Britain [England and Wales] Votes to Become an ‘Island’
Brexit: David Cameron to resign after England and Wales voted to leave EU.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron will step down by October after 52 – 48 referendum to leave the European Union.
“The referendum turnout was 71.8% – with more than 30 million people voting – the highest turnout at a UK-wide vote since 1992,” said a report.
Spooked by the prospect of having to accept refugees from Syria, 52 percent of the voters in England and Wales opted to shy away from the vital challenges posed by the evolutionary process.
Scotland
Meanwhile, Scotland voted in favor of the UK staying in the EU by a majority of 62% to 38%, prompting its first minister to state that a fresh independence referendum was “highly likely.”
“Nicola Sturgeon said it was “democratically unacceptable” that Scotland faced the prospect of being taken out of the EU against its will.”

Child slaves sold for $7,500 on streets: Report
Child survivors of the Nepal earthquake are being sold to wealthy British families as household slaves, according to a report.
A UK tabloid investigator, “posed as a wealthy Sikh living in Britain with a sick wife and elderly mother looking for a housemaid or houseboy,” was offered boys and girls as young as ten for as little as $7,500 (£5,250) by a gang selling children of Nepalese refugees and poor Indian families from the state of Bihar “like cattle.”
“Take a Nepalese to England. They are good people. They are good at doing housework and they’re very good cooks. No one is going to come after you,” slave trader Makkhan Singhtold the the undercover reporter. “We have supplied lads who have gone on to the UK.”
When asked how difficult it was to buy children, Singh, who referred to the kids as stock, replied: “India is flooded with boys. Nepal has been destroyed and all the Nepalese are here.
“We go to the poor parents, we talk to them, we do a deal,” he added.
“Minimum three years you’ve got to keep them here. Train them, make them work for you here. Get them into a routine. Then you can start getting documents for them. If you want my advice, take a 12 or 13-year-old.”

Britain splashes $12 billion on HMS Queen Elizabeth, as one more million working Britons fall below breadline
At least a million more working Britons plunge into poverty as housing costs continue soaring, while wages remain stagnant, according to a UK government report.
The number of working age adults living in “absolute poverty” soared by at least one million, from 7.7 million in 2010-11 to 8.7 million in 2012-13, says a report published by the Department for Work and Pensions.
Meanwhile, the number of children living below the breadline rose from 3.6 million to 4.1 million during the two-year period, said the Child Poverty Action group, citing the Department of Work and Pensions’ report.
“Today’s figures clearly show why living standards are falling. While wages have stagnated, and benefits and tax credits have been cut, prices have been rising—especially the cost of housing,” said Britain’s Trade Union Congress (TUC) secretary General.
“Since the last election a million more adults and half a million more children fell into absolute poverty when housing costs are taken into account. Without a major affordable home building program and action to secure fair wages, this type of poverty will continue to grow.”
QE Aircraft Carrier Class
HMS Queen Elizabeth is said to be a major milestone for the Royal Navy, and the defense of Britain, coming at a mere inflated price tag of £7bn ($12 billion).
The ship is scheduled to be commissioned in 2017 and will be followed by sister ship Prince of Wales, which by then would probably cost over $24 billion.
The new aircraft carrier comes more than 100 years after the concept was invented, and at a time when many experts argue that they are strategically obsolete for the UK.
But a few still idolize the white elephants.
“If we’re not secure at sea we risk starvation. Out of a population of more than 60 million we can probably feed 25 million ourselves,” says a “war-is-peace” military historian.
However, the fact remains that you can’t have your aircraft carriers and enough money to feed everyone, too. And there are about 9 million Britons mired in abject poverty as the “living” proof!

EXTREME WEATHER & CLIMATIC EVENTS
WETTEST WINTER IN 1/4 MILLENNIUM
HUMAN-INDUCED NATURAL DISASTERS
.
Wettest, 5th Warmest and Probably Most Disastrous Winter in the UK
Britain had the wettest winter since records began in 1766, with 435mm of rain recorded up to February 24, said the UK Met Office.
New records were set in many parts of the UK, with southeast and central southern England receiving more than double the average winter rainfall. And more rain is expected…
Ferocious storms have caused extensive damage along the coastal areas, cutting off a major rail link and flooding thousands of homes.
Some 25 square miles of land have been inundated in the Somerset Levels, as well as towns and villages along River Thames.
More than 6,500 properties have been flooded in England and Wales since December.
The cost of damage could top $2billion.

