Hundreds of NSW homes may have been lost to worst bushfires in living memory
More than 90 fires are burning, mostly uncontained, around the state of New South Wales (NSW) fanned by high winds and soaring temperatures, said a report.
Authorities have issued emergency warnings for multiple location across the state.
Wildfires have destroyed at least 30 homes at Springwood, in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, prompting evacuations, “blanketing Australia’s biggest city in choking yellow smoke and closing highways,” said a report.
“The airport at Newcastle, 160 km (100 miles) north of Sydney, was closed and schools, workplaces and entire neighborhoods were evacuated.”
“If we get through with less than 100 homes destroyed today, we have been lucky,” the NWS Rural Fire Service Commissioner (RFS) told Australian Broadcasting Corp.
A massive, 300-hectare bushfire is raging out of control this afternoon threatening the GlencoreXstrata’s Mangoola coal mine, said a report, prompting RFS to issue an emergency warning for the Blackjack Mountain fire, West of Musswellbrook near Wybong Road.
Power was cut to tens of thousands of homes and businesses in multiple areas, especially the Blue Mountains, as well as other areas west, southwest and north of Sydney, said reports.
Sydney sky described as “apocalyptic”
Clouds of smoke have enveloped Sydney, turning the sky and the harbor orange, with smoke particles raining over Australia’s most populous city in scenes described as “apocalyptic.”
Wildfires destroy homes, injure fire crews and force mass evacuations in west Sydney.
At least 59 bush and grassfires are raging across New South Wales (NSW), including 40 uncontained blazes, with more than 500 firefighters and 200 fire engines on the ground, said NSW Premier.
The fires have forced the authorities to evacuate scores of homes and a University of Western Sydney (UWS) campus following a power outage that affected the entire Richmond area.
Additionally, more than 300 students from St Paul’s Grammar School In Castlereagh were evacuated to Penrith’s Whitewater Park after an emergency warning was issued for a fire threatening properties on nearby Devlin Street, said a report.

The heat was so intense firefighters were forced to abandon their trucks when they became surrounded by bushfires in Sydney’s western suburbs, said a report.
The bushfire season has come early to Sydney area, with out-of-control fires devouring the city’s west, reports said.
Intensive thunderstorm ignites wildfires in Western Australia
An emergency warning remained in place in Western Australia’s South West as a dozen wildfires raged.
At least 130 personnel are battling an out of control fire in forest between Bridgetown and Nannup, which has consumed more than 1,700 hectares in less than 24 hours.
Australia experienced its hottest month on record in January 2013, with both the average mean temperature of 29.68°C and the average mean maximum temperature of 36.92°, topping previous records set in January 1932, Australian Bureau of Meteorology (ABOM) reported.
“The heatwave in the first half of January was exceptional in its extent and duration. The national average maximum temperature on 7 January was the highest on record. Numerous stations set records for the most days in succession above 40°C, including Alice Springs (17 days) and Birdsville (31 days).”
January heatwave set all-time record high temperatures in many locations including Sydney (45.8°C on 18 January) and Hobart (41.8°C on 4 January). The highest temperature recorded during the heatwave was at Moomba in South Australia (49.6°C on 12 January), ABOM reporetd.
Extreme Rain Events
Extreme rain events plagued coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales as a low pressure system associated with ex-tropical cyclone Oswald tracked steadily south between 22 and 29 January.
“Many coastal areas from Sydney to Cape York received more than 200 mm of rainfall. The most extreme rainfalls were in the region between Rockhampton and Bundaberg, and in the ranges along the New South Wales – Queensland border region.” BOM reported.
Some 1,496 mm of rain fell in Upper Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland in eight days, and 1,426 mm in Boolaroo Tops, southwest of Gladstone.

New storm projected to pass near NJ disaster coastline Wednesday
Mandatory evacuation order has been issued for low lying areas in Brick Township, N.J.
A nor’easter is expected to bring winds of 60-70 mph, several inches of rain, which would trigger flooding along the coast line, and 4-6 inches of snow to Pennsylvania and New York, forecasters said.

Three local government areas in NWS, Australia have been declared natural disaster zones following a massive fire that has been raging in northern NSW for two weeks, reports said.
The 51,000-hectare blaze has consumed large swaths of national parks, state forests and private land across Armidale Dumaresq, Walcha and Kempsey, said a report.

The thick wall of dust that blew across Australia on September 26, 2009, hung in a slightly thinner veil over the Coral Sea on September 27. Ripples and waves shape the dust in reflection of turbulence in the air. The dust will gradually settle over the ocean, where it will provide a source of iron to phytoplankton, microscopic plant-like organisms that grow in sunlit surface water. The iron acts as fertilizer, making it possible for large phytoplankton blooms to develop. While phytoplankton are an important source of food for marine life, too much phytoplankton can rob the ocean of oxygen, creating dead zones. It is certain that ocean biologists will watch closely to see if and how the immense dust storms of September 2009 will affect Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, visible as blue-green dots in the top center of the image. Among the areas devastated by bushfires in Victoria, Australia, in early February 2009 were Kinglake National Park and the surrounding rural and agricultural areas. The park is located on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range Mountains that arc northward through Victoria and along Australia’s East Coast. Australian Firefighters Tell Their Government to ‘Stick’ its Policies and Stop the Climate Change!
After a week of deadly bushfires that killed 181 people [the death toll would probably rise further,] and destroyed more than a thousand homes making 5,000 homeless, the Australian firefighters called on their government to change its disastrous policies.

“Without a massive turnaround in policies, aside from the tragic loss of life and property, we will be asking firefighters to put themselves at an unacceptable risk,” United Firefighters Union of Australia said in an open letter to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
“We understand that our job is dangerous by its very nature. However, we are gravely concerned that current … policies seem destined to ensure a repeat of the recent tragic events,” said the union.
The firefighters union together with Green politicians and environmental activists assert that “the deadly infernos are a climate change wake-up call to Australia.” Reuters said.
“Australia is one of the most vulnerable nations to climate change because of its hot, dry environment, but with its dependence on coal-fired power, Rudd has set a target to cut overall greenhouse gas emissions by only 5 percent by 2020.” The report said.
As strong winds amid soaring temperatures fanned several bushfires which ripped through small towns north of Melbourne on Saturday night, Melbourne’s temperature reached a record 46.4 degrees Celsius (115.5 degrees Fahrenheit).
The cost of damage could exceed $2 billion, according to Standard & Poors.
