Increase in global arms sales driven by demand in the Middle East and Asia –SIPRI

Posted by feww on February 20, 2017

United States, Russia, China, France and Germany responsible for 74 percent of global arms exports

Middle East: Between 2007–11 and 2012–16 arms imports by states in the Middle East rose by 86 per cent and accounted for 29 per cent of global imports in 2012–16, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

  • Saudi Arabia was the world’s second largest arms importer with an increase of 212 percent.
  • Arms imports by Qatar went up by 245 per cent. “Over the past five years, most states in the Middle East have turned primarily to the USA and Europe in their accelerated pursuit of advanced military capabilities, despite much lower oil prices.

Asia: Arms imports by states in Asia and Oceania increased by 7.7 percent and accounted for 43 percent of global imports in 2012–16.

  • India was the world’s largest importer of major arms, accounting for 13 percent of the global total.
  • India’s imports were far greater than those of its regional rivals China and Pakistan.
  • Imports by countries in South East Asia increased 6.2 percent.
  • Vietnam made a particularly large jump from being the 29th largest importer in 2007–11 to the 10th largest in 2012–16, with arms imports increasing by 202 per cent.

“While China is increasingly able to substitute arms imports with indigenous products, India remains dependent on weapons technology from many willing suppliers, including Russia, the USA, European states, Israel and South Korea.”

Arms exporters: United States

USA was the top arms exporter in 2012– 16, accounting for a one-third of global arms exports. “Its arms exports increased by 21 per cent compared with 2007–11.

  • Almost half of the US arms exports went to the Middle East.
  • US supplies major arms to at least 100 countries around the world—significantly more than any other supplier state.
  • Advanced strike aircraft with cruise missiles and other precision-guided munitions and the latest generation air and missile defense systems account for a significant share of US arms exports.
  • UK Government has also ignored calls to stop selling weapons to repressive regimes, including Saudi Arabia, which has been accused by UN bodies of potentially committing war crimes in its military operation in Yemen.

Britain is the second biggest arms dealer in the world

  • Two-thirds of UK weapons have been sold to Middle Eastern countries since 2010, said a report.
  • Britain has also sold arms to 39 of the 51 countries ranked “not free” on the Freedom House “Freedom in the world” report, and 22 of the 30 countries on the UK Government’s own human rights watch list.
  • Britain is now the second biggest arms dealer in the world, official government figures show – with two-thirds of the weapons fueling deadly conflicts in the Middle East.
  • The UK averaged second place in the global rankings on a rolling ten-year basis, making it Europe’s leading defense exporter in the period, said the UK Trade and Investment, a government body that promotes British exports overseas.
  • The Government has ignored calls to stop selling weapons to repressive regimes, including Saudi Arabia, which has been accused by UN bodies of potentially committing war crimes in its military operation in Yemen.

Russia accounted for a 23 percent of global exports. 70 percent of its arms exports went to four countries: India, Vietnam, China and Algeria.

China’s global arms exports almost doubled from 3.8 to 6.2 percent. It is now firmly a top-tier supplier, like France and Germany which accounted for 6 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively.

Other notable developments

  • Algeria was the largest arms importer in Africa.
  • The largest importers in sub-Saharan Africa—Nigeria, Sudan and Ethiopia—are all in conflict zones.
  • Colombia’s arms imports decreased by 19 percent, while Mexico’s arms imports grew by 184 percent.
  • Imports by states in Europe significantly decreased by 36 percent .
  • Imports by Azerbaijan were 20 times higher than those of Armenia in 2012–16.

The War Criminal
The war criminal Barack Obama “offered over $115 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia in 42 separate deals, more than any U.S. administration in the history of the U.S.-Saudi relationship. The majority of this equipment is still in the pipeline, and could tie the United States to the Saudi military for years to come,” said a report.

What Did These Kids Do to You, BaracK Obama?

5,835 refugee minors missing in Germany last year: report

Some 5,835 refugee minors have disappeared in Germany in 2015, including 555 who were under the age of 14, German media reported.

The report was published by the news organization Funke Mediengruppe, which obtained the information from the German parliament.

Most of the missing minors reportedly came to Europe from Syria and Afghanistan, and fewer numbers from Morocco, Eritrea, and Algeria, according to the data released by Berlin’s Interior Ministry.

