Background:

Erdogan government has again sacked about 4,000 more public officials in its latest purge related to July 2016 failed coup.

Additionally, more than 9,000 police officers were suspended and a further 1,000 arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of having links to the cleric Fethullah Gulen.

More than 160,000 employees both in the public and private sectors have now been sacked and up to 60,000 others arrested over the past 10 months.

Refugee, Migrant Arrivals by Sea Surpass a Record 430,000: IOM

More than 432,000 refugees, migrants arrive in Europe by sea since January, with 2,748 recorded fatalities

An estimated 432,761 asylum-seeking refugees and migrants have reached Europe by sea in 2015 so far this year (as of September 10, 2015), reported the International Organization for Migration (IOM). “This figure is double the amount of arrivals in the Mediterranean for the entire 2014, emphasizing the scale of the current migration emergency.”

About 70% of the arrivals were registered in Greece (309,356 people), and 28% in Italy (121,139 people). At least 2,748 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea (year to September 10), while 2,223  migrant deaths were recorded in 2014, according to Missing Migrants*.

Greece, the largest arrival portal, registered about 246,000 people: over 70% came from Syria alone (175,375), while the other main countries of origin were Afghanistan (50,177), Pakistan (11,289), and Iraq (9,059) between January 1 and August 31. (Additionally, more than 50,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in Greece since the beginning of September, IOM estimates).

Italy recorded 116,149 arrivals during the same period—a 3% increase compared with last year—with the bulk of refugees and migrants coming from Eritrea (30,708), Nigeria (15,113), Somalia (8,790), Sudan (7,126), Syria (6,710), and Gambia (5,514), said the report.

At various border crossings between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) IOM staff recorded that more than 3,000 migrants were in the area passing the borders in groups of 50 every 20 minutes in recent days. Fewer than 50% of the migrants and refugees were nationals from Iraq and Syria, most of them families with little children. The rest were mainly nationals from Afghanistan and Pakistan along with some from Sub-Saharan Africa. Many were also speaking Greek, confirming the fact that along with recent arrivals, there were also those who have lived for years in Greece, wanting now to head to Northern and Western Europe.

More than 450,000 migrants have entered Germany so far this year, with a total of at least 800,000  expected for all of 2015.

Half of Syria’s Prewar Population Have Fled Their Homes

Civil war displaces 11.6 million Syrians

Syria’s bloody civil war has forced half of the country’s prewar population to flee their homes.

At least 7.6 million Syrians are internally displaced, and an additional 4 million have fled the country, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).  The population at the start of the civil war was 23 million. Countries hosting the largest number of refugees are

• Turkey: 1.8 million
• Lebanon: 1.1 million
• Iraq: 230,000
• Egypt: 140,000
• Jordan: 600,000 (Jordan insists there are 1.4 million Syrian refugees in the country, a figure equal to 20 percent of the kingdom’s population, said a report.)

In 2013, 9,500 Syrians were displaced per day on average. By July 2014, the total number of internally displaced people (IDPs) reached 6.4 million, a third of the entire population of the country. An additional three million Syrians have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. A stable middle-income country that hosted refugees from all over the region and beyond just four years ago, Syria is now experiencing a displacement and protection crisis of a magnitude the world has not seen for many years. “This is the biggest refugee population from a single conflict in a generation,” said UN refugee chief.

A large number of Syrians have been killed in the four-and-a-half year bloody civil war; however, the figures suggested are unreliable.

1 Million Ukrainians Displaced by Conflict

More than 1 million people have been displaced since the conflict began in Ukraine, says the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).

“It’s safe to say you have over a million people now displaced as a result of the conflict, internally and externally together,” Reuters quoted director of the UNHCR’s bureau for Europe, as saying.

“I mean 260,000 [internally displaced] in Ukraine—it’s a low estimate—and 814,000 [have fled to] Russia.”

There has been a surge in the number of war refugees internally displaced in Ukraine since about mid August, local media reported.

Bardarbunga Eruption

Volcanic activity continues in Holuhraun lava filed webcam images show, The rate of flow remains steady with no visible change in activity since Monday, with effusive lava eruption and fountains, said IMO.

The largest earthquake to hit the volcano system measured 3.1Mw, which occurred in the northern part of the magma field with additional seismicity detected beneath the glacier rim.

IMO said:

• The eruption has not created any ash-fall. A white plume of steam and gas rises from the eruption on Holuhraun, reaching an elevation of about 4.5 km above sea level. Downwind, a volcanic cloud extends from the eruption site. Yesterday afternoon a white cloud from the eruption extended 60 km to the north-north-east.
• In comparison to yesterday, more [sulfur] dioxide has been measured in the eruption cloud.
• Sandstorms on the floodplain around the eruption site have contributed fine-grained particles to the eruption cloud. This was seen as a light-brown haze earlier today near to Egilsstaðir.
• The eruptive fissure is about 1.5 km in length, positioned about 4.5 km from the ice margin of Dyngjujökull.
• At 14:00 UTC yesterday, the lava flow was 4.2 km² in area. At 08:00 UTC the edge had extended 1.5 km to the east-south-east.

