Significant Quakes, Aftershocks Hit Chile, Ecuador, Japan, Vanuatu

Posted by feww on April 18, 2016

Powerful earthquake, aftershocks devastate coastal areas of Ecuador

A M7.8 quake and its aftershocks have devastated multiple towns and communities in Ecuador. The death toll from the earthquake and aftershocks has now reached about 370, and could rise further.

Additionally, more than 2,000 people have been injured, many of them seriously.

The worst affected region is the coastal province of Manabi; however, the full extent of damage remains unknown, as of posting.

Hundreds of aftershocks have rocked the disaster zone including at least three that measured between 5.4Mw and 5.6Mw.

Japan Deadly Earthquakes

Dozens of significant aftershocks continue to rattle the disaster area in Kyushu, Japan.

Up to 200,000 people have been evacuated following the two deadly quakes that have killed dozens of people, and left thousands more injured.

The quakes and aftershocks have destroyed or damaged more than 3,000 houses. Bridges, tunnels, roads and large sections of highways have also been destroyed.

Ground movements of up to 2 meters have been reported, apparently due to a new active fault line!

Up to a quarter of a million households are without power, natural gas, or water.

Serious food and water shortages have been reported. Piles of garbage are posing a health threat throughout the disaster area.

Dozens of Aftershocks Hit Napa County

More than a 100 aftershocks of all magnitudes have struck southern Napa County following a 6.0Mw quake that struck on August 24, causing an estimated $1billion in damages and injuring about 200 people.

Centered at 38.182°N, 122.302°W the largest aftershock  so far measured 3.9Mw striking at a depth of 11.7km (7.3mi), said USGS/EHP.

Another cluster of of more than 200 shocks has occurred near Geysers, California.

FIRE-EARTH Earthquake Forecasts for California

FIRE-EARTH Science Team has suspended its research on California seismicity to protest Internet censorship, Google’s manipulation of  information, theft of FIRE-EARTH intellectual property and other reasons, as previously stated.

The Team has suspended its research also on Japan seismicity due to resurgence of militarism in that country and other reasons, as previously stated.

No End Seen to China Quake Aftershocks

Posted by feww on May 16, 2008

Another major earthquake in the making?

China Earthquake: Large Cluster of Powerful Shocks!

  • Mainshock: 7.9 Magnitude – Monday, May 12, 2008 at 02:28:01 [time at epicenter]
  • Latest aftershock: 5.5 Magnitude – Friday, May 16, 2008 at 01:25:48 PM [time at epicenter]
  • Total number of major aftershocks: 59 [and continuing]

The last 4 aftershocks have strengthened in magnitude from 4.3 to 5.5 Mw. Is there another major shock in the making?

This map shows the predicted (theoretical) travel times, in minutes, of the compressional (P) wave from the earthquake location to points around the globe. The heavy black lines shown are the approximate distances to the P-wave shadow zone (103 to 140 degrees). (Caption: USGS)

Shadow zone

The shadow zone is the area of the earth from angular distances of 104 to 140 degrees from a given earthquake that does not receive any direct P waves. The shadow zone results from S waves being stopped entirely by the liquid core and P waves being bent (refracted) by the liquid core.

Did you know?

Through measuring how P and S waves travel through the earth and out the other side, a seismic wave shadow zone was discovered in about 1910. From the lack of S waves and a great slowing of the P wave velocity (by about 40%) it was deduced that the outer core is made of liquid. The shadow zone also defined the diameter of the core.

[If the outer core was not made of liquid, Earth could probably breakup into several pieces as a result of a v. large earthquake! FEWW]