The authorities have so far failed to explain how so many kids could have disappeared without a trace.

The latest revelation follows the Europol’s announcement in January, that since mid-2014 about 10,000 minors had gone missing after entering the EU.

In May 2015, Italian authorities warned that about 5,000 children had disappeared from asylum reception centers since the previous summer.

In Sweden, about 1,000 unaccompanied refugee children and teens had gone missing by October last year, within a month of arriving in the southern town of Trelleborg, officials have admitted.

[Our Swedish colleagues believe thousands more refugee minors are missing in Sweden.]

In 2015, a total of 1,047,844 refugees and migrants arrived in Europe [Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Malta, as well as Cyprus] including 1,011,712 by sea, with at least 5,394 fatalities recorded globally, said IOM’s Missing Migrants Project.

More than 95,000 unaccompanied refugee children claimed asylum in Europe in 2015, more than 4 time the number in 2014, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

Who is responsible for this evil?

Mr Obama, we hold you responsible for the destabilization of Syria, deaths of tens of thousands of Syrians and the fate of missing refugee children.

CONTINUATION OF THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY WITH RESPECT TO THE PROLIFERATION OF WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

On November 14, 1994, by Executive Order 12938, the President declared a national emergency with respect to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States posed by the proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons (weapons of mass destruction) and the means of delivering such weapons. On June 28, 2005, the President issued Executive Order 13382 which, inter alia, further amended Executive Order 12938 to improve our ability to combat proliferation. The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States; therefore, the national emergency first declared on November 14, 1994, and extended in each subsequent year, must continue. In accordance with this provision, I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice, stating that the national emergency with respect to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction that was declared in Executive Order 12938, as amended, is to continue in effect for 1 year beyond November 14, 2013.

Obama, Osama, Lies and the Fake Photos

Fake Photos and Lies of the Week

Americans, the world, NEED the truth to regain their mental health!

The photo may not be fake, but the President is FAKING the truth! White House Photo, Chuck Kennedy, 5/1/11

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, along with members of the national security team, receive an update on the mission against Osama bin Laden in the Situation Room of the White House, May 1, 2011. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza).

“A photograph released by the White House appeared to show the President and his aides in the situation room watching the action as it unfolded. In fact they had little knowledge of what was happening in the compound,” according to a report.

Leon Panetta, director of the CIA, has since revealed cameras mounted on the helmets of the US special forces providing live feed was cut off during a 25-minute period as they enter the alleged Bin-Laden compound.

“Once those teams went into the compound I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didn’t know just exactly what was going on. And there were some very tense moments as we were waiting for information.” Mr Panetta told PBS.

“We had some observation of the approach there, but we did not have direct flow of information as to the actual conduct of the operation itself as they were going through the compound.”

How Faked Photos of Osama Corpse Fooled 3 Senators

A bloodied image apparently showing a dead Osama bin Laden broadcast on Pakistani television and picked up by British newspaper websites is a fake, a report said.

“… a man with matted hair and a blank, half-opened eye has been circulating on the internet for the past two years. It was used on the front pages of the Mail, Times, Telegraph, Sun and Mirror websites, though swiftly removed after the fake was exposed on Twitter.”

“Three U.S. senators retracted statements they made Wednesday about seeing photographs of Osama bin Laden’s dead body, the latest victims of the fake corpse shots being passed around. Sen Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) said ‘it’s not pretty,’ … ” More …

The Truth?

The truth is Bin Laden died about 9 years ago, sources said.

8 in 10 Americans do not trust the U.S. government

Highest Rate of Distrust in Government

About 80 percent of Americans say they do not trust the U.S. government to do the right thing

Only one fifth  of Americans say they trust the government “just about always” or “most of the time,” a Pew Research Center survey said.

The distrust of the government is at an all-time record since a previous high of 73 percent during the Eisenhower administration in 1958, when the issue of “trust” was first included in a national survey, Pew Research said.

What is causing the huge distrust in the government? Pew cites economic uncertainty, overwhelming discontent with Congress, distrust of the elected officials among other reasons for to the current wave of public distrust.

Only about 25 percent of the 5,000 people who were surveyed said they thought the Congress was functioning at some level, the lowest rate of confidence in a quarter o a century, Pew said.