 Tungurahua shows  increased activity: Ecuador Seismologists

Dozens of explosions were recorded at the volcano on Monday, as experts warned of renewed sudden increases in explosive activity.

The volcano has been ejecting plumes of ash to heights of about to 3km since Wednesday.

The 5,023-m volcano has been active since 1999, and has shown signs of increased activity since February 1, 2014.

“Throat of Fire,” as it’s known in the in the local Quechua language, is one of nine or so active volcanoes in Ecuador, located about 140 km  south of the capital, Quito.

 Flash Floods in Sweden and Denmark

Extreme Rain Events triggered flash floods causing traffic chaos in Sweden and Denmark, submerging occupied vehicles, and forcing the evacuation of residents in some areas, AP reported.

Some 120mm (4.7 inches) of rain fell in about three hours, inundating the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

San Carlos Declares State of Emergency Over PG&E Pipeline
“City officials in San Carlos, Calif. have declared a State of Emergency after a series of internal PG&E e-mails sparked safety concerns over a natural gas line that runs through the city. Issues with the gas line include certain sections made up of a “thin wall” pipe made in 1929 and external corrosion with fatigue cracks on the pipe. City leaders on Friday also requested PG&E shut down the pipeline until a hearing could be conducted with CPUC to address the issue. PG&E declined the request, according to city officials. The city on Friday night obtained a temporary injunction against PG&E in San Mateo County Superior Court requiring PG&E to immediately shut off service to pipeline 147. Egypt

At least 55 killed, over 200 wounded amid new wave of protests in Egypt

Clashes between opponents and supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi left at least 55 people dead and more than 200 wounded across the country on Sunday,  one of the bloodiest days since the “USrael-controlled” army seized power in a coup.

About 500 others were arrested, according to the

Protesters chanted: “The coup is terrorism” and “Sisi [the military ruler] is a killer.”

Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the man who toppled Morsi said: “There are a lot of people who think Egypt’s army can be broken. Egypt’s army is like a pyramid but it is a pyramid because the people of Egypt support it.”

The military says it was responding to the will of the people. “We are answerable to God and to you Egyptians for the mandate [by the] Egyptian people towards the army and police to preserve Egypt,” said Sisi.

194 Bodies Found in Migrant Shipwreck Off the Coast of Sicily

Search teams have now recovered a total of 194 bodies in and around the vessel that sank on Thursday near the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

Of the 518 African migrants on the boat 155 survived, which leave another 169 other missing presumed dead.

The 20-meter fishing vessel carrying mainly Eritrean and Somalian asylum seekers, including dozens of women and children, caught fire and sank early Thursday off the coast of Lampedusa, said reports.

Iraq

Another day of deadly violence ended Sunday with at least 46 people killed and 180 others wounded.

Suicide bombers. truck bombers, gunfire and IEDs were responsible for the carnage across at least 7 Iraqi death centers of Baghdad,
Qabak, Tal Afar, Mosul, Kirkuk, Dour and Tuz, said reports.

Floods Affect Millions in East, South, SW and Central China

Storms, flooding and landslides leave many dead or missing around China

Extreme rain events in the Chinese provinces of Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi and Sichuan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, have triggered severe flooding and landslides, affecting  thousands of towns and villages, disrupting the lives of tens of millions of people, leaving many dead or missing, and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate. The disasters have destroyed tens of thousands of homes, millions of hectares of crops and much of the infrastructures .

• Syria.  The joint proxy war waged by Saudi Arabia and Israel against Syria has entered a new phase. The head of UN peacekeeping operations has described the Syrian conflict as a “civil war.”
  • Meantime, Germany’s leading daily newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported the May 25 Houla massacre was perpetrated by opposition forces aligned with the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
  • “The report refutes the official account by the United States and other major powers and presented uncritically by the media. • Gaza.  The water in Gaza is too contaminated to drink, says a joint report by the Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and Save the Children.
  •  The report “Gaza’s Children: Falling Behind” describes the impact of the ongoing blockade on the lives and health of Gaza’s children.
  • Gaza’s only fresh source of water is highly contaminated by fertilizer and human feces, the report says.
  • The number of children being treated for diarrhea has doubled in 5 years, and the levels of nitrates found in the water are responsible for to the doubling since the blockade began, according to the report.
  • Israel’s 5-year blockade is preventing crucial sanitation equipment from entering the territory, and Gaza’s sewage system is “completely broken.”
