Tornadoes Wreak Widespread Destruction in Texas

More than 5,000 homes may have been damaged or destroyed by tornadoes, while at least 17 people were killed across the storm battered areas.

Arkansas has declared a state of emergency after at least three people were  killed in severe weather.

The storms were forecast to roll into Alabama before moving north toward Michigan.

Up to 20 million people are under some risk of severe weather, including tornadoes, strong winds, rainstorm and hail, according to NWS.

Millions more are under a flood warning or watch.

Crop Disasters Declared in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Puerto Rico

Extreme weather and climatic disasters destroy crops in multiple areas across two states and Puerto Rico

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 13 counties in the states of Oklahoma as Arkansas as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by heavy rains, flash flooding and flooding that occurred from Dec. 26, 2015, through Jan. 5, 2016. 

Those counties are:

• Oklahoma. Adair, Cherokee, Haskell, LeFlore, Latimer, McCurtain, Muskogee, Pushmataha and Sequoyah counties.
• Arkansas. Crawford, Polk, Scott and Sebastain counties.

USDA has also designated 27 municipalities in Puerto Rico as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought.

Those municipalities are: 

• Puerto Rico. Aguas Buenas, Aibonito, Barranquitas, Bayamon, Caguas, Canovanas, Carolina, Cayey, Cidra, Coamo, Comerio, Corozal, Guaynabo, Gurabo, Humacao, Juncos, Las Piedras, Maunabo, Naguabo, Naranjito, Orocovis, Patillas, San Juan, San Lorenzo, Trujillo Alto, Vieques and Yabucoa municipalities.

All counties and municipalities listed above were designated crop disaster areas on March 23, 2016.

Louisiana Disaster Declaration Expanded

Louisiana disaster declaration to include 16 additional parishes

The White House has approved Louisiana governor’s request to expand the disaster declaration to include 16 additional parishes that have been devastated by destructive weather events.

Seven parishes in Louisiana were declared major disaster areas by the White House on Sunday including Bossier, Claiborne, Grant, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland and Webster parishes.

However, due to worsening damage caused by the severe storms and historic flooding, thousands of additional homes and businesses have sustained damage in more parishes.

The additional parishes are Beauregard, Bienville, Caddo, Caldwell, DeSoto, LaSalle, Livingston, Madison, Natchitoches, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Union, Vernon, Washington, West Carroll, and Winn.

3 More Arkansas Counties Declared Disaster Areas

Meanwhile, three additional Arkansas counties have been declared disaster areas by Gov. Hutchinson.

The addition of Columbia, Prairie, and Scott counties brings the total to 16.

Record rainfall and sever flooding inundated the state last week, causing substantial damage across the state, especially in the southeast.

The 16 counties so far declared disaster areas include Arkansas, Ashley, Bradley, Calhoun, Chicot, Cleveland, Columbia, Desha, Drew, Jefferson, Lincoln, Monroe, Ouachita, Phillips, Prairie and Scott.

Federal Emergency Declared for the State of Missouri amid Flood Disaster

• Dozens Dead in Missouri, S. Illinois amid Extreme Rain Event.

• Tornadoes, Flooding and other  Extreme Weather Events have left at least 80 people dead, thousands of homes and businesses destroyed or damaged in central and southern U.S. since late December.

“When you’re coming over historic highs from the beginning of time, we kept records by four and five feet,” said Missouri Gov. Nixon. “When you’re seeing 55 close, seeing a house that’s floated, a full house that’s floated into the highway 30 bridge and blowing up, it’s almost as if you’re living on some other planet.”

The White House declared a Federal Emergency for the State of Missouri due to the emergency conditions in the areas affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding beginning on December 22, 2015, and continuing.