Average Temperatures
The UK has been experiencing a warmer than average winter so far, with an average mean temperature of 5.2ºC, or 1.5ºC above normal.
It is the 5th warmest winter since 1910, said the Met Office.
12% More sunshine than average
Despite the wet weather, south England has experienced 12% more sunshine than average this winter.

Sinkholes and Landslides
Meanwhile, the British Geological Survey reported that the exceptional winter storms that struck the UK this year have contributed to an increase in the incidence of sinkholes and landslides.
UK Weather Forecast
The Met Office has warned:
“An area of low pressure is expected to move eastwards on Friday. There is considerable uncertainty in its track and therefore on the risk and location of any snow.
“This warning will be kept under review and the public are advised to keep up to date with the forecast and warnings.”

Flood-ravaged Britain now threatened by ice and heavy snow: Report
Arctic blast and heavy snow plunging Britain into frigid conditions following destruction by mega storms.
The Environment Agency issued a dozen severe flood warnings indicating indicate “danger to life” as rivers reach dangerous levels.
It also posted hundreds of flood warnings and flood alerts following a gigantic storm surge spawned by strong winds and high tides which destroyed coastal towns.
Devon, Cornwall, parts of Wales and southeast England were the worst hit areas, according to reports.
“Hundreds of homes were flooded and officials closed the Thames Barrier to protect properties in London,” said a report.

“This weekend and into the beginning of next week there is more wind and rain on the way with 80mph gusts in parts and up to three inches of rain likely in 72 hours. Torrential downpours are going to be devastating in parts of the UK which have been given absolutely no let-up from the stormy weather,” the report quoted a meteorologist as saying.
Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday called another emergency COBRA meeting to review the crisis.
[COBRA: Cabinet Office Briefing Room A – the location for a crisis response committee by the government of the United Kingdom in response to instances of national or regional crisis.]
He said: “A range of ministers from across government will be working very closely with local councils, power companies, utility and transport companies, making sure all those organizations are prepared for the bad weather.”
Fierce storms have lashed the UK since before Christmas with the latest onslaught on Thursday night and yesterday.
Homes have once again been left without electricity after high winds tore down power lines while transport networks have been crippled.
Winter 2013 – 2014 is forecast to be “exceptionally severe,” with above-average snowfall and frigid temperatures, meteorologists say.

EXTREME CLIMATIC & WEATHER EVENTS
.
High winds, giant waves and tidal surge batter western coasts of Britain and France, flooding coastal towns
Southwest England, Wales, western and southern Scotland and Northern Ireland are reportedly the worst-hit UK regions as the latest round of extreme winter storms batters western Europe.
Hurricane-force winds gusting up to 146 km/h, combined with Extreme Rain Events and exceptionally high tides, have battered coastal areas in Britain and France, leaving homes in dozens of cities and towns as well as low-lying areas flooded.
High tides and strong winds have also caused flooding in Wales and western England as officials warn of a continuing threat in the UK coastal areas.
The UK Environment Agency has issued four severe flood warnings, down from 14, meaning “danger to life” for Gloucestershire and Dorset.
Earlier on Friday, residents in parts of Dorset and Aberystwyth were evacuated from their homes before the high tide on Friday night, said the report.
Scotland
A massive tidal surge combined with severe gale force winds inundated coastal areas of western and southern Scotland. Homes in the Isle of Whithorn, Portpatrick, Garlieston, Kirkcudbright, Annan, Carsethorn, Powfoot and Port William have been flooded.
Southwest of Scotland is one of the worst-hit areas, having suffered similar flooding earlier in the week, with numerous properties inundated along the coastline of Dumfries and Galloway, reported BBC.
France
Parts of northwestern France have also been deluged. Homes and business were evacuated in parts of Brittany coast as the Laita River overflowed its banks, leaving large areas buried under floodwater.
The latest round of extreme winter storm follows a pattern of extreme weather events which began battering western and northern Europe in early December and continued over Christmas.
Forecast for the UK
In November 2009, EDRO/FIRE-EARTH Models forecast Climate Change could directly affect about half the population in the UK within 3 to 5 years.

Massive snow and violent gales could hit much of the UK through Friday
The UK Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for violent gales across much of the country on Thursday as well as a snow warning for Scotland through Friday.
With dangerous windchill, overnight temperatures are forecast to plunge to -11ºC in much of the North through weekend and to -5C in the South, including the capital London.
Orange [“Amber”] Warning of Wind
“Westerly gales are expected to spread southwards across northern and central areas of the UK on Thursday, with widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph. However within the area of the amber warning gusts are expected to reach 80 mph in places and perhaps as high as 90 mph in exposed parts of the north and west of Scotland,” warned the UK Met Office.
Warning also includes potential for significant coastal flooding along the East Coast of England, parts of southeast Scotland, north Wales and northwest England… causing significant disruption along coastal routes.

