M6.5 quake strikes near Atka, Alaska

Strong quake measuring 6.5Mw struck about 77km (48mi) SSW of Atka, Alaska at 02:32 UTC, Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

The quake was centered at 51.592°N 174.760°W, and struck about 39.9km (24.8mi) deep, USGS/EHP reported.

NO tsunami reported.

Two significant aftershocks followed the mainshock, as of posting.

• 5.5Mw + 78km SSW of Atka, Alaska 2013-09-04 13:16:31 UTC+09:00 D=34.6 km
• 5.2Mw + 80km SW of Atka, Alaska 2013-09-04 14:15:56 UTC+09:00 D=44.8 km

The quake followed similar size shocks that struck Izu Islands, Japan Region and Bella Bella, Canada since late Tuesday.

Powerful Quake Hits Fox Islands, Alaska

UPDATE at 04:25UTC: The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has now lifted the Tsunami Warning that was issued earlier.

Magnitude 7.4 Quake Strikes 64 km (39 miles) SW of Amukta Island, Alaska

The quake has since been downgraded to magnitude 7.2Mw, but a Tsunami Warning issued by the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center is still in place, as of posting:

The Tsunami Warning continues in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from Unimak Pass, Alaska (80 miles NE of Dutch Harbor) to Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles W of Adak).

Two Strong Quakes Strike Bering Sea

Quakes measuring up to 6.6 and 6.3Mw struck about 470 km SW of Gambell, Alaska

The mainshock was preceded by a foreshock measuring up to 4.6Mw.

The mainshock was centered at 60.644°N, 177.901°W and struck at a depth of of about 12km on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 23:11:44UTC.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any tsunami warning, watch or advisory.

According to news reports Tsunami Warning Center officials in Anchorage, Alaska, did not feel the shocks.

Two powerful Earthquakes Measuring 6.5 and 6.6 Mw Strike Fox Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska

The first earthquake a magnitude 6.5 quake struck on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 05:37:21 UTC at a depth of 18 km, followed by a swarm of smaller aftershocks and a second powerful shock measuring 6.6Mw, which struck some 15 hours later.

An earlier quake, also measuring M 6.6, struck the same region about 250km WNW of the recent cluster on October 2, 2009.