The areas worst affected by the ongoing disasters are the counties of Audrain, Barry, Barton, Bollinger, Boone, Butler, Callaway, Camden, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Cedar, Christian, Clark, Cole, Cooper, Crawford, Dallas, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Franklin, Gasconade, Greene, Hickory, Howard, Howell, Iron, Jasper, Jefferson, Laclede, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Madison, Maries, Marion, McDonald, Miller, Mississippi, Moniteau, Montgomery, Morgan, New Madrid, Newton, Oregon, Osage, Ozark, Pemiscot, Perry, Phelps, Pike, Polk, Pulaski, Ralls, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, St. Charles, St. Clair, St. Francois, St. Louis,  Ste. Gov. Nixon had requested the disaster declaration after touring areas devastated by flooding on Saturday.

Arkansas Gov. Hutchinson has now declared a total to 38 counties as disaster areas due to flooding and storm damage.

Those counties are Baxter, Benton, Boone, Bradley, Calhoun, Carroll, Chicot, Clay, Crawford, Desha, Drew, Faulkner, Franklin, Greene, Izard, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Little River, Logan, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Ouachita, Perry, Pike, Polk, Randolph, Scott, Searcy, Sebastian, Sevier, Stone, Washington, White and Yell.

Illinois Disaster Areas

Gov. Rauner has declared at least 12 counties in Central and Southern Illinois as disaster areas due to deadly flooding. Those counties are Alexander, Calhoun, Christian, Clinton, Douglas, Jackson, Jersey, Madison, Monroe, Morgan, Randolph and St. Clair.

Texas Disaster Areas

Texas Gov. Abbott declared a state of disaster in Collin, Dallas, Ellis and Rockwall counties last week following deadly tornadoes and storms that left multiple trails of devastation.

Deadly storms leave trails of destruction across southern and central U.S.

A massive storm system, described as “particularly dangerous,” packing high winds and spawning dozens of tornadoes, raked through the southern and central United States, killing about a dozen people and injuring dozens more.

SPC received hundreds of severe weather reports including 29 tornadoes, as of posting. Tornadoes, high wind and hail left trails of destruction across multiple states: Alabama,  Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

At least five people were killed in Mississippi, two in Tennessee and one in Arkansas, and dozens more injured across a large region spanning about 10 states, authorities said.

“The devastation is just unreal,” a police spokesman in Mississippi told reporters.

Deadly Tornadoes: State of Emergency Declared in Tennessee

Gov. Haslam approved the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency’s recommendation to go to a Level III State of Emergency, after storms moved across the state Wednesday night, killing at least two people.

At least four tornadoes touched down in Middle Tennessee, two in Wayne County, one in Perry County and one near the Smith/DeKalb County line, according to preliminary data received by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

“In Lutts, a lot of damage, some people trapped in a mobile home, some people trapped in a storm shelter, and houses and structural damage,” said Wayne County Sheriff. “We have a lot of injuries and we’re dispatching ambulances there now.”

SPC received hundreds of severe weather reports including 29 tornadoes (24 filtered), as of posting. Tornadoes left trails of destruction across multiple states: Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Illinois.

NWS Forecast:

The storm system that produced the severe weather outbreak on Wednesday will continue to move east on Thursday, but has diminished in strength. Isolated severe thunderstorms will still be possible from the Mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi Valley, with a more concentrated threat across parts of Alabama and Georgia.

Drought has destroyed at least 30 percent of the crops in 78 counties and parishes across the states of  Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, reported USDA.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 39 counties and parishes in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought. Those counties are:

• Texas. Arkansas Declared Federal Disaster Area

Arkansas Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4226)

The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Nebraska in the areas affected affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding during the period of May 7 to June 15, 2015.

Areas worst affected by the extreme weather events—severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding—include Crawford, Garland, Howard, Jefferson, Little River, Miller, Perry, Sebastian, and Sevier counties.

Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the territory and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

This is the 22nd Major Disaster Declaration proclaimed for a U.S. state/territory, so far this year. Additionally the federal government has issued three Fire Management Assistance Declarations.

State of Emergency Declared in Wyoming amid Floods, Mudslides

Severe weather, floods, mudslides, landslides… wreak havoc throughout Wyoming

Wyoming Gov. Mead has issued an Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency in response to flooding in the Cowboy State.

