New storm projected to pass near NJ disaster coastline Wednesday
Mandatory evacuation order has been issued for low lying areas in Brick Township, N.J.
A nor’easter is expected to bring winds of 60-70 mph, several inches of rain, which would trigger flooding along the coast line, and 4-6 inches of snow to Pennsylvania and New York, forecasters said.

“Prepare for more outages!” NWS has warned residents in the region. “Stay indoors. Stock up again.”
- SANDY claimed more than 100 lives in 10 states.
- About 1.5 million customers in New York state and NJ are still without power, a week after the storm.

NSW, Australia
- Three local government areas in NWS, Australia have been declared natural disaster zones following a massive fire that has been raging in northern NSW for two weeks, reports said.
- The 51,000-hectare blaze has consumed large swaths of national parks, state forests and private land across Armidale Dumaresq, Walcha and Kempsey, said a report.

Superstorm SANDY as it plowed into the U.S. Atlantic Coast. The superstorm caused much destruction across 15 states and cut power to at least 8.5 million customers affecting an estimated 65 million people.

Cyclone NILAM
- INDIA: Cyclone NILAM brought heavy rain and a storm surge to southern India, destroying thousands of homes displacing 150,000 people.
- Sri Lanka. Flooding in Sri Lanka caused by the cyclone displaced about 70,000 others.
- The storm left at least a dozen people dead and many injured in the region.

Superstorm SANDY dumps enough snow to keep your heads buried
The progress of collapse would be swift, cruel and unceremonious [“abrupt, brutal and grisly.”]
Superstorm SANDY
- Hurricane-force winds of up to 145 km/h (90MPH) were recorded as SANDY slammed into NJ shore.
- “The devastation is unthinkable,” New Jersey Governor said after viewing photos of the New Jersey coast. “The idea … that you see homes [ripped from their foundation and tossed] in the middle of Route 35 southbound and northbound is just unfathomable,” he told reporters.
- SANDY knocked out electricity to more 8 million homes and businesses [figure released by the U.S. Department of Energy,] affecting an estimated 65 million people across 17 states.
- “New Jersey, New York in particular have been pounded by this storm. Connecticut has taken a big hit,” said the Disaster President. “This storm is not yet over.”
- The White House has declared the States of New Jersey and New York as major disaster areas, having issued states of emergency declaration for New Hampshire, Virginia, Delaware, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, District of Colombia, New York, Massachusetts and Maryland.
- Thousands of homes and businesses have been inundated, many destroyed by flooding, high winds aor other storm related disasters.
- A large fire, possibly caused by downed powerlines, destroyed 80 – 100 homes in Breezy Point, on the Rockaway barrier island, in NYC’s borough of Queens, reports said.
- Garrett County in Maryland has reported 20 inches of icy snow.
- The storm reached as far inland as the state of Ohio.
- The massive storm has forced cancellation of at least 16,000 flights to and from the affected region thus far.
- “To describe it as looking like pictures we’ve seen of the end of World War Two is not overstating it. The area was completely leveled. Chimneys and foundations were all that was left of many of these homes,” New York Mayor said.
- Blizzard warnings were issued by NWS for West Virginia, western Maryland, eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and western North Carolina after Sandy converged with a cold weather system.
- Storm surge buried about three-quarters of Hoboken [pop: ~50,000], NJ under several feet of water.
- Atlantic City remained in an official state of emergency, as of posting, with a 6 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew in effect.
- Death toll from SANDY has reached about 120, including 70 in the Caribbean and 20 in NYC [Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York state, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Toronto have reported up to 30 deaths due to the storm.]
- Pelting the region with hail, snow, and rain, SANDY “continued to whip southern Ontario with winds,” where a warning for gusts of up to 100 km/h remained in place, said a report.
- Meanwhile, the “Antichrist” and “Mammon” put campaigning on hold for a second day.

“Early season” snowstorm surges south and east across the U.S.
A powerful early season snow storm is forecast to bring light to heavy snow, freezing temperatures and strong winds to the north-central Plains today. Snow will expand to the central Plains and the northern Rockies on Friday and Saturday, NOAA forecasters said.
- Forecasters in several locations are calling for overnight low temperatures in the 20s that will bring an end to the growing season. A hard freeze with temperatures in the 20s is expected through 9 a.m. Friday in western South Dakota and northeast Wyoming. Freezing overnight temperatures are also expected in parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.
- The cold front is expected to move into much of the Eastern United States and the Deep South.
- Hard Freeze Warnings, Freeze Warnings, Hazardous Weather Outlook, and various winter-weather watches and advisories are in effect across much of the country.

China. Landslide death toll in Yiliang County, located in SW China’s Yunnan province, has climbed to at least 19, including 18 primary school children.
- Eight-hundred residents were relocated after the landslide.
- Yiliang was struck by a cluster of earthquakes on September 7, which left 81 people dead and 800 others injured, said a report.

South Africa. Anglo American Platinum, world’s largest platinum producer, has fired 12,000 striking South African miners after a protracted strike over wages, reports said.
- Clashes between striking miners and police left one worker dead.
- Some 34 miners were shot dead by the “post-apartheid” police in August.

