37 Counties in five states designated as agricultural disaster areas: USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 37 counties in five states as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the ongoing drought.

The designated disaster areas, both primary and contiguous, spared across the following states:

• California: Del Norte,  Mendocino,  Siskiyou, Humboldt, Shasta, Trinity, Glenn, Lassen, Plumas,  Tehama, Lake, Modoc and Sonoma counties.
• Idaho: Cassia, Gooding, Twin Falls, Blaine,  Jerome, Oneida, Camas, Lincoln, Owyhee, Elmore,  Minidoka and Power counties.
• Oregon:  Jackson,  Josephine, Klamath,  Lake, Curry, Deschutes, Douglas, Harney,  Lane and Curry counties.
• Nevada: Washoe and Elko counties.
• Utah: Box Elder County.

All counties listed above were designated natural disaster areas August 14, 2013, said USDA.

As of August 14, 2013 at least 1,317 U.S. counties were designated as primary or contiguous agricultural disaster areas due to the ongoing drought.

98 Counties in nine states designated as agricultural disaster areas: USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 98 (ninety-eight) counties in nine states as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the ongoing drought and freeze earlier in the year.

The designated disaster areas, both primary and contiguous, spared across nine states:

• Idaho (23 counties designated as disaster areas)
• Montana (4)
• Nevada (2)
• Oregon (1)
• Wyoming (1)
• Mississippi (41)
• Alabama (4)
• Louisiana (3)
• California (19)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 19 counties in California as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the ongoing drought.

The counties designated as primary or contiguous disaster areas are

Calaveras, Orange, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Cruz, Alpine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Stanislaus, Amador, Merced, San Benito, San Mateo and Tuolumne.

Drought disaster has also been declared in 5 other states:

• Idaho: Ada, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Canyon, Fremont, Lemhi, Payette, Adams, Butte, Custer, Jefferson, Twin, Falls, Blaine, Camas, Gooding, Madison, Valley, Boise, Clark, Idaho, Teton and Washington counties.
• Montana:  Beaverhead, Gallatin, Madison and Ravalli counties.
• Nevada: Elko and Humboldt counties.
• Oregon: Malheur County.
• Wyoming: Teton County.

All counties listed above were designated natural disaster areas July 31, 2013.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 41 counties in Mississippi as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a freeze that occurred March 25-29, 2013.

The counties are Clarke, Harrison, Marion, Copiah, Jackson, Pearl, River, Covington, Jones, Perry, Forrest, Lamar, Pike,m George, Lauderdale, Stone, Greene, Leflore, Walthall, Hancock, Lincoln, Wayne, Amite, Hinds, Jefferson Davis, Rankin, Carroll, Holmes, Kemper, Simpson, Claiborne, Humphreys, Lawrence, Smith, Franklin, Jasper, Neshoba, Sunflower, Grenada, Jefferson, Newton and Tallahatchie.

Agricultural disaster due to the freeze has also been declared in 2 other states:

• Alabama: Choctaw, Mobile, Sumter and Washington counties.
• Louisiana: St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington counties.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 58 counties in 8 states as primary and contiguous disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought.

• The latest disaster list includes counties in the states of Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

Major winter storm is forecast for parts of the Northeast and New England Friday into Saturday. “This Nor’easter-type storm system will bring strong winds and heavy snow to the region. More than 87 percent of US High Plains remains in severe drought or worse

Drought Expands in the U.S. Plains

Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma plagued by severe drought or worse

Severe drought has spread to 87.25 percent of the High Plains, up from 86.20 percent previous week, with 61.27 percent of the region rated in extreme drought, up from 60.25 percent.

• The entire land area in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma is currently affected by severe drought or worse.

About 58.87 percent of the contiguous United States was in at least “moderate” drought as of January 15, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Oklahoma declares a state of emergency amid persistent drought

About 16,000 residents in rural Payne, Pawnee, and Lincoln counties are running out of water, prompting emergency managers to declare states of emergency.

• The water level at Lone Chimney Lake, the area’s only source, has dropped under four feet—11.5 feet below normal, reports said.

• “This month the small Oklahoma farming town of Wapanucka lost water completely when the spring-fed wells the community relies on ran dry. Officials closed schools and residents had to do without tap water until the town could run a line to a neighboring water district.”

“Last summer’s extreme weather locked two-thirds of the U.S. continental land mass in severe drought, cutting production of the biggest crop, corn, by 27 percent from early-season estimates,” said a report.

• The latest designations are for counties in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

Deadly floods paralyze Indonesian capital, Jakarta

A state of emergency was declared by the new governor of Jakarta as severe flooding triggered by days of heavy rain inundated large parts of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, blocking roads and forcing up to 100,000 people from their homes.

• Many businesses and government offices, especially in the capital’s central business district, were forced to close because staff could not get to work. Dozens of schools have told their students to stay at home.

• At least half dozen people have been killed in the extreme rain and flood-related incidents so far.

• “Rain will continue to fall in the greater Jakarta area … the potential for flooding remains,” a spokesman for the Meteorology Climatology Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Reuters.