I am very concerned about the weather-related damage across Wyoming and the toll it is taking on our citizens and communities, said Governor Mead. Mudslides have closed some roads in Sunlight Basin near Cody, Wind River Canyon and Togwotee Pass and flooding has caused damage in Niobrara, Johnson and other counties.

Arkansas town evacuated as Red River rises

Small town of Garland City, located about 20 miles from in Texarkana, Arkansas, was evacuated early Friday, after Miller County emergency management officials issued a mandatory evacuation order for the town’s 250 residents.

Although the town’s levee had been weakened and was leaking, it had not failed, and the evacuation was ordered as a precaution, officials said.

Emergency management officials sounded a siren and went door-to-door to warn residents.

Disaster Declared in 31 Arkansas Counties after Floods

Arkansas Gov. declares disasters in four more counties affected by extreme rain events

Gov. Hutchinson has amended an earlier Disaster Proclamation for Arkansas adding to the disaster areas four more counties that are affected by extreme rain events and floods.

Those areas are Conway, Jefferson, Perry and Sebastian counties, bringing the total disaster areas to 31 across the state.

The disaster areas in the original Proclamation included Madison, Newton, Marion, Searcy, Izard, Independence, Franklin, Johnson, Pope, Scott, Yell, Polk, Montgomery, Garland, Sevier, Howard, Pike, Little River, Hempstead, Nevada, Ouachita, Chicot, Crawford, Miller, Lafayette, Logan and Faulkner counties.

Water levels continue to rise in disaster areas

“We are concerned with additional risks since the level of the water is continuing to rise in areas already affected,” said Gov. Hutchinson.

Flooding has severely impacted SW Arkansas and areas along the Arkansas River.

“Severe storms, flooding and tornadoes beginning May 8, 2015 and continuing caused great damage to private property and public-facilities in various jurisdictions in Arkansas; and Adverse circumstances have been brought to bear upon the citizens and public properties within the State,” he said, extending the Disaster Declaration to include 27 counties.

The disaster areas so far include the counties of Chicot, Crawford, Faulkner, Franklin, Garland, Hempstead, Howard, Independence, Izard, Johnson, Lafayette, Little River, Logan, Madison, Marion, Miller, Montgomery, Nevada, Newton, Ouachita, Pike, Polk, Pope, Searcy, Sevier, Scott and Yell.

At least 167 counties in Texas have have been affected by flooding.

Oklahoma

Governor Fallin has requested a federal disaster declaration for at least 13 counties severely affected by deadly storms and tornadoes.

Deadly Tornadoes: Disaster Declared in Texas, Iowa, Arkansas

Tornadoes kill 5, injure dozens, destroy/ damage hundreds of homes in U.S. mid-section

Governors in three states have declared States of Disaster Emergency, after a string of deadly tornadoes left trails of destruction across Texas, Arkansas, and Iowa on Monday, killing at least 5 people, leaving 3  missing and more than fifty others injured.

At least 25 tornadoes touched down in South Dakota, Iowa, Oklahoma and Texas on Sunday, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma. Three more tornadoes hit Iowas, Louisiana and North Carolina on Monday, reported SPC.

Gov. Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster in Texas counties hit in recent days by severe weather that’s included tornadoes, thunderstorms and heavy rains that brought flooding.

Texas Gov. Abbott declared a state of disaster Monday in Bosque, Clay, Denton, Eastland, Gaines, Montague and Van Zandt counties.

A tornado killed at least one person in the town of Cisco west of Fort Worth Saturday night. Another tornado killed at least two people in the East Texas town of Van Sunday night, damaging or destroying at least 100 homes.

“About 30 percent” of the Van community has bee damaged, said an official for Van Zandt County.

The town was hit by an EF3 tornado, with winds from 135 mph to 140 mph, said NWS.

Iowa Gov. Branstad issued a disaster declaration for Monday morning, a day after a tornado tore through Lake City.