Severe to Exceptional drought levels increase by more than 1 percent
Moderate to Exceptional drought levels (D1 to D4 on U.S. Drought Monitor scale) increased to 65.45 percent, up from 64.82 percent a week ago, while Severe to Exceptional drought levels (D2 to D4) covered 42.12 percent of Contiguous U.S., an increase of more than 1 percent.

JELAWAT Intensifies to a Super Typhoon with 265kph Winds
Super Typhoon JELAWAT, described as “violent,” is currently packing maximum sustained winds of about 265 kilometer per hour (kph), with wind gusts exceeding 325 kph, moving NNW in the Philippines Sea at forward speeds of about 12kph.
- The Super Storm could top maximum sustained winds of 280kph in the next 12 hours, according to models.

- California, USA. A wildfire 50 miles east of San Diego has destroyed at least 3 dozen buildings including 20 houses, threatening more homes and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate.
- At least a dozen other homes have reportedly been damaged by the fire.
- The 3,000-acre blaze may have started in Mexico, officials said.
- Philippines Sea. Typhoon EWINIAR (TY 19W), currently positioned NNW of Mariana Islands, is heading north towards Tokyo, Japan with sustained winds of about 75kph.

Washington, USA. Several wildfires burning in Central Washington are threatening to merge into a ‘monster blaze,’ authorities said.
- About 1,150 homes are threatened by two of the fires, the Table Mountain Fire and Wenatchee River Complex, which have forced at least 2,000 people to evacuate.
- The largest fire, the Wenatchee Complex, has grown to about 70 square miles, threatening about 500 homes and other structures.
- “The Wenatchee Complex is the result of an extensive, severe lightning storm which occurred the evening of Saturday, September 9, 2012. Lightning strikes were reported to have started [hundreds of] individual fires.” Inciweb reported.
- Table Mountain Fire is threatening about 650 homes.
- Fueled by warm temperatures, very low humidity and winds, the fires have so far consumed about 140 square miles on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range.
- Smoke from the fires is causing hazardous air quality in Ellensburg, Wenatchee, Spokane, Pullman, Clarkston and elsewhere across the state.
- A total of about 5,000 fire and emergency personnel are deployed.

Utah, USA. Gov. Herbert has declared a state of emergency in Santa Clara after flooding caused extensive damage to homes and businesses.
- Santa Clara is located about 270 miles south of Salt Lake City.
Florida. Federal government has denied a request by the Florida Gov. to declare the state a presidential major disaster area following the damage caused by Hurricane ISAAC late August.
- The storm reportedly caused about $40million damage across 7 counties in Florida, especially Palm Beach.
Alaska. Alaska’s governor has declared a state disaster for communities worst-hit by recent storms, forcing residents in Talkeetna area to evacuate, a report said.
- “Flooding is causing problems over a wide swath of Alaska, from Talkeetna, near the base of Mount McKinley in the Mat-Su Borough, to the port town of Seward, 175 miles to the south on the Kenai Peninsula.”

US Drought Disaster list joined by 92 additional counties across 9 states
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designated 92 counties across eight states as primary and contiguous disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought.
- The states are Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Drought has set yet another record high in the 12-year data, U.S. Drought Monitor reported. Nearly two-thirds (64.82 percent) of Contiguous United States (54.25 percent of the country) is now in moderate drought or worse, the largest percentage ever recorded at that level.

USDA has designated about 400 additional counties across 14 states as both primary and contiguous disaster areas due to drought, excessive heat.
- The states are Alabama, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
- As of September 12, 2012 USDA has designated 2,341 unduplicated counties across the country as agricultural disaster areas due to drought.

Torrential rain dumped by Hurricane ISAAC, now downgraded to a tropical depression, threatened to burst Lake Tangipahoa Dam in Mississippi, forcing evacuation of about 60,000 people in Louisiana and Mississippi, leaving large areas flooded and more than a million without power, reports said.

- Tennessee, USA. Gov Haslam has declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Tennessee following Sunday’s flooding rains.
- Rep. Matthew Hill has submitted a formal request to Gov. Haslam asking that Washington County and Johnson City be declared disaster areas, reports said.
- Arkansas. Gov Beebe has declared a state of emergency due to Arkansas’s severe drought, as ranchers feed supplies continue running critically low.
- The declaration authorizes issuance of special permits to transport round bales of hay on controlled highways for 30 days, reports said.

- Torrential rains triggered severe flooding throughout July, destroying or damaging thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, factories and other public infrastructure, inundating tens of thousands of hectares of crops and leaving about quarter a million people homeless.
- The floods have contaminated drinking water in the affected areas and exacerbated the country’s food shortages.

- China. Up to a million people evacuated as Typhoons Saola and Damrey strike east China. Typhoon Damrey, the 10th typhoon of the year, struck east China’s Jiangsu province, while Typhoon Saola targeted Fujian province with rainstorms, punching gale force winds and forcing about a million people to evacuate their homes. Up to a third of a million people have since been relocated.
- The storms also affected Shandong and Zhejiang provinces.
