the report.

TS Agatha Strikes Guatemala, Kills 13

Agatha, the First Pacific Tropical Storm of 2010, Slams into Guatemala, Killing 13 People

TS Agatha struck Guatemala’s Pacific coast close to the Mexican border killing at least 13 people in Guatemala and El Salvador

Guatemalan government declared a state of emergency as torrential rain pummeled the Central American country, triggering mudslides that buried homes, cut off roads and threatened to destroy much of the nation’s coffee crop.

At least four people were killed when mudslide buried their home near Alomolonga, about 200 west of the capital, Guatemala City, according to government sources.

U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm could dump about 50cm of rain over Guatemala, El Salvador and southeastern Mexico, and possibly as much as 65cm in some areas, leading to flash floods and mudslides.

NOAA Said:

Rains will be increasing well in advance of Ida across the central and eastern gulf coast, but will become steadier and heavier later today into Tuesday.  Total storm accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated maximum storm totals of 8 inches, are possible through Tuesday from the central and eastern gulf coast northward into the eastern portions of the Tennessee valley and the southern Appalachians.

A dangerous storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 4 to 6 feet above ground level along the coast near and to the east of where the center makes landfall. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

FEWW Moderators forecast that  Ida had a more than 1 in 4 chance  [P≥0.25] of redeveloping into a hurricane-force storm.

At 05:15 UTC Sun Nov 8, 2009  [11:15 PM CST Sat Nov 7] NOAA reported that data from its buoy 42056, located in the NW Caribbean Sea, approximately 195 km (120 miles)  ESE of Cozumel, Mexico, had reported  a 1-minute sustained wind of about 120km/h (75 mph), which indicated Ida has once a again become a hurricane.

FEWW Moderators further believe that Hurricane Ida, could strengthen to a Category 3A hurricane on the FEWW Hurricane Scale [Cat 3 on Saffir-Simpson scale] within the next 24-48 hours.

With 30-km hurricane force winds radii, and tropical storm force winds extending 220 km from the center, hurricane IDA is currently a compact hurricane.

Mirinae Carved a Path of Death and Mayhem in Vietnam

Tropical Cyclone Mirinae Left a Trail of Death and Destruction Behind in Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia

At Least 117 dead, hundreds injured, thousands of homes destroyed or damaged, thousands of hectares of rice and other croplands ruined.

Typhoon Mirinae killed at least 25 people in Philippines, with several others reported missing, after making landfall on October 30, 2009. The storm damaged about 15,000 structures, mostly houses, affecting about 100,000.

Mirinae temporarily lost its sting and weakened to a tropical depression as it passed over Luzon.

On November 2, 2009 it made another land fall in Vietnam’s central coastal areas as a tropical storm. It triggered severe flooding killing at least 90 people with 11 others reported as missing, and at least 60 injured, according to the officials.

More than 80,000 people were evacuated.

“Most of the victims were because of serious floods that hit the provinces of Phu Yen, Binh Dinh and Gia Lai in particular,” an official said.

Some 338 mm (13 inches) of rain fell in Vietnam’s central regions, according to the country’s national disaster committee, destroying or damaging about 2,600 homes and up to 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of farmland.

“Rain is not very heavy now but several areas in our province are seriously flooded,” an official said.

Mirinae left two people dead in Cambodia.

In September, TS Ketsana, one of Vietnam’s worst disasters in recent years, left about 165 people dead with hundreds more injured. It unleashed severe floods, inundated many thousands of homes and damaged thousands of hectares of ready to harvest rice paddies and croplands.

On 29 October 14:45 UTC Typhoon Mirinae  was located at near 15.6N,  128.7E, approximately 890 km (480 nm) east of Manila, Philippines, tracking westward at a forward speed of about 22 km/h (12 knots).  It’s maximum significant wave height was estimated at 11 meter (33 feet).

Typhoon MIRINAE Status
On 29 October 03:45 UTC Typhoon Mirinae  was located at 15.8N, 131.4E, about 1200km (650nm) east of Manila, Philippines, tracking westward at a forward speed of 27 km/h (15knots). It’s maximum significant wave height was estimated at 10 meter (30 feet).

The poleward arm of Typhoon MIRINAE stretches out like an umbilical cord to meet the remnants of LUPIT circling to the east of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. It seems like the task LUPIT failed to perform is now passed on to MIRINAE. Will she succeed wreaking more havoc on the fatally injured  Manila, Luzon and the Philippines? Will she be the “mercy” typhoon?

Morakot dumps record 2,500mm of rain on parts of Taiwan

In Taiwan, typhoon Morakot dumped a record 2,500 mm (100 inches) of rain on Pingtung County,  officials said Tuesday, causing severe flooding in at least three coastal towns and a dozen more villages.

The storm triggered the worst flooding in Taiwan in living memory, killing at least 50 people and injuring dozens more. About 60 people were reported missing, with another 400 – 600 people unaccounted for.

In China, Morakot has affected up to 12 million people in four coastal  provinces, killing at least 10 people with dozens more injured. The storm destroyed a many as 10,000 homes, reports said.

Slow-Moving Typhoon Morakot Soakes Taiwan

After the slow-moving typhoon Morakot made landfall in Tawian, it soaked the southern part of the island with heavy rain between August 3 and 9, 2009, generating deadly landslides. The largest slide occurred in the southern mountains of Taiwan.

This image of the rainfall accumulation along Morakot’s path through the western Pacific is based on estimates from the near-real-time, Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis, which is produced by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The analysis depends on data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite. Increasing storm intensity (beginning with Tropical Depression) is indicated by darker shades of red. Morakot intensified to Category 2 strength prior to landfall. Highest rainfall totals (greater than 900 millimeters, or about 34 inches) are dark blue, and they are concentrated over the mountains of southern Taiwan.