Arkansas Gov. Hutchinson declared Franklin, Garland, Howard, Izard, Johnson, Montgomery, Newton, Pike, Pope and Searcy Counties a disaster area Monday afternoon.

At least two people were killed in the town of Nashville, Arkansas, with widespread damage reported throughout the region.

The storm dumped as much as 280mm of rain in some areas setting new daily records for rainfall and causing widespread flooding.

Saturday saw at least 53 tornadoes wreaking havoc across Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.

Some 155 tornadoes have touched down in the U.S. so far this month, bringing up the total for 2015 to at least 382, as of posting.

HIV Outbreak: Indiana Declares State of Emergency

Indiana Gov. Pence has declared a public health emergency after “the worst HIV outbreak in the state’s history.”

Pence said 79 cases had been confirmed, but “we expect that number to go up,” with more testing underway.

Every single confirmed case so far has been related to intravenous use of Opana, an opioid painkiller, said Pence.

“This is a very serious situation,” he said, adding that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had advised for a needle-exchange program to be set up.

“I’m prepared to make an exception to my long-standing opposition to needle-exchange programs,” said Pence. “This is a public health emergency driven by intravenous drug use.”

All of the HIV-infected cases so far detected were either in or connected to Scott County, near the Kentucky border, said a state health official.

Everyone who has tested positive for HIV has admitted to intravenous drug use, although some have also had sex with other users, said a public health nurse at Scott County Health Department.

Fallin Declares State of Emergency After Deadly Tornadoes

Oklahoma governor declared a state of emergency in 25 counties affected by tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and straight-line winds.

The twisters destroyed a mobile home park in suburban Sand Springs. At least one person was reported dead and scores of others injured with widespread damage reported across Oklahoma and Arkansas.

An EF-1 tornado spiraled through the suburb of Moore in Oklahoma City, where 24 people were killed by a tornado in May 2013.

Chile declares a state of emergency due to unprecedented deluge

Chile has declared a state of emergency in the northern regions of Atacama and Antofagasta after extreme rain events (EREs) left dozens of people dead or missing, forced thousands of others to flee their homes and closed copper-mining operations.

The EREs triggered an unprecedented flooding in the desert region, as rivers broke banks isolating numerous villages and communities.

The deluge in the north occurs as drought stricken southern Chile struggles with massive forest fires.

A powerful storm system generated eight tornadoes (SPC confirmed 7 twisters) striking Arkansas and Oklahoma on Wednesday, killing at least one person, injuring several others and causing EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN MOBILE HOME PARK NEAR HIGHWAY 51 AND 145 WEST AVENUE, according to reports received by Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

Another tornado swept through Sand Springs, Tulsa, damaging up to 100 buildings, while another twister in Moore, Oklahoma, damaged scores of buildings, tossing and overturning many cars and trucks, according to local reports.

Other tornadoes were reported in Cleveland and Cherokee counties, OK, while Arkansas reported at least 3 twisters in Benton, Madison and Carroll counties.

Flash floods plague Chile’s Atacama desert region

Flash floods Chile’s Atacama desert have cut off dozens of communities, leaving tens of  thousands of people without electricity or drinking water and forcing authorities to begin mass evacuations.

Torrential rains  in the Andes have unleashed destructive walls of water and mud down in the valleys below inundating communities.

The mining city of Copiapo (po. 160,000) is inundated, after the river running through it burst its banks, while the state of desert commune of Chañaral (pop. 14,000) has been described as “grave.”

Several people have reportedly lost their lives and dozens of others are missing throughout the region.

Authorities have declared a state of disaster and deployed the military to co-ordinate rescue operations, and reinstate civil order.

Saudi Arabia launches major military operation in Yemen

Saudi Arabia has launched a major military operation, backed by air strikes,  in Yemen against Houthi rebels, according to the Saudi ambassador in the US.

The envoy said Saudi Arabia had acted to “defend the legitimate government” of President Hadi, who fled his palace in Aden on Wednesday.

Explosions were reported in the capital Sanaa and its airport, while officials quoted by AFP news agency said at least 13 had been killed in one neighborhood.

