The U.S. Wildfire Situation Report

Report issued by NIFC – Monday, August 13, 2018  @ 05:30 MT

National Preparedness Level:  5  [on a scale from 1 to 5 – as of July 27 at 2 pm MDT ]

More than 30,000 firefighters and support personnel continue to work on 110 large fires that have burned 1.7 million acres in 14 states. Extreme fire behavior was reported in Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Washington. The Cougar Creek, Boffer, Grass Valley, Coal Hollow, Rabbit Foot, Cabin Lake fires all gained thousands of acres yesterday causing many nearby residents to be evacuated.

Weather: Critical fire weather conditions will continue across the northern Great Plains from central Montana east across North Dakota, as a breezy, dry northwesterly flow develops behind a front. A trough of low pressure extending southwest from south central Canada into the Pacific Northwest will promote near normal temperatures across the northwestern corner of the country. Widely scattered thunderstorms will drift northward into the Great Basin from the Southwest. Developing storms on the northern fringes of the moisture plume will tend to produce little rainfall. In the East, a strong, broad area of low pressure will allow wet conditions to continue across the Mid-Atlantic States and the Deep South. Localized flooding is possible in some areas across the Deep South from the continuance of precipitation. Scattered showers and storms will bring some relief to Texas, as a stalled-out area of low pressure lingers over the Panhandle…

Posted by feww on May 25, 2012

Damage Caused by Extreme Weather Prompts Federal Disaster Declaration

The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas in the area affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding during the period of April 14-15, 2012.

Private properties and public facilities were damaged by the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding in the counties of Edwards, Ellsworth, Harper, Hodgeman, Jewell, Kiowa, Mitchell, Osborne, Rice, Rush, Russell, Sedgwick, Stafford, and Sumner.

Other Global Disasters, Significant Events

  • Ontario, Canada. The city of Timmins (Pop: ~45,000)  in NE Ontario has declared a state of emergency as a large brushfire continues to burn out of control, reports said.
    • The large, ‘unpredictable’ fire burning about 30km outside of Timmins is fueled by extremely dry conditions, mixed with the very high temperatures and strong winds, prompting evacuation of goldmines in the area due to fears of suffocation.
    • “Residents of Kirkland Lake have been told to pack three days worth of clothing in case of an emergency evacuation as a massive wild fire continues to burn and make its way closer to the town,” said a report.
  • New Mexico, USA.Two large wildfires in SW NM, which were sparked by lightning, have now into one consuming an area about 300km² and destroying about two dozens homes and other structures.
    • The Baldy blaze (sparked May 9) and Whitewater fire (spotted May 16) currently have zero containment.
  • Nevada, USA. The Topaz Ranch Estates fire that broke out earlier this week near the Nevada-California border has now consumed   about 9,000 acres, destroying about two dozen homes and outbuildings in southern Douglas County. The fire is about 15 percent contained.
  • California, USA.A fast-growing wildfire is threatening homes in the community of Shelter Valley east of Julian in San Diego County, forcing evacuations.
    • The blaze has consumed at least 1,000 acres since it was  100 homes are under evacuation orders, reports said.
  • Michigan, USA.A fast-moving wildfire in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has burned about 10,000 acres, prompting evacuations in its path.
    •  The blaze, called Duck Lake Fire, which was sparked by lightning, was “burning explosively,” the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said.
    • Another wildfire in Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Schoolcraft County, also started by lightning, has burned about 4,000 acres as of posting.

Disaster Calendar 2011 – October 9

[October 9, 2011]  Mass die-offs resulting from human impact and the planetary response to the anthropogenic assault could occur by early 2016.  SYMBOLIC COUNTDOWN: 1,620 Days Left to the ‘Worst Day’ in Human History

  • Manitoba, Canada. About 50,000 acres of land have been consumed by wildfires in southeastern Manitoba forcing more than 500 people to move to shelters.
    • Dry conditions and winds of up to 90 kmh helped spread the fire covering an area 40 km long and six km wide near the town of Bissett,  a report said.
    • “Fires also raged outside the southeastern Manitoba communities of Lac du Bonnet and Stuartburn, where a state of emergency was declared and 60 people were asked to leave for safety.”
  • Alberta, Canada. At least 12 fires are burning across Alberta, including a large fire north of Fort McMurray, which started in May.
    • McMurray fire has consumed more than 700,000 hectares,  fire officials said: “We expect that fire to be burning up until, probably, the next couple of months.”
    • “We’ve had just about 950,000 hectares of Alberta burn this year, and last year at this time we only had 80,000, so that’s quite a significant difference.”
  • Cairo, Egypt. Clashes between Coptic Christians and the security forces in Cairo have left at least 23 people dead and 150 injured, reports said.
    • About 10 percent of Egypt’s 81 million population are Christians.
    • “The only beneficiary of these events and acts of violence are the enemies of the January revolution and the enemies of the Egyptian people, both Muslim and Christian,” said the country’s Prime Minister.
