Red Flag Warnings remain in effect across N. California as strong north winds increase fire activity

Gusty winds increased fire activity on Saturday, forcing more than 100,000 people to abandon their homes including 3,000 from the city of Santa Rosa, as of Saturday, Cal Fire reported.

More than 10,000 fire personnel are trying to control 16 large wildfires that in total have burned at least 214,000 acres (~86,600 hectares).

These extremely destructive blazes, have destroyed an estimated 5,700 structures, killing at least 40 people, with hundreds of others reported as missing including 235 in Sonoma County alone.

The death toll is expected to rise as cadaver dogs  begin searching the rubble from thousands of incinerated homes.

Red Flag Warnings 

Red Flag Warnings remain in effect across Northern California due to strong north winds, which have already increased fire activity. A Red Flag Warning is also in effect in Southern California through the weekend, Cal Fire reported.

Deadliest Wildfires in California History

The wildfires are now the deadliest in California history, surpassing the previous record of 29 deaths from the 1933 Griffith Park fire in Los Angeles.

Wildfire Season Currently Third Worst in the US History

This year’s wildfire season is currently (Saturday, October 14) the third worst in the US history, with more than  8.7 million acres charred, behind 2015 (9.3 million acres) and 2012 (8.9 million acres). The ten-year annual average (2006 – 2016) is 6 million acres, according to NIFC.

M3.9 quake strikes 3km NW of Redwood Valley, California

The quake occurred at a v. shallow depth of 1.4km, USGS report (FEWW Heba-728F). The epicenter was at 39.285°N, 123.234°W, striking at 23:10:32 UTC on Friday.

Wildfires Now the Deadliest in California History

35 People now confirmed dead, as cadaver dogs search smouldering ruins for more human remains.

Wildfires have destroyed an estimated 5,700 homes and businesses and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from their homes in N. California’s wine country.

The deadly blazes have claimed at least 35 lives as of Friday (PDT), and the death toll is expected to climb much higher. Hundreds of people are still missing including  200 people in Sonoma County.

The wildfires are now the deadliest in California history, surpassing the previous record of 29 deaths from the 1933 Griffith Park fire in Los Angeles.

Some 17 large wildfires have consumed nearly 222,000 acres (~ 90,000 hectares) across eight counties.

Was deadly blaze at Grenfell Tower, London sparked by terrorists?

Seventy-nine people are either dead or missing presumed dead after the catastrophic fire at Grenfell Tower, London police said.

Some 18 people remain hospitalized, with nine reportedly in critical condition.

The deadly blaze at the 24-storey residential block in North Kensington, west London was sparked at about 01:00 BST (UTC + 1:00 hr) on 13 June, rapidly engulfing the entire tower with catastrophic consequences.

Authorities have not yet revealed the cause of fire, but have not ruled out terrorism.

Apocalyptic Fires Incinerate Victims Fleeing in their Cars

Many killed or injured in forest fires near Coimbra, Portugal

Dozens of people were killed and dozens more injured while trying to flee forest fire in Portugal.

Most of the victims were incinerated in their cars while trying to flee an apocalyptic blaze in Pedrógão Grande area, about 50 km  southeast of Coimbra, Portuguese authorities said.

“This is the greatest disaster we have experienced in recent years in terms of forest fires,” said the prime minister.

The casualty toll currently stands at 65 dead and about 70 injured.

About 80 forest fires have broken out across Portugal since Friday.

Dozens Killed or Injured in London Towering Inferno

PM from Hell: Theresa May’s government could have stopped this tragedy, too, but it couldn’t give a damn!

At least 12 people were killed and dozens more injured, with 18 victims being in a critical condition, after a massive blaze raged through the night at a residential tower block in west London.

An unknown number of residents are missing, presumed dead.

Built in 1974, the 24-storey Grenfell Tower, in north Kensington, west London, England, was home to 120 families. It’s part of the Lancaster West Estate, a sprawling inner-city social housing complex of about 1,000 homes.

The tower had recently undergone a major refurbishment costing the taxpayers the equivalent of $10 million.

Hindu gods abandon followers: 110 killed, 350 injured in Hindu temple fire

At least 110 people were killed and more than 350 others injured in a massive fire that broke out during a fireworks display at Puttingal Hindu temple in Kollam, in the southern Indian state of Kerala early Sunday morning, officials have said.

“It was a spark from the crackers being burst that fell into the stack of crackers kept on ground, leading to the fire.”

“Fire at temple in Kollam is heart-rending and shocking beyond words. My thoughts are with families of the deceased and prayers with the injured,” Indian Prime Minister Modi said, announcing a compensation of 200,000 rupees ($3,000) for the families of each of the victims.

Deadly Fires Destroy Hundreds of Homes in South Africa

Fires kill a dozen people, destroying hundreds of homes and displacing 1,300 people

Another deadly fire, fourth in a year, has left 1,300 residents homeless in the Mandela Park area situated in the Imizamo Yethu settlement, said a report.

“Hout Bay residents pleaded for help on Sunday after the fourth fire in a year broke out at the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement.”

“There have been four fires…  The people that lost everything a month ago, they have now lost everything again…” said Hout Bay Civic Association secretary.