Meantime, a senior Houthi rebel has warned that the Saudi aggression against Yemen  could set off a regional war, media reported.

Other parties that directly benefit from the Saudi aggression in Yemen are a Yemeni affiliate of Islamic State (formerly ISIL), and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), analysts say.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 13 counties in three  states—Arkansas, Iowa and and Nebraska—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by an late freeze, or severe hail.

White House Declares Federal Disaster in Arkansas (DR-4174)

White House declared a major disaster in the State of Arkansas  in the area affected by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding on April 27, 2014.

Faulkner County was severely impacted b y severe storms, deadly tornadoes, and flooding.

Damage surveys are continuing in other areas, and more counties and additional forms of assistance may be designated after the assessments are fully completed, said FEMA.

Dozens Killed in US as Tornado Attacks Continue

States of Emergency declared in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Georgia as up to 82 tornadoes strike  southern and eastern U.S.,  leaving trails of death and destruction in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee,  Georgia, and  Kentucky.

Deadly tornadoes, baseball-sized hail, and destructive winds continue to leave trails of death and destruction across large portions of southern and eastern U.S.

As many as 50 fatalities have been reported (unconfirmed), with hundreds more injured.

Up to 118 tornado reports have been sent to Storm Prediction Center since late Sunday.

Dozens of Tornadoes Attack Five Southern States, Killing at least 23 People

States of Emergency declared in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Georgia as up to 52 tornadoes swoop across the southern U.S.,  leaving trails of death and destruction in AL, MS, TN, GA and KY.

At least 23 people were killed in Alabama and Mississippi after tornadoes struck Monday evening. The  total number of fatalities are not yet confirmed.

The tornado attack follows another round deadly strike by twisters Sunday evening, spawned by the same massive storm system, which left more than two dozen people dead in Arkansas, Iowa and Oklahoma.

The extent of damage in Tupelo, Mississippi, was described as “devastating” by the mayor, after a tornado tore through the city, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and businesses.

“It’s a very serious situation … I am just encouraging everyone to stay inside and be weather aware. There is still a very real danger of another line coming through and people still need to be inside,” said Tupelo Mayor.

Severe Thunderstorms Spawning Deadly Tornadoes Kill at least Two Dozen People in Central U.S.

Gov. Sam Brownback declared a state of disaster emergency for Baxter Springs, Kansas Sunday evening.

At least a dozen fatalities reported in Arkansas, with many more injuries caused by up to 14 confirmed tornadoes.

Tornadoes have also claimed lives in other parts of America’s midsection.

• At least 30 tornadoes (29 confirmed) have swooped across six states, as of posting.

• Tornado reports received by SPC from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Mississippi.

• A twister hit Quapaw, Ottawa County, Okla., about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, killing at least two people and causing damage, according to the sheriff’s office. The extent of damage was unknown, as of posting.

• The tornado destroyed the fire station in Quapaw, and caused heavy damage to north end of the town.

• Arkansas Game and Fish HQ east of Mayflower has been heavily damaged, said SPC.

• A “mass casualty situation” has been reported by the Faulkner County Sheriff’s office, after a half-mile wide tornado touched down in Vilonia, AR.

• A massive tornado touched down west of Little Rock, AR, leaving a 30-mile path of destruction.

• Parts of Pulaski County were devastated with numerous homes completely destroyed, said the sheriff’s office.

• A powerful tornado damaged or destroyed numerous homes and several buildings in downtown Baxter Springs, Kansas. (Also unconfirmed reports of multiple deaths, 25 people injured.)

• Another tornado produced an intermittent damage path to the northeast of Hammond, Kansas, after toppling a grain elevator onto railroad tracks, overturning 6 rail cars.

• A tornado damaged or destroyed several houses in Saltillo, Arkansas.

• Numerous trees were uprooted in White County, AR.

• Town of Ferndale, AR, is one of the worst hit areas,  said the sheriff’s office.