Winter 2013 could be the longest in history
BRITAIN is facing an unprecedented six month winter, with a strong probability heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures would last until May 2014, said forecasters.
A “widespread snow event” is forecast to wreak havoc on the roads and paralyze transport networks as early as next week.
Winter 2013 could be the worst in 66 years with Polar conditions lasting into May 2014. A record-breaking period of bitter Arctic winds, paralyzing snowfall and plunging temperatures is forecast to hit the entire country.
A high pressure system is drawing in freezing air from the Arctic, generating “an exceptionally prolonged period of widespread cold” in Britain that will be colder than in Iceland, Norway and Sweden and even parts of the Arctic region, forecasters said.

Heavy snow and massive drifts are forecast to cause chaos for up to six months [Image credit: APEX/ via Express UK]
“It will be accompanied by snow drifts of several feet and long-lasting snow accumulations on a widespread scale,” said a long-range forecaster at Exacta Weather.
“This period of snow and cold is likely to result in an incomparable scenario to anything we have experienced in modern times.”
“This winter could also be a carbon copy of 1947, the snowiest in history with showers in March leading to seven-meter high drifts,” said the report, “the worst winter since 1814, with continuous snowfall from January 22 to March 17.”
This winter could now parallel the worst winters ever recorded, said a forecaster for Vantage Weather Services.
“Looking back at historical data there is certainly an argument that we may well parallel with severe winters of the past including 1947 and 1962.
“We have had such a cold November, and there is no sign of any change due to a high pressure blocking system.
“When these severe temperatures bed in it becomes like an accumulative effect – like a heatwave but in reverse, we could be looking at the longest winter in history,” he said.
“And this is when you see records breaking, all signs point towards this winter being exceptionally severe, I wouldn’t put anything past it.”
An estimated 40,000 people perished in Britain due to the cold weather in 2012.
“That more people die from the cold every year in temperate Britain than in freezing Sweden is an embarrassment and a tragedy,” said a campaigner.

Storm-force winds batter Britain, again
The Met Office in the UK has Issued the following Warning and Assessment for Saturday – Sunday
Warning
Westerly winds will strengthen through Saturday afternoon and into the evening, bringing gusts of 50-60 mph to many parts of the warning area, and locally around 70 mph along exposed coasts.
The public should be aware of the risk of localized disruption, particularly to travel.
Chief Forecaster’s assessment
A deep area of low pressure will track east across Ireland and southern Scotland during the course of Saturday and early Sunday, bringing a spell of windy weather to many parts of the UK.
The strongest winds are expected to affect parts of southwest England and south Wales later on Saturday afternoon and during the evening, accompanied by squally heavy showers, including the risk of hail and thunder. With many trees still in leaf, the forecast wind gusts are likely to lead to some branches and trees being brought down, whilst leading to difficult driving conditions and also affecting outdoor events such as firework displays. Large waves and over-topping are also likely along some stretches of coastline.

High Winds Knock Out Power to Thousands in the U.S., Canada
Meantime, back in the U.S., high winds from Halloween Storm have knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers across a vast region including parts of Ohio and West Virginia.
In Canada, near hurricane force winds knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of Quebec residences on Friday.

It’s about oil, again!
Another War in Falklands Could Flare Before Natural Gas Does
The Falklands War, which followed Argentina’s “re-occupation” of the Falklands in 1982, claimed the lives of 649 Argentine and 255 British soldiers.
Argentina considered the action as the “re-occupation of its own territory,” where as the British government saw it as an “invasion” of a “British dependent territory” and dispatched its naval force to retake the islands.
The limited war fought between the two countries resulted from the centuries-old dispute over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, as well as South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which were initially occupied by France in 1764.
The islands lie in the South Atlantic, about 400 miles east of Argentina and some 8,000 miles away from Britain.
Geographically, Argentina has a legitimate claim to the sovereignty of Falkland Islands—proximity.
Cancun Summit 2010
Leaders of 32 Latin American and Caribbean countries unanimously backed Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands at a 2010 Cancun summit in Mexico, said a report .
In their statement, the 32 leaders reaffirmed “backing for Argentina’s legitimate rights in its sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom relating to the ‘Malvinas Question,'” and condemned the oil drilling operations.
The Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called on the UN to debate Argentina’s sovereignty claim to the islands.
“What is the geographic, the political or economic explanation for England [Britain] to be in Las Malvinas?” Lula asked.
“Could it be because England is a permanent member of the UN’s Security Council where they can do everything and the others nothing?”
The Undesired
Desire Petroleum, a UK energy company, probably owned by one or more of the multinationals, is about to begin drilling for oil in the territorial waters of the Falkland Islands, in the South Atlantic Ocean, despite strong objections from Argentina.

