Global Disasters/ Significant Events
- Republic of Niger. Flooding in Niger could destroy its main rice harvest, reports said.
- Floods have already claimed dozens of lives since the annual rainy season began.
- Niger produces about 130,000 tons of rice a year.
- “Most of the rainy season rice crop, estimated at over 80,000 metric tons, risks being destroyed this year,” a Malian official said.
- United States. The Department of Commerce has declared Fisheries Disasters in Northeast, Alaska, and Mississippi.
- Northeast – Several key fish stocks in the Northeast groundfish fishery are not rebuilding and further cuts are expected in 2013. More information here.
- Alaska – Low returns of Chinook salmon to the Yukon River, Kuskokwim River, and Cook Inlet have resulted in a fishery resource disaster have caused a continuation of the Yukon River commercial fishery failure in 2010 – 2012, a Kuskokwim River commercial fishery failure in 2011 – 2012, and a Cook Inlet commercial fishery failure in 2012. - Mississippi – Impacted by the massive freshwater impacts from the historic flooding in the lower Mississippi River in the spring of 2011, a commercial fishery failure has been declared for the Mississippi oyster fishery and the state’s blue crab fishery. More information here.
- North Korea. Death toll from recent floods in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has risen to 300, with 600 others reported as missing and many injured, reports said.
- “The floods between mid-June and late August destroyed 87,280 houses and affected roughly 298,050 residents, damaging farmland and social infrastructure such as electric cables, coal mines and railways, according to the KCNA, said a report.
- Pakistan. Flooding in Pakistan has left hundreds of people dead, injured or missing. Thousands of others are left homeless.
- Ryukyu Islands. Super Typhoon SANBA (TY 17W), near 23.5ºN, 129.1ºE, continues to intensifies moving north (345 degrees) toward Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands.

Shell to drill Chukchi Sea, violating air-quality standards
“EPA said it granted Shell a compliance order allowing the company’s fleet to emit pollutants at levels beyond limits set in a major permit issued to the company in January,” said a report.
That preliminary drilling is imminent, said Shell’s Alaska spokesman, Friday. “It’s likely to begin this weekend.”

China Earthquakes Update
- Eighty people are confirmed dead and at least 820 others injured after two earthquakes struck SW China, according to official news.
- An unspecified number of people are missing, and the death toll could climb.
- The quakes struck a region near Yiliang county in Yunnan and Weining county in Guizhou Province on Friday.
- “More than 200,000 people in Yunnan were relocated as more than 6,600 houses collapsed and another 430,000 damaged. Direct economic losses were estimated at 3.5 billion yuan (552 million U.S. dollars), according to the civil affairs department,” said a report.
- More than 11,700 houses in Guizhou province have also been damaged.
- At least 300 schools in the quake zone have also been damaged.

361 districts in 31 of Thailand’s 76 provinces have been declared cold spell disaster areas
Thai government has declared the entire northwestern province of Nakhon Ratchasima and 329 districts in 30 other provinces as cold spell disaster areas.

- Thailand. The government has declared all 32 districts in the northwestern province of Nakhon Ratchasima (pop: 2.7 million) and 329 districts in 30 other provinces as cold spell disaster zones.
- An estimated 7 million people in more than 25,000 villages and towns have been affected by the cold spell since late last year.
- In December, 8,724 villages in 11 provinces were declared disaster areas due to cold weather.
Other Global Disasters
- Mumbai, India. The Maharashtra state government has declared a state of emergency in the city of Mumbai as min temperatures fell to a record low of 11ºC, officials said.
- Weather officials said the temperature was likely to fall to 10 degrees Celsius or lower in the next few days.
- “I have been living in Mumbai since 70 years and I have never seen it become so cold. The last time I saw so many random people light fires infront of their house it turned out to be a riot,” said a local.
- By late December 2011, cold weather had claimed at least 140 lives in northern India as temperatures dipped 5 degrees Centigrade below normal.
- Alaska, USA. The small fishing town of Cordova in the Prince William Sound, Alaska, remains partially buried in about 3.5m of snow.
- Town officials declared the snowbound city a disaster area last week.
- Cordova normally receives about 2.5m of snow throughout the winter, according to NWS.
- The drifts are reportedly more than 6m (18 feet) high.