Numerous reports of Damaging Winds and/or Destructive Hail have also been sent to the SPC from the above states as well as Texas, Missouri, Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Kentucky.

• Numerous trees and powerlines were down with  quarter size hail reported in Todd County, Kentucky. (The trees are down on cars and houses).

• Heavy damage to farmhouses and barns reported across Missouri.

• Thousands of trees, large and small, uprooted or snapped across Iowa.

• Trees blown onto powerlines and buildings damaged across Carroll, MO.  Quarter sized hail also reported.

• Farm animals reported missing in Lafayette, MO.

• Baseball size hail was smashing windows out of vehicles west of Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas.

• Large hail damaged many vehicles in Wood County, TX.

• “Tonight, I walked around what was only hours earlier a thriving neighborhood that is now gone. An entire neighborhood of 50 or so homes has been destroyed – many homes are completely gone except the foundation,”  U.S. Representative for Arkansas Tim Griffin told Reuters. “And there is more devastation like this in other parts of Arkansas.”

Another round of severe weather and heavy precipitation expected on Monday

The threat for severe weather will last overnight Sunday into Monday morning in the Central and Southern U.S. Another significant outbreak, that could include strong tornadoes, is possible Monday afternoon and night in the Mid-South and Lower Miss. Valley. Severe weather could also impact parts of the Mid/Upper Miss. and Ohio Valleys. Heavy rainfall in the Midwest and South could cause flooding.

Deadly Tornadoes Swoop on Central U.S., Oklahoma and Arkansas Declare Emergencies

A twister hit Quapaw, Ottawa County, Okla., about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, killing at least two people and causing damage, according to the sheriff’s office. The extent of damage was unknown, as of posting.

• The tornado destroyed the fire station in Quapaw, and caused heavy damage to north end of the town.

• Arkansas Game and Fish HQ east of Mayflower has been heavily damaged, said SPC.

• At least 17 confirmed tornado reports in six states were received by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), as of posting.

NWS has issued a Tornado Warning for Polk County, MO.

• A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR NORTH CENTRAL WHITE, WEST CENTRAL JACKSON AND SOUTH CENTRAL INDEPENDENCE COUNTIES, AR, UNTIL 915 PM CDT, April 27.

• AT 845 PM CDT, STORM SPOTTERS AND NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WERE TRACKING A CONFIRMED TORNADO WITH REPORTS OF DAMAGE. THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY TORNADO WAS LOCATED 6 MILES NORTHEAST OF STEPROCK, OR 17 MILES NORTHEAST OF SEARCY, MOVING NORTHEAST AT 45 MPH.

The national Weather Service (NWS) has also issued the following forecast.

High Risk of severe weather for Arkansas and adjacent areas

Severe weather will affect large portions of Central and Southern U.S. well into Sunday night. The greatest tornado risk (indicated by the High Risk area issued by the NWS Storm Prediction Center) will be centered on Arkansas, where a few strong and long-track tornadoes will be possible late into the night. Also, heavy rainfall could cause flooding in parts of the Miss. & Tenn. Valleys.

Tornadoes, high winds, massive hail and torrential rain pound U.S. South, Midwest

A ferocious storm front spawning at least 8 tornadoes,  high winds and torrential rains rolled through the U.S. South and Midwest leaving a trail of destruction and damage in its wake.

Missouri Declares a State of Emergency

Gov. Nixon has declared a statewide state of emergency as a widespread severe weather system continued to batter the state of Missouri with at least three tornadoes, torrential rain, huge hail and high winds, causing flooding and flash flooding.

The Governor ordered activation of the State Emergency Operations Center, and also activated the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan.

Tornado reports

The Storm prediction Center (SPC) at National Weather Service (NWS) received 8 confirmed reports of tornadoes in Texas, Missouri and Illinois, as well as nearly 200 reports of strong wind and hail.

Hail measuring at least the size of a quarter and as large as a softball hammered multiple areas along the storm path.

