Major Storm Continues to Pound U.S. Northeast

States of emergency have now been declared for 12 states in the south, southeast and northeast since the weekend, as a deadly storm continues to track up U.S. Northeast.

New York: Gov. Cuomo declared a state of emergency Thursday, his  fifth so far this year, as the deadly snowstorm impacted much of New York and the East Coast.

Cuomo’s  declaration is for Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence counties and covers the mid-to-lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island, as well as the North Country, central New York and the Capital Region.

“The roads are dangerous,” declared Cuomo!

Connecticut: Gov. Malloy declared a State of Emergency in Vermont as the storm dumped up to 12 inches of snow on parts of the states, straining Vermont’s reserves of road salt.

Additional snow was forecast to fall early morning Friday, keeping schools closed.

120 Million of People Affected

The massive storm system has affected an estimated 120 millions people in 22 states from Texas to Maine, leaving at least 14 people dead and many injured, as of posting.

Winter Storm Warnings, Watches and Advisories were in effect from Georgia to Maine, Tuesday through Friday. Forecasters have warned the powerful system could dump up to 18 inches (46 cm) of snow over the Atlantic Coast through Saturday.

Winter Storm Moving through the Northeast

The same storm that brought heavy snow and significant ice accumulations to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic has moved up the East Coast, bringing significant winter weather to the Northeast. Heavy snow and gusty winds are expected in parts of the Appalachians and New England into Friday. Conditions will begin to improve as the storm pulls away into the Canadian Maritimes by Friday afternoon.

States of Emergency Declared for 12  States

Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, New York and Connecticut have now declared States of Emergency due to the massive storm.

“This is not the storm we had two weeks ago, where we were playing in the snow and building snowmen. This is an ice storm,” said Gov Haley, as she declared a State of Emergency for South Carolina.

Flight Cancellations and Delays

More than 12,000 flights into, within, or from the United States have been canceled and thousands more delayed Tuesday through early Friday. The trend is expected to continue through weekend.

Federal Emergency Disaster Declared for the State of Georgia

The White House has declared a federal emergency in the State of Georgia resulting from a severe winter storm beginning on February 10, 2014, and continuing.

The emergency disaster declaration will provide federal disaster relief to “lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe” in the counties of Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Cobb, Dade, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Elbert, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Franklin, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Haralson, Hart, Jackson, Lincoln, Lumpkin, Madison, Murray, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walker, Walton, White, Whitfield, and Wilkes.

White House Issues Federal Emergency Disaster Declaration for South Carolina

The White House has declared a  Federal Emergency Disaster in the State of South Carolina resulting from a severe ice and snowstorm beginning on February 10, 2014, and continuing.

Energy Emergency

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) extended on Wednesday the regional States of Emergency Declarations, Waivers, Exemptions & Permits for transporting propane throughout the United States.

A total of at least 36 states and District of Columbia are currently impacted by shortages of propane and other heating fuels.

States covered by the emergency declarations include:

• Western Service Center: North Dakota and South Dakota
• Southern Service Center: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee
• Eastern Service Center: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia
• Midwestern Service Center: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin

Nor’easter Spawned by Deadly Thanksgiving Storm

Nor’easter brings heavier rain, heavier snow, sleet and high winds

Winds of up to 63MPH forecast in parts the affected area, as thousands of flights are cancelled and thousands more delayed.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain hit large areas in the northeast, dumping several inches of snow across Pennsylvania.

Hazardous travel conditions prevail throughout vast regions in the northeast.  NWS has issued the following forecast:

Heavy snow is forecast from the Tennessee Valley to western New England, with freezing rain possible across the Appalachians and western Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast through Wednesday. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with severe thunderstorms possible for parts of the coastal Southeast this evening.

Moderate to heavy rain continues to move over the southeast and
The middle Atlantic while light snow continues from Ohio eastward
Through central New England.

Winter Storm Warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect
for a large area from the Tennessee and Ohio valleys eastward
across the Appalachians to the interior mid-Atlantic region, the
lower Great Lakes as well as interior New England.

Flood watches are in effect for portions of the northwest
Carolinas and portions of the northeast.

Deadly Thanksgiving Storm Moves East

Deadly ice storm claims at least 13 lives across the U.S.

A major storm system moving across the U.S. has caused at least 13 deaths including four in Oklahoma, four in Texas, three in California and one each in Arizona and New Mexico, as well as numerous road accident injuries.

The massive storm dumped at least 35cm of snow on Sunday in many mountain regions of Colorado and Utah, as well as significant amounts on  parts of Arizona and Texas.

The system has forced more than a thousand flight cancellations across  southern U.S.

U.S. Weather Forecast

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple severe weather Warnings, Watches and Advisories including Ice Storm Warning, Winter Storm Warning, Storm Warning and Flood Warning for a large portion of the country.  The following are highlights of their latest forecast Valid 00UTC Tue Nov 26 2013 – 00Z Thu Nov 28 2013

• Sleet/freezing rain possible from the Southern Appalachians to parts of Northern New England
• Snow is possible from Eastern Ohio Valley/Central Appalachians to the Lower Great Lakes
• Heavy rain possible from the Central Gulf Coast to New England
• Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below average from the Central Appalachians to the Central/Western Gulf to the Upper Midwest
• A complicated storm will develop over the Central Gulf Coast and move to the Mid-Atlantic by Wednesday.
• Another storm over the Central Gulf Coast will move northeastward to Mid-Atlantic and combined with the energy from the Great Lakes. The developing storm will produce moderate to heavy rain over the Central Gulf Coast and expand into the Southern/Central Appalachians by Tuesday morning. The moderate to heavy rain will move eastward to the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday, expanding into Northern New England by Wednesday morning. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along the Central Gulf Coast and move eastward to the Southeast by Tuesday night, moving offshore by Wednesday morning.

Wisconsin Wind Chill Temps to Drop to -33ºC

Wisconsin declares a state of emergency in 72 counties

Wind chill temperatures expected to drop to as low as minus 27 degrees F (- 33ºC).

Gov Jim Doyle of Wisconsin declared a state of emergency in 72 counties as a powerful snowstorm barreled through the upper Midwest depositing about 20 inches of snow, causing extensive power outages, closing many roads in several states and grounding thousands of flights across the region.

The deadly snowstorm which has claimed at least 4 lives so far,  hit Wisconsin and Minnesota first and moved eastward toward Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio. In Minnesota the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis collapsed under about 2 feet of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a  blizzard warning for Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Chicago, northern, and north-western Illinois, as well as Michigan, North and South Dakota.

“In Wisconsin, wind gusts were as high as 70 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said, and an advisory was issued with wind chill temperatures expected to drop to minus 20 degrees F to minus 27 degrees F (minus 29ºC to minus 33ºC).” A report said.

Pacific Northwest

Extreme rain events in parts of the Pacific Northwest have  triggered major mudslides, closing roads and blocking at least one railroad track in the state of Washington. Forecasters say storms could dump an additional 15cm (6 inches)   or more of rain in the Cascade Range and Olympic Mountains, a report said.

Middle East

Torrential rains, snow, fierce winds and a major sandstorm hit countries across the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean for a second day.  The storms sunk a  cargo ship off the Israeli port of Ashdod and disrupted shipping in the Suez canal and  most Egyptian ports on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

A factory collapsed in the port of Alexandria killing at least three people and pushing the reported death toll from climate-related incidents to at least 6 in the region so far.
