Hundreds killed or missing, and about 500,000 are displaced in the flooding and mudslides triggered by incessant rains, authorities said.
Meanwhile, a surge of dengue fever cases have been reported by NGOs with 53,000 dengue fever cases recorded across the country since January.
“The humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka right now is alarming. The impact of these early monsoon season downpours has been far more devastating than what we’d normally expect this time of year,” said Save the Children Country Director in Sri Lanka.
“We’re particularly worried we could start seeing a further increase in the number of dengue cases because of the stagnant water that the floods will leave in their wake, which is the last thing needed by families and communities that have already lost so much.”
At least 7.68 million people across 10 Chinese provinces have been affected by extreme rain events and sever flooding, said the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Weather related disasters have left dozens of people dead or missing, destroying thousands of homes and hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops.
East China
“In east China’s Jiangxi Province, six people died, according to the provincial civil affairs department. Among them, two drowned in swollen rivers, while four were killed by lightening.
“Three people remain missing, 105,700 hectares of crops were ruined, 969 houses destroyed and direct economic losses have been estimated in the region of 2.16 billion yuan (about 328.5 million U.S. dollars).
“About 199,000 people have been displaced, including about 13,000 from Guxiandu, Poyang County where a river breached its banks on Monday evening. More than 400 armed police plan to mend a 100-meter gap in the river defenses on Wednesday. “We’re waiting because the water level remains high,” said a police spokesman.
Southeast China
“Thousands of homes were flooded in Poyang county, Jiangxi province, late on Monday after Bintian Reservoir overflowed as torrential rain continued to wreak havoc in South China.”
“In Hunan province, a flooded river in Longshan county forced about 18,500 residents to leave an ancient township.
“Torrential rains and floods have affected 213,800 residents and forced the relocation of 32,800 people in the province, according to provincial authorities.”
“In neighboring Guizhou province, rescuers saved more than 150 residents who were stranded after their villages were flooded in Yanhe county. More than 1,500 people were relocated,” local media reported.

In central China’s Hunan Province, torrential rains have triggered extensive flooding forcing at least 20,000 people, including 5,000 tourists, to evacuate, Official Xinhua reported
Tens of thousands evacuated as deadly floods sweep through France and Germany
French President has declared a State of Emergency in the areas devastated by floods, while German authorities declared the “disaster alarm,” said reports.
Extreme rain events have triggered widespread flooding from Bavaria, Southern Germany, to Paris, France, killing at least a dozen people and destroying or damaging thousands of properties, roads and other public infrastructure.
The most affected city has been Nemours, south of Paris, where around 3,000 people were forced to flee their homes after the floods.
Soldiers have been deployed to help emergency personnel rescue stranded residents and motorists.
Meteo France, the country’s main weather agency, has put Paris region and six other departments on orange alert, the second-highest warning level on risk of floods, while the Seine-et-Marne department has been put on red alert.
The River Seine was forecast to peak six meters (19ft) above its normal level – the highest level since the 1910 Great Flood of Paris.
Violent storms dump 460mm of rain on Houston, Texas triggering massive floods

A least 12 feared dead amid heavy rain, severe flooding in Malawi
Hundreds of houses in various parts of Chibanja, Chibavi, and Chiputula townships have collapsed, according to local reports.
About 145mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours, causing death and destruction in multiple areas.

Extreme rain events, deadly floods and landslides across Sri Lanka have affected 5.5% of the population, or 1,121,579 persons (311,623 families), leaving at least 39 people dead, 20 injured and 2 missing since December 20, reported the country’s Disaster Management Center.
The disasters have destroyed 6,500 homes and damaged 18,013 others, displacing at least 50,832 people across 22 of the country’s 29 districts, said the report.
The town of Batticaloa is the worst hit with more than 30,000 people displaced, officials have said.
The towns of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in the north central province, Sri Lanka’s largest rice-producing region, have experienced severe flooding as days of heavy rain forced the authorities to open the sluice gates on dozens of dams.
The floods have also washed away many roads and railways throughout the country.

Severe floods and landslides triggered by extreme rain events have killed dozens of people in India’s remote northeast, said reports.
At least 21 people have lost their lives and another 24 are missing and presumed dead in flood affected areas of Garo Hills region in Meghalaya, said state government officials, reported Times of India.
In Meghalaya, dozens of villages were inundated by flash floods, as forecasters warned of more rains through Thursday.
Floods have killed at least 14 others in Assam, where multiple districts inducing Gauhati, the state capital, were inundated.
At least 300,000 people have been affected by the latest round of disasters, including about 30,000 displaced.
Floods killed hundreds of people and left tens of thousands homeless in Indian-controlled Kashmir and Pakistan earlier this month.