Tornadoes, high winds and rainstorm uprooted or damaged thousands of trees and downed power lines, ripping off roofs  and shattering windows across 6 states—Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri,  Illinois and Kentucky.

The storm system brought torrential rains causing flash flooding.

Deadly winter storm prompts State of Emergency declarations in Virgina, Arkansas…

The states of Emergency declarations followed similar proclamations by governors in the states of Delaware, New Jersey, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Virginia

Gov. McAulliffe declared a state of emergency as yet another deadly winter storm bore down on Virginia, forcing school closings and flight cancellations.

The National Weather Service (NWS) had forecast up to 10 inches of snow accumulations in northern Virginia.

Arkansas

Gov. Beebe declared a state of emergency for Arkansas after ice and snow blanketed much of the state on Monday.

Beebe said the severe storm had “caused great damage to private property and public facilities in various jurisdictions in Arkansas.”

Flight Cancellation and Delays
About 5,500 flight cancellations have been reported within, into, or out of the United States between Saturday and Monday (so far), in addition to more than 17,000 delays due to the massive storm system.

Hundreds more cancellations were reported for Tuesday, as of posting.

Deadly Storm
Road crashes due to icy conditions have left a number of people dead including a 13-year-old girl in southwest Missouri on Sunday, and a 32-year-old woman in Colorado, who was killed in a 120-vehicle pileup near Denver on Saturday, while scores of others were reportedly injured.

Other road deaths were reported in  Oklahoma Texas, Tennessee and Virginia on Monday.

Freezing weather from the Canadian border into Texas Monday plunged the mercury to record or near record lows in several places.

Deadly Snow Storm Threatens 32 States

States of Emergency Declared in Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, New Jersey…

The second snow storm in a week is forecast to dump up to a foot of snow across all or portions of at least 32 states. The deadly snow storm will be followed by yet another massive arctic blast that will bring life-threatening temperatures and frigid conditions to more than two-thirds of the country.

State of Disaster Emergency Declared in Kansas

Gov. Brownback has signed a state of disaster emergency declaration for Kansas for the entire state in response to a deadly storm, which continues to batter Kansas as it moves through the state.

Arkansas Declares a State of Emergency amid Widespread Power Outages

Tens of thousands of Arkansans were left without electricity on Tuesday, prompting Gov Beebe to declare a state of emergency.

“A severe winter weather system, beginning February 3, 2014, and continuing, has resulted in the loss of electric power and other utilities within the State of Arkansas, which will require utility companies and their crews to work long hours to restore such services as quickly as practicable …  Adverse circumstances have been brought to bear upon the citizens and public properties within the State …  [I’m authorized as] a state governor to declare a regional emergency during the duration of the emergency conditions, not to exceed thirty (30) days from the date of the initial declaration of emergency, and to exempt any motor carrier or driver operating a commercial motor vehicle to provide direct assistance in providing emergency relief during an emergency …” said Gov Beebe in his State of Emergency Proclamation.

Mississippi declares a State of Emergency amid Threat of Deadly Snow Storm

Gov. Bryant has declared a State of Emergency as a deadly snow storm threatens to batter northern portions of Mississippi, including Coahoma, DeSoto and Tunica counties.

“I have declared a State of Emergency to aid emergency officials in preparing for the onset of this potentially dangerous weather,” said Bryant. “Residents should not overreact but should make plans now to ensure they are prepared for a variety of conditions, including prolonged freezing temperatures, icy roadways, heavy rains, and potential flooding.

New Jersey Declares Yet Another State of Emergency

New Jersey Gov Christie issued yet another State of Emergency late Tuesday ahead of the winter storm that is forecast to dump up to a foot of snow just about everywhere.

All state offices will be closed Wednesday, said the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management.

“Tonight’s winter weather is expected to produce snow and ice, creating hazardous travel conditions and affecting areas throughout the state that are already recovering from yesterday’s storm,” said Gov. Christie in a statement, urging “all New Jerseyans to remain off the roads if possible” to allow “first responders and public safety officials can safely respond to any emergency situations.”
