USDA designates hundreds of counties and parishes across the US as crop disaster areas

Major losses and damages caused by multiple disasters including drought and deluge, frost and freeze, excessive snow and extreme rainfall, as well as other extreme climate and weather events, and two Hurricanes Maria and Irma have prompted USDA to declare crop disasters in at least 287 counties, parishes and territories across 22 states and the Virgin Islands.

Those states are Alabama, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin, and the Virgin Islands.

The Disaster Designations:

Release No. 0132.17  [Oct. 17, 2017]
USDA has designated three territories in the Virgin Islands as crop disaster areas due to losses caused by multiple disasters that occurred during Hurricanes Irma and Maria that occurred during the 2017 crop year.

• Designation Number 1 – St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands have been designated as crop disaster areas due to losses caused by Hurricane Irma that occurred during Sept. 6, 2017 through Sept. 7, 2017.
• Designation Number 2 – St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands have been designated as crop disaster areas due to losses caused by Hurricane Maria that occurred during Sept. 19, 2017.

Crop Disasters Declared in Texas, Utah, Oklahoma, Nevada and Hawaii

Extreme weather and climatic events destroy crops in 39 counties across five U.S. states

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated the counties of  Hawaii, Kalawao and Maui in the state of Hawaii as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought.

Two separate designations have been issued since April 13.

USDA has also designated eight counties in two other states—Nevada and Utah—as crop disaster areas due to drought.  Those counties are:

• Nevada. Elko, Eureka, Lincoln, Nye, and White Pine.

• Utah. Juab, Millard and Tooel.

Excessive rain and moisture destroy or damage crops in Texas, Oklahoma

USDA has designated a total of 28 counties in Texas and Oklahoma as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by excessive rain and moisture that occurred from Oct. 23, 2015, through Jan. 10, 2016. Those counties are:

• Texas. Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Henderson, Hill, Hopkins, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Lamar, Montague, Navarro, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Tarrant, Van Zandt and Wise.

Extreme Weather Events Destroy Crops in Georgia & the Carolinas

Crop disasters declared in 37 counties across three U.S. states

Lingering excessive heat, excessive rain and moisture have destroyed or damaged crops in at least 37 counties across three states: Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 20 counties in Georgia as crop disaster area due to damages and losses caused by excessive rain and moisture that occurred from Aug. 24, 2015, and continues. Those counties are:

Appling, Brantley, Bulloch, Burke, Emanuel, Glynn, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, Long, McIntosh, Montgomery, Pierce, Screven, Tattnall, Toombs, Treutlen, Treutlen and Wayne.

USDA has also designated 17 counties across the Carolinas as crop disaster area due to damages and losses caused by drought and excessive heat that occurred from April 25, 2015, and continues. Those counties are:

North Carolina. Cabarrus, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Stanly, Surry, Union, Wilkes and Yadkin.

South Carolina. Lancaster and York.

All counties listed above were designated natural disaster areas on Jan. 20, 2016.

Crop Disasters 2015

USDA declared crop disasters in at least 4,017 counties and county equivalents across 46 States [as well as Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands] in 2015. Those states are Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

Multiple Crop Disasters Declared in Montana

Drought, frost, hail and wind destroy or damage crops in the State of Montana

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 8 counties in Montana in two separate disaster designations as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by multiple disasters that occurred during the 2015 crop year.

• Disaster Designation 1: USDA has designated Blaine, Chouteau, Hill and Liberty counties in Montana as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by drought that occurred from April 1, 2015, and continues.

• Disaster Designation 1: USDA has designated Flathead, Lake, Missoula and Sanders counties in Montana as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by frost, hail and wind that occurred from May 10, 2015, through July 5, 2015.

All counties listed above were designated crop disaster areas on Dec. 17, 2015.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 39 counties in three states—Alabama, Florida and Georgia—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by excessive rainfall, winds, and flooding that occurred during the period of Sept. 1 through Nov. 20, 2015. Those counties are:

Alabama. Baldwin, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Chambers, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Elmore, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Tallapoosa and Wilcox.

Florida. Escambia, Holmes, Jackson, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton.

Georgia. Chattahoochee, Clay, Early, Harris, Muscogee, Seminole, Stewart and Troup.

Crop disasters declared in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of at least 35 counties across three states—Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by drought. Those counties are:

Drought Crop Disaster Areas – Disaster Designation #1 (total of 20 counties)

• Arkansas. Ashley, Bradley, Calhoun, Clark, Cleveland, Columbia, Dallas, Drew, Hempstead, Lafayette, Little River, Miller, Nevada, Ouachita and Union counties.
• Louisiana. Bossier, Caddo and Webster parishes.
• Texas. Bowie and Cass counties.

Drought Crop Disaster Areas – Disaster Designation #2 (total of 15 counties)

• Texas. Anderson, Atascosa, Bexar, Cherokee, Ellis, Freestone, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Henderson, Karnes, Kaufman, Navarro, Smith, Van Zandt and Wilson counties.

All counties listed above were designated as crop disaster areas on Oct. 7, 2015.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of at least 81 counties across nine states as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought. Those counties are:

• Arkansas. Hempstead, Howard, Little River, Miller and Sevier counties.
• Oklahoma. McCurtain County.
• Texas. Bowie County.

Drought Crop Disaster Areas – Disaster Designation #2 (total of 9 parishes)

• Louisiana. Bienville, De Soto, Grant, Natchitoches, Rapides, Red River, Sabine, Vernon and Winn parishes.

• Maine. Carroll, Cumberland, Rockingham, Strafford Park and York counties.

14 Counties in Maine and Montana Declared Agricultural Disaster Areas

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated seven counties in Maine as a agricultural  disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by excessive precipitation that occurred from May 8 – September 25, 2013.

• The disaster areas in Maine are Somerset, Aroostook, Franklin, Kennebec, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Waldo counties.

Montana Disaster Designations

USDA has designated seven counties in the state of Montana as crop disaster areas due to losses caused by hail, high winds and severe storms that occurred July 8 – August 3, 2013.

• Those areas are Custer, Carter, Fallon, Garfield, Powder River, Prairie and Rosebud counties.