Deadly Floods Wreak Havoc in East Europe
Extreme Rain Events flooded rivers, breaking their banks in Romania’s districts of Arges, Gorj, Teleorman and Valcea, some 200 kilometers west of the capital Bucharest, forcing scores of people to evacuate.
At least a dozen people were left dead, or reported missing, according to local reports.
“A passenger train derailed in the same area after a small bridge caved in due to flooding, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, the national railway said,” AP reported.
“Seventy Bulgarian villages and parts of the city of Gabrovo were left without electricity and water supply was disrupted as the flooding destroyed some of the water and sewerage infrastructure. The rains also induced landslides and destroyed bridges, and many roads in the region were blocked by mud and debris.”
More areas in southern Romania could be affected in the next few days with torrential rains, local forecasters said.
In June, flash floods deluged neighboring Bulgaria, devastating the Black Sea resort city of Varna, killing more than a dozen people, and forcing scores of others to evacuate.
In May, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia were hit by the most extreme rain events ever recorded in the region, which killed dozens of people and caused billions of dollars in damage.

‘The tragedy is enormous’
Extreme Rain Events have triggered deadly flooding in Bulgaria, killing at least 10 people, destroying homes, washing away roads and forcing evacuations, officials said.

Deadly Floods Kill Dozens, Destroy or Damage Thousands of Homes in Southern Brazil
Extreme Rain Events have triggered sever flooding in Brazil’s southern state of Parana since Monday, killing dozens of people and destroying or damaging about 6,500 homes. The floods have affected tens of thousands of people across 80 towns, officials said.
The floods have destroyed much of the public infra structure in the region, washing out roads and bridges and prompting authorities to declare states of emergency is multiple towns.
One of the worst affected towns is the state capital of Curitiba, one of a dozen cities hosting the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil.

Another round of deadly floods destroy thousands of homes in Afghanistan
Flash flooding in northern Afghanistan has killed at least 80 people and forced thousands to flee their homes, authorities said.
At least 2,000 homes have been destroyed and roads and bridges washed away in what has been described as a “major disaster.”
Flooding and landslides have plagued northern Afghanistan since late April, affecting tens of thousands of villagers.
In May, two Mega Landslides killed thousands of people and buried a large section of the main north-south road in the Tashkurghan gorge , effectively cutting off the north of the country.
At least 2,500 people were killed after the two massive landslides in NE Afghanistan.
The landslide site was designated as a ‘mass grave’ by the provincial governor of Badakhshan province.
More than 1,000 houses have been destroyed or affected by the massive landslide
The landslide buried entire villages and left thousands of people homeless according to the UN mission in Afghanistan.
The disaster is the latest in a series of calamities caused by extreme rain events and flooding in which hundreds of people in north and east Afghanistan have perished.
“There were more than 1,000 families living in that village. A total of 2,100 people – men, women and children – are trapped,” a spokesman for the provincial governor told Reuters.
“As the part of the mountain which collapsed is so big, we don’t believe anyone would survive. The government and locals from surrounding villagers are helping with the rescue, and so far they have recovered more then a hundred bodies.”
In late April, a major landslide buried entire villages leaving hundreds dead, and many more injured in northeastern Afghanistan.

Extreme rain events in China have triggered deadly flooding and landslides in many areas inundating hundreds of thousands of homes in dozens of towns and hundreds of villages.
Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes as floodwaters destroy crops, homes, roads and other public infrastructure.
The worst affected areas include Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the south, Jiangxi Province in the east, and Fujian Province in the southeast.

Exxon’s Pegasus pipeline leaks 10,000 barrels of Canadian oil in Arkansas
More than 10,000 barrels of Canadian Wabasca heavy crude oil, described as “oil sands,” has leaked from Exxon’s Pegasus pipeline in Mayflower city, Arkansas.
The incident is categorized as a “major spill” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and 22 homes near the rupture point have been evacuated.
Exxon has shut down the pipeline, which can carry more than 90,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Pakota, Illinois, to Nederland, Texas, said a report.
“The Arkansas spill was the second incident this week where Canadian crude has spilled in the United States. On Wednesday, a train carrying Canadian crude derailed in Minnesota, spilling 15,000 gallons of oil.”
U.K. reports coldest Easter Sunday on record
Easter Sunday was the coldest Easter day on record, with the lowest temperature dipping to -12.5ºC (9.5ºF) in Braemar, in the Scottish Highlands, said a report.
Average U.K. temperatures for this time of year are between 10ºC and 13ºC, said the UK Met Office, adding that the entire month of March has been provisionally declared the coldest since 1962.
