Thousands evacuated as severe flooding swamps drought-stricken southern Spain

Mega-flooding in southern Spain has claimed at least a dozen lives, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.

  • Triggered by an extreme rain event, flooding throughout the region has transformed roads into rivers, inundating thousands of homes and destroying public infrastructure.
  • The worst-hit areas are provinces of Andalusia, Almeria and Murcia in  southern and southeastern Spain.
  • About 245mm of rain fell in the area on Friday morning alone, said Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET.
  • AEMAT has forecast stormy weather and intense rains for the southern half of the Iberian peninsula and the Mediterranean area, next week.