Mr Obama will probably be remembered as the President who fired the final shot that killed America!

Australian Coal and the Planet

Posted by feww on January 10, 2009

Australia is in the grip of a heatwave

Australia is about to experience some of the hottest temperatures anywhere on the planet!

Quote of the Day:

“Switzerland finances construction of coal plants, Sweden builds them, and Australia exports coal and sets atmospheric carbon dioxide goals so large as to guarantee destruction of much of the life on the planet.” ~ James Hansen, NASA Climatologist.

The above quote is from a letter to Michelle and Barack Obama written by Hanson on December 29, 2008.

Now the $64 trillion question

Why isn’t Hansen advocating a smart option like a low-energy path for the economy?

Orchids from ‘Hell’ for Obama Inauguration

Posted by feww on December 15, 2008

news submitted by Te2Ataria

Green President, green jobs, green energy; orange, pink and red orchids from 14,400 km (9,000 mi) away

A few orchids too far: The compassionate, environmentally conscious President-elect Obama will have orchids flown in from half away across the world for his inauguration

Barely days after President-elect Obama met with the former Vice-president Gore [the man who would have been a president,] to discuss the environmental imperatives of green jobs, energy and economy, it has been revealed that he will have orchids flown in from New Zealand for his inauguration on January 20, 2009.

Importing orchids from New Zealand: Flying in the face of environmental commonsense!

Thousands of stems of Disa orchids in a mixture of oranges, pinks and reds will be flown in to Washington DC within 24 hours of being cut in Taranaki, New Zealand.

The total weight of the consignment remains undisclosed, so we haven’t been able  to calculate the carbon footprint for the “orchid orgy.”

However,  each kilogram (2.2 lbs.) of goods flown from Taranaki (Wellington), New Zealand, to Washington DC, a total distance of about 14,400km  (9,000 miles), produces about 100kg (220 lbs.) of greenhouse gases (CO2e).  [The total amount of emission (kg) is equal to the gross weight of the orchids consignment (kg) multiplied by 100.]

The orchid grower, Mrs Coils, said if she lived in the US she would have voted for Obama. Bet you would, Mrs Coils!

President-elect Obama’s inauguration carbon footprint, Disa orchids, exotic chow, cocktails, security and all,  estimated at $100million, may exceed 58,400 metric tons of CO2.

On the eve of a major ecological collapse, and at a time when so many Americans live on the precipice of abject poverty, would a caring President-elect indulge in such unbridled extravagance?

Orchids from New Zealand? Yes, sure, why not? Go ahead! No one is looking, Mr President-elect.

Selecte Environmental Headlines: US Election Special

Posted by feww on November 5, 2008

Sen Barack Obama Elected US 44th President

In the carefully choreographed 2008 US presidential election, Sen Barack Obama was elected as the 44th US President by a total of 338 Electoral votes [as of Wednesday Nov. 5, 12:00am EST] against his opponent, the former Vietnam “war criminal” pilot, Sen McCain, who had only scored 155 Electoral Votes. Proposition 7 fails by a wide margin

Proposition 7, a California ballot measure calling for a large increase in the share of renewable power to 50% of electricity generation by 2025 appears to have failed by a wide margin. The measure proposed an annual 2 percent increase in the use of renewable sources for electricity generation reaching 50 percent by 2025. [Currently, only about 13 percent of California’s power comes from renewable sources.]

Opponents said that the measure would constrict the expansion of renewable power generation in California. (source)

Bhopal Water Pollution Case Reinstated

A lawsuit brought on behalf of people of Bhopal, India, contending that thousands of residents and workers were exposed to polluted drinking water after the 1984 Union Carbide factory in Bhopal exploded releasing toxic-gas, was reinstated by a U.S. appeals court.

Known as the world’s worst industrial disaster, the poorly maintained Union Carbide pesticide factory exploded on December 3, 1984 spewing deadly gas through streets of the central Indian town killing about 15,000 people and injuring at least 100,000. (Source)

Oh Canada!

A report by the Conference Board of Canada on the country’s environmental health placed Canada 15th among a total of 17 studied for environmental problems. The report identified Canada’s worst problems as

  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Excessive garbage production
  • Extensive waste of fresh water.

Only Australia and the United States fared worse. Sweden topped the list. (Source)