The semi-submersible Giant oil rig Ocean Guardian, built 24 years ago, traveled 62 days from Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth to the Falklands. Source: Desire Petroleum. “Desire Petroleum estimates potential oil reserves exceeding 3.5 billion barrels and more than nine trillion cubic feet of gas. … In 1998 six wells were drilled to the north of the islands that revealed the presence of a rich organic source rock that could hold up to 60 billion barrels of oil.”
The oil fields near Falklands are said to hold an estimated total of 60 billion barrels; however, Desire Petroleum, has said “the amount which could be exploited commercially would probably be a fraction of that.” BBC UK reported. [The rest of it would be released in the ocean to keep an oil-rich marine environment.]
Desire Oil has towed a platform to a drilling site about 100km (62 miles) north of the Falklands. Drilling was scheduled to start at 06:00UTC today.
Argentina, which has long claimed the islands, known locally as las Malvinas, filed a claim with the United Nations “for a vast expanse of ocean, based on research into the extent of the continental shelf, stretching to the Antarctic and including the island chains governed by the UK, ” BBC reported.
Based on the claim, Argentina says drilling by the UK company violates its sovereignty and has since imposed shipping restrictions around the Falklands, and has threatened to take “adequate measures” to stop “British oil exploration in contested waters around the islands.”
Argentine government has asked its neighbors to also impose shipping restrictions in the area, and is further seeking support from Latin American countries.
According to desire oil, Argentina is about to start its own exploration off the west west coast of the islands.

Comments made by various parties:
President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela: Britain is acting irrationally and it’s high time it realized the “time for empires was over.”
Argentinian Govt: No war this time, but Britain must negotiate sovereignty.
UN: He who has nukes calls the tunes.
Desire Petroleum [having towed the giant rig, the Ocean Guardian, about 13,000 km (6,950 NM) from the Cromarty Firth, Scotland] : “Desire is an oil company and it’s exploring for oil and not getting involved in what Argentina is saying about going to the UN. The rig is sitting firmly inside UK waters.” Even if the commercially viable quantities of oil were to be found in the are, it would many years before any oil would be recovered. The Company spokesman added.
Falklands Legislative Assembly [“The Licensor”]: We have “every right” to do “legitimate business.”
UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband: British oil exploration in the Falklands is “completely in accordance with international law.” [British government may be occupied by Israel-first interests, but Britain is not like Israel.]
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown: UK government has “made all the preparations that are necessary to make sure the Falkland islanders are properly protected.” [We have nukes; Argies don’t.]

Truckers and fishermen across Europe protest rising oil prices
Truckers and fishermen across Europe held protests against rising world oil prices on Wednesday, demanding government action to prevent the price hikes. Protests were held across Britain, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Netherlands and Spain.

In Britain a convoy of truckers converged on London on Tuesday, closing a busy main road and causing traffic backlogs. Similar protests took place in Wales, were Welsh hauliers threatened to blockade ports and refineries. Refinery blockades in 2000 caused shortages in many areas. The drivers demanded a rebate because they said fuel bills had risen by 50 percent in one year. Britain has the highest fuel taxes in the European Union.
In Bulgaria hundreds of truckers launched protests in the capital Sofia, the Black Sea port city of Varna and the Danube port city of Russe on Wednesday, demanding lower taxes on fuels and calling for price ceilings on fuels.
In France the fishermen continued their ongoing protest against high diesel prices on Wednesday with truckers and farmers adding their voice demanding action from the government. Fishermen demanded to buy diesel at discounted rate at half the market prices, which have increased by 30 percent in 2008. They staged similar protests last year asking government to cushion the effects of surging marine fuel prices that have eroded their profit margins. Farmers blocked access to an oil depot operated by Total near the city of Toulouse and demanded the government exempt them from a special petrol tax called TIPP.
French truckers group OTRE also threatened to take action across France if the government failed to respond to their demands by Thursday evening.
In Italy fishermen in the Adriatic will strike commencing Friday.
In Netherlands truckers are planning a national day of action for Thursday to protest against rising diesel prices.
In Spain the Fishermen’s Confederation is arranging a protest in Madrid for Friday and the main truckers’ association has called a strike for June 8 concerning high fuel prices. Farmers in Catalonia are expected to announce protests.
